That's a pretty sweet map, but does anyone know what the terrain variety is really like? I'm getting the suspicion that there won't be a lot of interesting diversity beyond the coasts and mountains...

Here's some images of me messing around with a SU-something something in the armoury, really enjoying the specific challenges for whatever you are controlling...even animals like goats

You were flying a Frogfoot in jeans!?

From the german version I have the challenges weren't well translated using the english pbo file, so I haven't looked into that much either. From what I understand though each piece of equipment, weapon, and unit in the game has a challenge associated with it in the armory.

I like the fly in style

Yeah it's insane, it must have taken them forever to assign tasks for each item, vehicle etc

From the BI forums: ArmA 2 demo tomorrow!

Oh, I will try this!

Trying to grab this by logging into home PC. File Planet has a 40 minute queue & the torrent page won't even load. I jumped onto the queue and will try to remember to check the home PC in an hour.

By the way, the demo weighs in at 3 GB, but apparently has content to match:

Demo Content wrote:

Boot Camp:
----------
Boot camp provides you with several scenarios which can help you to better enjoy the ArmA 2 demo.

To play the scenarios, start the game and select SingleplayerBootcamp from the main menu. The following tutorials are available:

* Basic Training - You can learn the basics of the game controls, movement and principles of first aid and infantry combat in this tutorial. If you're new to the world of military simulations, it is strongly recommended to learn these basics.
* Parachute Jump - In this tutorial, you have a chance to try precision-jumping with a steerable parachute.
* Helicopter - Learn the basics of helicopter flight, transportation of troops and attack chopper tactics.
* Team - Learn the basics of your team's command and control. This tutorial will teach you how to command your subordinates and manage your team.
* High Command - You are often given command of whole groups in the bigger battles (e.g. Death Valley scenario). This tutorial describes the basics of the high-commander's job.
* Construction - In a large-scale scenarios (Death Valley in the demo), you can construct defenses, HQ buildings or structures which enable you to enroll certain unit types.

This tutorial will teach you the basics of the construction interfaces.

Singleplayer:
-------------
Three scenarios and an editable mission template are featured in the demo. Scenarios are accessible from the main menu's Singleplayer Scenarios section.

Trial by Fire - A marine assault team is inserted on the Utes island to capture an OPFOR base. To successfully complete this mission, advance together with the rest of your team, follow your orders and avoid being too brave.

Death Valley - Small mission to introduce and also teach you how to use the RTS/FPS blend mode for ArmA 2 - The Warfare mode.
In this large-scale battle, your objectives are to capture all strategic locations or destroy all structures on the enemy base in your area of operation.
It is recommended to play Team, High Command and Construction tutorials before you start playing this mission.

Benchmark - This scenario is an unplayable cinematic benchmark test that will help you determine the best setting for playing ArmA 2 on your computer or to compare your hardware. Average FPS is displayed at the end of this scenario.

Mission Template: Basic - To start this mission template, activate "My missions...", select "", "01:Basic", choose the side you want to play for, and edit the mission conditions.

Multiplayer:
------------
It's possible to play a multiplayer battle or customize some of the available mission templates.

To start the template-based multiplayer, select "" and select from the list of available templates. Note that templates are customizable, and you may prepare many variations of existing setups.

Death Valley - Multiplayer version of the scenario. Up to 16 players may take part in this battle.

In "Create game",
Multiplayer Mission Template: Deathmatch - Free-for-all fight for up to 16 players.
Multiplayer Mission Template: Team Deathmatch - Two teams fight in a small area. Up to 16 players may play in this scenario.
Multiplayer Mission Template: Seize The Area - Cooperative scenario for up to 6 players, whose task is to eliminate all hostile units in a designated area.

Anyone got a mirror for the torrent? I can't seem to connect to that site.

Demo is now on steam!

Hooray! Eat a dick, Fileplanet!

well the HALO training is pretty bad, over all they need to explain commands a lot better.

Step 1: Jump!
Step 2: Scream!
Step 3: arrive at your destination.

seems pretty straight forward to me....

Since LegitTorrents has been pretty flaky, they've also put the torrent up on GameUpdates.org: http://gameupdates.org/details.php?id=3594

Pre-ordered today. Looking forward to the weekend. I'm bummed about no FreeTrack support yet, though.

Agreed

Demo sold me, I am picking this up off Steam. The AI voiceovers are ridiculous, but the gameplay is smooth and I am getting pretty solid framerates. I ran the benchmark scenario at high on 1920x1200 and got about 35 FPS avg. I'll tweak the settings to knock that up a bit.

Performance seems to be a dream come true compared to what I was dreading. Nevertheless, the last infantry sim I played was Operation Flashpoint. I loved it then, and this Arma demo has me realizing I don't have the time or patience anymore for these games. But I'm sure other folks will enjoy it!

Is anyone else seeing some serious mouse lag with the demo? It was really bad when I first started, so I turned down my video settings pretty far and it's still there, but a bit less obvious. Still, I'm finding it very jarring. Far worse than anything I've seen in a while.

Edit: Turned off FSAA and it's not nearly as bad. Anyone know if it's possible to display FPS?

Just run the free version of fraps to get your fps.

I never played Joint ops so not sure if this game is the same. Looks like Operation Flashpoint. My impression is all over is all over the place, maybe because I'm used to COD and BF games. I played the demo for a bit but would like to hear more from others.

I have mixed feelings about the demo. It's a much more polished version of ARMA, but I don't know if I even want more ARMA. I'll wait on more opinions from people playing the full version tomorrow.

Tkyl, Tempest, Certis, Boogle, Pharacon, and I had a fairly successful go at the demo's co-op mode. Successful in that it all worked and we had fun, we didn't come close to winning the scenario at any time. I think it convinced most of us to go ahead and get the game tomorrow.

Well, six of us just played some coop missions and got killed over and over again once the inevitable hornets nest of enemies was kicked. Seems like a good infantry sim, though. I'm definitely picking it up on Steam tomorrow!

Sounds neat. Whats the DRM/Bug status?

I am working on getting a server up. Hopefully tomorrow.

I tried out the demo to see how the US code runs on my machine (the German version had AI and performance issues) and it seems to work tickety boo. Pre-grabbed it off Steam. I'm very excited to play co-op this weekend.

Gave the helo training in the demo a try. Swamp Air will kill us all for certain.
