Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

I know this is not a gem, but anyone using Winodws 7 Rc having issues using watch now?

Doesn't work for me. Says I need to update WMP but when I use their link to update MS tells me I already have a more current version! Their player is a piece of crap. Luckily it works fine on the 360.

Great.. Liam Neeson as Zeus.

Speaking of which, Rob Roy is available!

Well, I am a sucker for Rob Roy. One of the best villains ever.

Did Rob Roy start the "smell my finger" meme, or just add to it?

For that and other reasons, I hated that movie.

Don't know if these have been mentioned, but I just noticed a couple TV series I didn't know were available to Watch Instantly!

Dexter (S1 + S2)
The Tudors (S1 + S2)
Californication (S1)
This American Life (S1 + S2)

... there goes my summer.

Thanks for the This American Life heads up, I haven't seen season 2 yet.

I started watching The Tudors last weekend. Good show indeed.

Right At Your Door

It's an interesting "what if?" film involving a dirty bomb in L.A. It's a bit of a downer and some of its realism is suspect, but it was 96 minutes well spent, especially given Netflix's small online inventory.

That. Is. A. Great. Movie. It's so screwed up.

Just watched the Tudors too... great Medieval Porn.

I really loved one called "I Like Killing Flies". Dumb title, great documentary.

It documents a few months in the life of a legendary New York Restaurant called Shopsin's General Store, and its colorful owner, Kenny Shopsin. The restaurant is incredibly tiny - only holds a couple of dozen people, max. He and his family somehow manage to keep up a menu of hundreds of items, many of them created by Kenny himself.

If you watch Top Chef or Kitchen Nightmares, I think you'll be fascinated to see how this guy pulls off this miracle of restaurant micromanagement. If you enjoy it, his book, "Eat Me!", is an excellent companion to the documentary.

Children of Heaven by Mohammad Amir Naji (I recommended this somewhere else.) Don't be put of by the director's name, or the title, or the DVD cover, or the first few minutes, or the subtitles, or the fact that it's about two muslim kids. Great film.

I just watched 'Taken.' Highly recommended. Violent with a Splinter cell conviction vibe. I'd have said one influenced the other if they hadn't both come out at roughly the same time.

I too recommend Children of Heaven, though Taken isn't high up on my list, but neither are available on Watch Instantly.

Ah. It's a service. The title of this thread makes much more sense now. I read it as a command. Watch instantly!

Lol. Well, we just opened your mind up to a million more hours of mind-numbing moving images at your fingertips. Thanks, internet.

Dragonlance - Animated is online for those that grew up reading the books. I particularly like how when Tika is introduced to Caramon that she resembles the St. Pauli Girl and her boobs are bouncing -- all this in a movie that is very minimalist on its animation.

I half-watched Ira & Abby yesterday while the missus was watching it - what seemed like a chick-flick based on the blurb turned out to be a funny, well written, very well acted character movie.

Shouldn't it be SERIES 2?

YES! You are correct, sir!

We watched Let the Right One In, late last night. Wow, that was really good, best vampire movie i've seen in a LONG time. Understated and creepy.

That's been sitting in my queue for a while. Since I trust your music taste, looks like I'll move this up to the top and trust your taste in movies.

I hope i haven't squandered your trust:) Don't want to build it up too much, it's a very quiet movie. But I really liked it.

Monty Python's Flying Circus!

Has anyone watched This American Life season 2 via their Xbox?

When we play the episodes on the computer they are fine, but when we try to watch via the Xbox the audio track is messed up. The background music is there, but the voices of the narrator and people being interviewed are not. Is it like this for everyone or just us?

So this completely went under my radar, but there's a show called "Party Down" on Netflix that's pretty damn entertaining. It's by Rob Thomas (of Veronica Mars fame), and essentially it's "The Office", if instead of a paper company everyone worked for a catering company, with the occasional boob shot thrown in. It was originally picked up by Starz, and I'm hoping it gets a second season, it doesn't do anything that will blow you away, but there are genuinely funny moments in it, and there's only 10 episodes, so it's easy to pick up.

Yeah, I really liked Party Down. Plus, Lizzy Caplan (see also, True Blood).

Along the line of British sitcoms, I found whole collections of:

Yes, Minister
Yes, Prime Minister
Fawlty Towers

We've had that problem too - only with This American Life, and only occasionally. We've had it happen with 2 different episodes, and when we tried again a few days later, it worked fine.

*****

In other news, we're heartily enjoying Dexter. Interesting twist, making a sociopathic serial-killer the 'hero'.

I also heartily recommend Green Wing - it's not on Netflix, but it is on Hulu, and it's one of my favourite British sitcoms of the last decade. It's madder than a bag of fish, and just as tasty.

I just wanted to note, give this one a chance. It takes a show or two to really get going but oh man, if you enjoy political satire and/or subtle British humor, this one really cracked me up.

I'm finding myself less and less tolerant of laughter tracks in comedy shows, especially older ones. I get distracted by the laughter track to such an extent that it destroys my own enjoyment of the show.

Whups. There, fixed.
