BlazBlue Series Catch-All

Pages

True to its status, BlazBlue offers the same sort of gameplay experience as the Guilty Gear series - outrageous character designs, loud rock music, lots of fireworks, and a dauntingly complicated web of fighting system. For casual play, it's a suitable button-masher, great for sh*ts and giggles. For experts, it's a beast of a fighting game.

The game will be out on 06/30 for both PS3 and XBox 360. In case you're thinking about getting this, know that a limited edition is up for preorder across multiple online retailers for the same price as just the game itself. It is, however, sold on a first come, first serve basis.

It looks like the game will stay pretty close to the hardcore crowd, but I so wish to see some other goodjers get in on this. And then buy the game for PS3.

I've never actually played Guilty Gear but I've been thinking about picking this up to give it a try. With KOFXII coming soon though I think I might pass.

I saw a demo build of this last year, around this time actually, at Anime Expo in Los Angeles.

I'm not a GG fan, but a few of the character designs seemed pretty damned reminiscent. Guess it's house style or something. I must say, though, that this is definitely the first "Next Gen"/"HD" fighter I've really seen. The level of detail in the backgrounds was astounding. It completely puts the SFII:HDR cartoony background characters to shame.

GGXX for the PS2 was really the only fighter after MvC2 that caught the interest of my fighting game crew. Unfortunately, with that crew long dissolved by things like distance and children, I haven't really been able to get back into fighting games, despite the countless dedicate hours over the years.

I might consider picking this up (or at least renting it) for the 360 if there are enough people to play online with.

I've never even heard of this, but I loved Guilty Gear way back when I had a PS2.

I'll at the very least get it from gamefly for a while.

I might get this after a price drop if the online is present/working. I enjoyed GG on PS2, but I found the screen got so busy I couldn't keep track of what was going on. So far BB looks to be the same.

And sorry 13th, but it would be 360 for me.

Im in, but for 360 as well. played some early builds.. it's fun..but pretty much more GG but with fancy particle effects. The soundtrack kicks ass though.
I might as well pickup KOF as well. You can never have enough fighters..right?

Buncha 360 heathens.

Exactly. As mediocre as I am with fighting games in general, I pick up all the fighting games if possible, provided they're decent titles.

Same here except for the virtual fighter and soul caliber series. Im very meh about 3d fighters in general. I mean 3D motion, not artwork. I'm super jazzed about the new Capcom vs Tastsunoko coming out in the states.. I finally can bite on my "lets go half on a Wii" scam my girlfriend is trying to trick me with. I know she is doing it to lure me into endless nights of warioware and animal crossing.

I'll probably grab this game for the 360. I, too, buy almost every fighting game that comes out, despite my not being great at them. I just like playing them.

I won't be getting to this until next week (stupid mail*), but I'm picking it up for the PS3 and I suck at fighters, so I'd be happy to try out some mp (i.e. lose) in the future.

My handle is the same here as on PSN.

*I'm also going on vacation.

It is pretty unlikely that I'll be picking it up. I never played GG and I tend to stick to a couple games. I'll probably play SF4 until Tekken comes out.

I grabbed the PS3 version today. It's VERY Japanese, and the controls seem to require the right stick. Boooo..

I've been watching the videos of this game, and the style is incredible. $60 is too steep a "maybe" for me, but I'd love to try it.

Woohoo! Fellow PS3 players!

My copy will arrive sometime next week. Buttons will be mashed and fun will be had by all.

Rent or find a copy of Guilty Gear XX or Guilty Gear XX #Reload. They're by no means the same game, but from what I've read they play very similarly, so playing Guilty Gear should give you a fair idea of what to expect from BlazBlue.

Generally speaking these fighters are too technical for me. My main problem with Guilty Gear was that it was very far from being a button masher, so in order to even have a shot at beating Arcade Mode on the easier settings, you had to gain some skill, and I expect BlazBlue is the same. I'm all for technical fighters, but Arc System Works tends to make them a bit *too* technical.

Still, when it comes down in price, simply the ability to play it Online should be worth trying.

Well, got to play a little today. This game is much, much easier on newcomers. I just beat arcade mode with Jin and didn't lose once. And I suck.

Anyway, I'm off for my vacation. Looking forward to getting into this next week.

The fact that BlazBlue has proper lobbies puts it up a huge notch in my book, and makes me much more interested in it.

It still baffles me that SF4 doesn't have lobbies.

I've never had any interest in fighters, but, after watching the Gametrailers review, I keep thinking about this one. Maybe that's just my repressed inner graphics whore talking.

I picked it up yesterday. Didn't actually get a chance to play it though.

Let us know! Slightly tempted to trade in my SF4 for this.

I don't want to play this game. I find Guilty Gear to be impenetrable most of the time, and on a strictly mechanical level this badboy looks to be more of the same. However after this quicklook I now want to own this game. It looks like everything other than the actual fighting mechanics in this game are patently hilarious with an absurdity that can only come form a Japanese title. The game seems to be a parody of itself.

That quicklook makes me disappointed in Arc. Compared with Guilty Gear, this is a very lazy port. I mean, leaving the button icons as A, B, C, D instead of changing them to X, Y, B, A or Square, Triangle, Circle, X?

I like the fact that it's simplified from Guilty Gear, but maintains the complexity if you want it. I like that it's not as focused on the Street Fighter style links and precision button presses, but when I have to start translating icons in the game, that gets old very fast.

I remember that the command list in PS2's GG went with a similar "S", "HS", and so on to represent buttons. Street Fighter 4 has little icons of fists and boots. King of Fighters have almost always used the same "ABCD". All of a sudden when BlazBlue uses it it becomes a point of complaint?

Can anyone succinctly detail the main difference between this and SF4? I've never played GG, and I'm trying to figure out if there's enough difference between the two games that I can keep up playing both. I already know the KOF is too technical a game for me, with it's hops and jumps and whatever else it's got going on, but I do like fighters, and I wouldn't mind an alternative to Street Fighter. I'm basically trying to figure out whether to buy this or Fight Night, and I already know what Fight Night brings to the table.

The controls are 100 percent customizable, though. The first thing I do with a fighting game is rework the controls to work on my arcade stick. I'd imagine I'd spend even more time doing that if I was using a controller.

All of a sudden? I only said that I would have preferred if they had put in button icons appropriate to the controllers. I said nothing about my take on the SF4 system, the King of Fighters system, nor any other system, so please don't assume that I'm faulting BlazBlue unfairly just because I don't go into detail about my gripes with every other fighter.

From how many people I see playing this on my friends list, and the generally positive response in this thread, this definitely sounds like a solid game. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for any sales, or perhaps just break down in a few weeks and buy it. Does anyone have a favorite character so far, and for what reasons?

There's no need to get defensive. I'm sorry if I sounded accusing, and I understand now that "getting old real fast" was used as a hyperbole. It's a valid complaint, albeit one fighting game fans tend to get over rather quickly. Just the timing of it, in conjunction with Giant Bomb's mention of this very problem, makes me feel that the issue is given more attention than it deserves. Jeff does bring it up very nicely in the video.

Carl seems the most interesting to me. Controlling two characters at once is so out of the regular mold of the genre. I have heard that he is pretty difficult to learn, though, so maybe I'll start with someone simple, like Jin.

It's OK, I shouldn't read too much into text myself, as it's one of the worst communication mediums, at least in the way we use it in forums. My response, I realize, makes it sound like more of an issue than it is, so I apologize for that - Most games are guilty of it as you say, although come to think of it every Namco fighter does use the button icons of the system. Though now that I think of it, I don't remember what system GGXX used, so I'll have to boot up my PS2 and see.

Controlling two characters at once? I seem to recall... Kankuro from Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 did that, though I don't know how that compares with Carl in this. I never got very good with Kankuro, but if you could manage to get your opponent between Kankuro and his puppet, they were in for a world of hurt.

I always liked Jam from GG. I liked her mechanic of building up charges that you could unleash for devastating combos. She reminded me of Jill Valentine from Marvel vs. Capcom 2, only Jam's charges were much better. Is there anybody like her in BlazBlue?
