AION: Catch All

Well I hope you guys enjoy the game as much as I have so far. I'm kind of glad they are limiting the next preview to level 10 because thats about as far as i made it on the asmodian side in chinese beta, don't want to spoil too much
I will make sure and revive this thread before the next preview if no one else does so maybe we can meet up in game.

Sounds like a plan.

Got two beta keys today. May have two more on the way. May give them away. Maybe on here or maybe on my blog. Stay tuned for more info.

Nice that would be cool if you get 2 more maybe let some others check out the preview weeknds.

I'm surprised that neither Certis nor Elysium is trying this out or hasn't mentioned having a beta key.

Is there an article in the works? Or is there zero interest?

I haven't seen anything in these forums about the game thats why I went ahead and created the catch all. Not sure if there is no interest or not aware of the game. /shrug

If it doesn't have Warcraft in the title, it tends to take a back seat here.

So you want an Aion beta key?

Ha! I laugh in his face... and secretly obsess over the all-access-all-powerful key.

Today is the last day to get your name in to win a beta key from me.

The North American NDA has been lifted finally!

The AionSource Secret Project on that page looks sexy!

Yea the secret project looks good looking like Aion will have a community supporting the game in big ways!

I can't wait till they update with stigma details...

oh nice! psyched for this weekend!

Im pretty sure I'll put a preorder for this in soon, but before I put in a second one for my wife I wanted to ask a question. I've heard that after the starter areas, its going to be heavily PVP focused. Is that accurate? Is the only way to level in contested zones?

Obviously being in a good guild and always grouping up could help alleviate any constant ganking, but from past experience with PVP MMOs Im not sure she will enjoy it.

So my only question is one preorder or two, have to wait to learn more about the PVP. Any insight is appreciated.

From what I gather, its the preferred way to level since you get better gear and xp. I don't believe its 100% required. There are also dungeons in the Abyss (the pvpve area) but I don't know if there are others outside there.

That is basically the determining factor on how long my interest will last in this game. The other major factor will be the grind. I don't mind some grinding and I've heard the grind is much less than typical eastern mmo's by a lot. Also, apparently NCsoft is ramping up the quest numbers specifically for the north american launch.

If the number of quests stays consistent as compared to the 1-12 content I've experienced so far. then I will stick with the game. Also, if they have the option to pay the same hourly rate as in Asia, then I will probably choose that route and maintain my subscription.

From what I have heard, the game is very different after level 20. Since the beta so far has stopped at level 20, I don't know firsthand, but it will definitely be a determining factor in getting this game.

After this preview weekend where we are limited to the Asmodian 1-10 area, they have 2 more preview weekends listed. They are labeled open beta weekends so I get the feeling that your wife will be able to test it out for herself before taking the plunge.

Sidetrack Rant
I love how all the Aion forums rip on WoW or anyone that is concerned about the grind. They like to chest thump about how they are more skilled because of the grinds they've accomplished in FFXI and Lineage 2. They also like to point out how WoW apparently hands out levels for free and gifts anyone with a heart beat access to level cap.

But no, its still a grind whether you are able to quest or kite elites. Its just 2 sides of the same coin. To me, the real difference is how much effort and care the developer has put into the game. Playing mob grinds without questing may as well be playing in sequential monster buckets. If there is no purpose or lore, you may as well take a scoop of whatever bits suit your fancy and throw it down on some randomly colored polygons. Grinds without quests is a lazy developer cop out. If I'm paying $15 a month there had better be a rhyme and reason to what I'm doing. When the forum trolls tell you that MMO's aren't for you and to quit crying, I say tell them that the developers of their favorite grinds may as well be making Galaga, Burgertime or Robotron. That was the last era where developers could get away with creating haphazardly. Its dated, lazy and futile.

Hmm well to answer your question yes it is very pvp oriented, however, they have really focused on giving players a choice. Like Fang said above it is better to level up in the pvp centric areas since it will yeild better exp and rewards but it is possible to level w/o entering these areas. I am not a huge pvp person but like it in certain situations and in a controlled enviornment usually but this game has done something right and as things stand now im enjoying it enough to say the risk of open area ganking would be a willing one for me. One thing I haven't seen anywhere are vidoes on the net from the asain version of the game showing any gankings. I'm curious to know if they have level cap restrictions for exp gain or something similar to prevent stupid pvp as I call it.

So, I dropped down a fiver on a preorder despite know very little about this one. I figure the GWJ mind hive will have me revved up on this by then. No sense in putting up a struggle.

Too bad I can't download the launcher. HTTP error.

Edit: it works right after I post that.

ill be on tonight. name with mynril im assuming (its never taken

Hoping to be able to get in on this as well. Completely installed, just hoping to carve out some free time. Otherwise, I'll definitely be on Saturday.

what error does it tell you if you try to login right now? making sure my account is all up to speed.

This morning I got an a message about not being authorized. I figure that just means the beta weekend hadn't started.
