Monkey Island Remake & New Episodes Confirmed!

I never beat the first monkey island, so am definitely looking forward to the remake.
I'm with Sinatar on the new one, though - Sam & Max had far too many cheezeball jokes for me to be encouraged about their writing. Fortunately, they can't screw that part up in the old one :)

Have you ever read the original Sam & Max comics? The whole premise was cheeseball to begin with. The games held up to the comics, IMO, and considering they were trying to maintain a precedent set long ago by the original game as well as the comics, I'd say they did a damn fine job of writing.

So I, for one, look forward to the Monkey Island sequels. And there's something about the painting style of the redux that puts me off a bit, but the promise of Monkey Island in HD (with recorded dialog!) is still too much to bear...

I pre-ordered it during the 5 minutes that followed me seeing this post here this morning.

Now I'm trying to find a way to get all my friends to buy it so we'll definitely see Monkey Island 2

So I finally get to play this game, eh? Nice.

Ron Gilbert has a blog, and has an entry with some commentary about replaying Monkey Island, and a bit about some of the design decisions made when first creating the game.

I'm still steamed they never sent me disk #23....

My netbook won't stop screaming "DO WANT!!!1!" and "WHY IS JULY 7TH SO FAR AWAY‽"

If there's one thing I learned from the original Monkey Island, it's never pay more than $20 for a computer game.

Actually I'll probably pick this up, depending on what else is being released around that time.

I would do unmentionable things for the button in the center:

Edit: ... An so I did.

Telltale? Ugh.

That was my response as well, I'm afraid. After playing a good portion of the first season of Sam & Max, an episode of Homestar Runner and the demo of Wallace & Gromit, I'm pretty confident that Telltale suffers from a complete inability to write dialogue that is even remotely funny or clever. This does not bode well for their version of Monkey Island, but here's hoping for a pleasant surprise.

Never have beat any of the original four, but I'm a fan of Tim. So count me in.

Pre-ordered. Which game/episode should I pick as my freebie with the pre-order package?

First, play Sam and Max 104: Abe Lincoln Must Die! It's still completely free and is probably still Telltale's single best episode, in my opinion. If you like that then other good standalone Sam and Max episodes are 105 - Reality 2.0 or 201 - Ice Station Santa. There's some continuity to the Sam and Max games with recurring characters and what not so you might miss some of what's going on, especially in the season finales.

If on the other hand you'd prefer the Strong Bad game then episodes 2, 4, and 5 are all solid. These episodes are continuity light in relation to each other, although it helps a lot if you're familiar with the Homestarrunner.com content. Episode 1 was kind of a weak introductory episode and episode 3 was also weak.

Wallace and Gromit I haven't tried.

I envy you. I may have to get my memory wiped before this game comes out.

I'm a fan of Telltale but I have to agree that they might not have the chops to pull it off. Their games are very hit or miss. Some episodes are really good while others are a snooze. But still, it's a new Monkey Island game for f*ck's sake! How can you not be joyous over that?

I really don't know who at this point would be able to match the old Lucasarts in terms of adventure game writing, and even they had some misses from time to time. If it's going to happen, though, I think Telltale has the biggest chance of pulling it off successfully.

EDIT: Stupid Double posts. About Doublefine. I guess that's not so bad, then...

Doublefine? I mean, they aren't making the "point-and-click" adventures, but they make adventure games nonetheless...

I am game for this. Always wanted to play Monkey Island, but the old graphics are just too much to deal with. Not sure if I like the 3D approach. It limits the facial expressions quite a bit and of course any cartoony moves. Will still get it though

Never in the field of computer gaming was so much atmosphere conveyed by so few pixels.

...but, yeah, a graphics update won't hurt.

I wonder if they'll bring back the tree stump joke that got cut in the CD-ROM update.

I'm tired of hearing about that damn stump. Do you have any idea how many calls I get a DAY about that? Don't ask me about it again.

And I thought I never really finished the game!

I think this what they mean by deleted content... Still waiting for disk #23.

Stump-joke rehashes (from Wiki): The stump joke is also revisited in the game Grim Fandango where Manny Calavera will repeat the line of "Wow! It's a tunnel that opens onto a system of catacombs!", which is what Guybrush says when he examines the stump. In Tim Schafer's Psychonauts examining a hollow stump causes a similar reply, only this time it really does lead to a system of catacombs, serving as a fast travel system for the game.

LucasArts is going to be broadcasting a live playthrough today at Justin.tv, starting at 6 PM EST.

It is dark. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Those "cheeseball" jokes is part of what makes Sam and Max so good. Even the original game had them.

Lucasarts' Twitter feed indicates that the remake will hit Steam and XBLA on the 15th. Sure, wait until I'm on vacation to do it.

If I hadn't just played Monkey Island 1, Monkey Island 2, Monkey Island 3, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, and Grim Fandango I might be jumping on this day 1. Now I'm going to hope for a Steam deal later on in the year.

Tales of Monkey Island coming out soon-ish today the 7th. Can't wait!

Telltale are such teases.
