Monkey Island Remake & New Episodes Confirmed!

Pages

Holy Awesome!

LucasArts has confirmed that a remake of the original Escape from Monkey Island is coming to the 360 and PC and that new, episodic Monkey Island games are coming from Telltale for WiiWare and PC. There is certainly no better team on the planet that I'd want handling this than Telltale and I'd buy them all, sight unseen.

And for your viewing pleasure.

Sweet.

That's a great video too. Looks like they're sticking close to the original blueprint.

The ability to seamlessly flip between updated graphics and the original pixel code on the fly sounds really smart.

Thanks...you just made me send $35 to Telltale....AGAIN!

I'd like to know why they're not releasing the remake of the original on the Wii. I'd much rather play it with the Wiimote than a normal controller.

Yeah, I think this will be the... 3rd (?) time I've purchased the first game?

Pure awesome. Secret of Monkey Island was one of the games that came with the first computer (a 486!) my parents bought and I poured tons of hours into it. I love the fact that you can switch between the original and updated graphics. This is one of the few live arcade games I'm looking forward to.

Wah hey! That's the second biggest video game announcement I've ever seen!

That's great! I have fond memories of playing through the first 2 games with my Dad (on a 286, not like some peoples fancy 486's ). It's been long enough since I played it that a remake sounds great, especially as I'm sure the floppy's for my original will no longer work, if I could even find a PC that still has a floppy drive.

I think I must have done most of the puzzle solving in these games at the time though. My Dad's been stuck on the 3rd monkey island game since it came out but refuses to resort to a hint guide, maybe he'll finish it after he retires.

Telltale? Ugh.

Nice!

You're not a fan of the sam and max games?

when looking at the pre-order site I believe it is $35 for the new adventures (5 games) rather than for the remake of the fist game. I can't find any info about how much that will be.

He makes a convincing argument....

From the article it sounds as though Telltale is only doing the new episodes so that's probably why there's no information about the remake on their site.

I never got to play the original. I was eight and my mom thought Le Chuck looked too scary for me or something lame like that.

I just replayed Monkey Island 1, and then played through 2 and 3 last month and loved it.

Not too excited by the Telltale part either. Those terrible 3d graphics aren't nearly as appealing as the 2d drawings. Telltale does have licenses on some properties I really like; Wallace and Gromit, Homestar Runner, Bone, and now Monkey Island. I didn't really like the demo for Homestar Runner, and the images for the Wallace and Gromit game look worse than the Xbox Wallace and Gromit game. We'll see.

If the game looked like this, instant purchase.

I'm totally stealing this to post in the Adventure Gaming Catch-All.

I don't see much reason to be down on Telltale. So far I've found their games to be quite entertaining, though sometimes quite easy. I feel like they do try to tune the difficulty based on the intended audience, though (Sam & Max, for example, was definitely more challenging than Strong Bad) so I am hoping that Monkey Island falls on the more difficult end of the spectrum consistent to its pedigree.

Just watched the video for the Special Edition of Secret of Monkey Island. It looks awesome! Can't wait to play again with the recorded dialogue. The art and music seems pretty awesome too, plus it has a help feature so we may not need a FAQ to play. I'm much more excited about the remake then the new one.

Not at all. The writing is really really poor.

Best news ever. I look forward to fighting like a dairy farmer.

Unfortunately, as per Lucasfilm conventions regarding special editions, LeChuck will be shooting first and any time a pirate ship explodes, there'll be a tremendous shockwave. No, seriously, I'm looking forward to it. Stopping looking me like that.

Sold. 100 times over sold.

I hope they do this for LeChuck's Revenge as well, that would be fantastic.

Awesome! I'm definitely looking forward to the remake. I think Monkey Island was the first PC game I ever played. I'm glad they're not messing with the original, and Dominic Armato is the voice of Guybrush.

The new games, on the other hand...

I enjoy Telltale's game for what they are, but that video looks absolutely atrocious, and I worry about the writing. I worry they don't have the chops to do it justice.

If the Telltale sequel doesn't have Monkey Kombat, then I'd say it's an improvement over Escape from Monkey Island.

I'll buy them. And when I get them, I won't open the boxes right away. Instead, I'll stuff them in my pillow so I can dream about Monkey Island.

The Wii ScummVM port supports the Wiimote and it is glorious.

I never beat the first monkey island, so am definitely looking forward to the remake.
I'm with Sinatar on the new one, though - Sam & Max had far too many cheezeball jokes for me to be encouraged about their writing. Fortunately, they can't screw that part up in the old one

I'm pretty sure they have nothing to do with the remake. Might be wrong though.

I don't know how that double posted, sorry.

I'm a fan of Telltale but I have to agree that they might not have the chops to pull it off. Their games are very hit or miss. Some episodes are really good while others are a snooze. But still, it's a new Monkey Island game for f*ck's sake! How can you not be joyous over that?
