Tower defense games

I want to see a Tower Defense game that's a little more like turtling in RTSs. Not just shooting enemies as they follow a twisty twirly path for no reason, but an actual perimeter that enemies can attack from all angles. There are a few TD games out like that and are decent but there should be more! I also want to see one that's a little more Diablo-like, with loot. Like enemies could drop components with randomly generated bonuses, which you could fit to your towers to change their effect or boost their power.

Why not combine the two.. Turtling with loot! Best of both worlds. Which I would actually love.

I think one of the little things about Defense Grid that causes me to keep playing it is the fact that they have a checkpoint system and that to revert to any checkpoint you just keep pressing backspace until you get back to where you want.

This is so weird... I used to hate Tower Defense games with the passion of a billion fiery suns.

But then Plants vs Zombies appeared, and I thought to myself, you know, this one is fun, maybe I could try another one. So I spent $5 on Steam on Defense Grid...

Wow, it's a blast. I would never have expected these production values in such a bargain game. The interface is really slick, too, makes it very easy and fun to play.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm having fun with a Tower Defense game.

Defense Grid has been great, but I really want a way to speed things up. I keep hoping to get a message stating i can cause I think i noticed an achievement that lest you bump it up.

Press 'F' to speed up the wave.

Press and hold 'F' to speed up the wave.

Clarified.

I'm enjoying Defense Grid; nice way to kill 10 minutes.

Agreed. It's a wonderful transition after sinking 40 hours in PvZ. I'm loving the backspace checkpoint feature.
Semi-Pro Tip: Pressing T will bring up the Tactical Display. The bright line is the path of the flying units. Kill them!

Frontline Defense has a ton of maps and adds skill points to level up properties. There are also 3 difficulty settings for each level albiet there seems to be no benefit to playing it on hard vs easy other than e-peen and score (more e-peen).

This just made the game even better. Thank you so much.

I've been waiting for this to drop to 10$ somewhere so to get it at 5$ feels like I stole it!

I've been playing Immortal Defense. The story line is bizarre and there's so much eye candy I can hardly tell what's going on half the time. It's a little frantic because you're actively involved in the defense during the wave. Still enjoying it.

Dwarf Fortress is like a tower defense game, right?

So, there seems to be a series of people who feel that Plants Vs Zombies is not a tower defense game. Part of this based on the incorrect assumption that all tower defense allow you to snake the enmies through a self-created maze of turrets (there are some great versions of TD that have enmies flow through a game-designed route). I was wondering about other thoughts-- how Plants Vs Zombies does or does not qualify.

The only thing that I think might be in all of the TD variations I can think of, but not in PvZ, is the abilty to upgrade individual units (tho this is sort of in PvZ).

Everytime I read about PvZ I keep thinking it sounds like Tapper but with extra power-up doodads.

There is no way PvZ is not a tower defense game. You strategically place towers (in the form of plants) to defend a base from waves of creeps. It is a bit different from other TD games, but it is a TD game nonetheless. The differences are there, but the fundamentals are the same.

I think the people saying PVZ is not a tower defense game are people like me who utterly hated tower defense games and couldn't possibly imagine one that was worth playing.

Of course now I'm playing two of them. Curse you PopCap games! *shakes fist*

Defense Grid was an absolute steal for 5 bucks. As charming as PvZ is, I've been enjoying DG more. For some reason it just hits that compulsive "just one more level" sweet spot for me.

The music video at the end of PvZ was rather fun and charming too.

I just think PvZ is a simplified TD game. I also took advantage of the Defense Grid sale. Both are great games in their own right, to me it is like comparing Street Fighter to Mortal Kombat. Both are good games, just for different reasons.

I agree with previous posters Ninja Town is cool. However my favorite is still PJM at this point. To me it really overcame the fact that it was a console game in a great way.

BTW I would pay about .50 a level for a DG expansion. Just in case any publishers/developers are interested.

I might be crazy, but did anyone see the new video of Bioshock 2 and kind of see some tower defense in there? It is a stretch of the term certainly, but they seemed to be making it out as if defending the Little Sisters was going to be a common gameplay element. If you can set down traps, then I think it fits in a hybrid sort of way.

Same here, which isn't what I expected at all. Plants vs. Zombies left me bored out of my skull (it's not a bad game, just... *snore*), but I'm loving the hell out of Defense Grid. Every game from now on needs to have a funny British computer blathering on the whole time you're playing.

I missed the $5 deal. DG looks great, and I really wanted to pick it up for the cheap.

Raspberries!

I just played the Immortal Defense demo. I might never be the same again.

I downloaded the Square-enix game demo for Crystal Defenders. At first glance it really didn't interest me, especially when I thought about the fact that I owned Defense Grid and found that far more interesting (not to mention more visually appearing).

I've started going for gold medals in Defense Grid's story mode. Quite the challenge to see how few towers you can get away with. I'm zooming up the leaderboards, though! Mwaha!

OK. I need help with Immortal Defense. I'm stuck on level 91 (What is Sanity?). It's the one with all the Panopticons (big headed babies that have defenses that block your shots). The first solo panopticon, I just killed with some maxed circuit points, but I just can't seem to get through all their defenses. Any hints?

When it comes to TD games on the iPhone, I've now spent more time with The Creeps than any other...some interesting additional decisions to make, in particular related to having to spend time shooting stuff on the landscape to clear spots and make money (which is a trade off to shooting creeps) and in using special power thingies at just the right time.

Very challenging.

I bought Immortal Defense after playing the demo. This is an amazing game. The folks who made it deserve a lot of press for this one. Its by far the most interesting game I've played in the genre, except PvZ. But PvZ and Immortal Defense are entirely different sides of the genre.

I'm stuck on What Is Sanity? as well.
