Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

Could be.

Well, that trailer was grand. Want!

Oh, Relic. After all I've bought from you... Right in the heart.

So people keep complaining about this but I honestly don't see how it would work on the PC anyway. If this is going to be a combat RPG a la God of War with combos and everything it's going to play like crap using a mouse. This thing has console controller written all over it. I really don't desire or want a game where I click on enemies and watch a space marine chainsaw skewer them. Well, I do, but I've already played Dawn of War.

The Eurogamer article was pretty informative and I have to agree with Relic. You don't have a console port for Dawn of War because it doesn't play to the platform's strengths. I would hate to see them water down this game to shoehorn it onto the PC.

Same thing I was thinking...C'mon Relic! I've got a 360 controller plugged into my PC, meet me halfway!

Here's some gameplay footage. Looks Gearsy. The sense that I got from the overkill system is that it's a quicktime event reskinning.

That's definitely the leaked footage of the Space Marine game that got canned.

I never saw the previous footage before just now. Why was everyone so up in arms about it and saying it sucked? Looked like a testosterone filled GoW clone. I liked GoW and I know I'm not alone in that. Was it because it wasn't staying true to the 40k world or what?

No, it was just stupid. Guns were pretty much just to stun the enemy, they actually used a word like "cinemaction" with a straight face, they wanted a slo-mo sequence for EVERY kill. That's just off the top of my head. It actually had some promise, but needed a lot of work and probably a re-thinking of some ideas I'm sure seemed good at the time. Since it was just an alpha though I had hopes they'd turn it into a decent game.

That and I've hated every over-the-shoulder shooter i've played. 3rd person is fine.... but the OTS stuff really annoys me because it feels like i'm driving a tank.

Hum, with a controller?

360 controllers play flawlessly on PC

HAWT. Also yeah what the heck? 360 controllers make exceptional pc gamepads.

Aww, come on now, give me some PC love with this.

Regardless, this is a Day One if reviews look decent. Action-RPG Warhammer40k? That would be the game I wanted for the last, I dunno, 8 years?

What I really wish for is someone would do a Necromunda game

This. If they wanted to do an in your face action game where guns are the means to an end(in melee) they should have made the main character an Ork. Marines are good at melee combat(they're good at killing anything that moves, really though) and some of their best weapons and tactics in squads involves flanking and annihilation of your foes with righteous bolter fire.

I would settle for an updated version of Space Hulk.

Agreed.. I played Fallout 3 on my PC with the Xbox 360 controller and it was flawless.

Every time I see something like the Gears of War franchise and think that games can't get any more ludicrously macho, I'm reminded that 40k has had this covered for decades.

Brother Heinrich! I note with appreciation the flying buttresses on your Gothic shoulder armour, let us hoist our rapid fire hand howitzers and set to those miscreant orks!

Man, why can't someone just rip off Gears of War and change the setting to WH40K. In my mind that would be a match made in heaven - focus on solid gunplay but give the option of brutal melee. I'm intrigued by what Relic is developing, but my excite-o-meter isn't going off the wall for another God of War clone.

There is a Space Hulk Dawn of War mod, and a sequel to it for Winter Assault out there. I haven't had a chance to play them yet - I keep meaning to reinstall Dawn of War and check it out but I never get around to it. So they might not be any good, but they sure look interesting.

Hoping for awesomeness, but the track record of just about every Games Workshop licensed property in videogame form is 98% crap, 2% great.

Here's hoping for a 2%'er.. I'd pay for a reskinning of gears if the gameplay is there.

It's the most natural evolution of modern action video games to have one simply titled "Space Marine." It's the game equivalent of Snakes on a Plane: why have a title when a description will do? Those poor marketing departments that slaved over titles like Doom and Gears of War must be pulling their hair out. The answer was so obvious all along.

I've always thought the fascist, ultratheocratic medieval-knight-with-hyper-drive Space Marine in Warhammer was not very generic compared to the nameless Space Marine from Unreal or Doom. The trailer is doing a lot to convince me otherwise, though - it kind of looks like the same roided out brainless bald badass with armor and a gun from every other video game. The only thing he's missing is a hoodie - I can only guess that that's a loot drop.

Switchbreak wrote:

You only get a hoodie if you're a brooding, wall-climbing anti-hero. Roided-out badass space marines either go bald or wear a bandana.

The Dark Angels wear hoodies. At least, they did twelve years ago when I was really into Warhammer.

adam.greenbrier wrote:

They still do. Maybe more so now.

Chaos Gate was pretty bad. They used the same engine as Soldiers at War, which wasn't great to begin with. The idea was nice but the execution was only so-so.

Final Liberation was an excellent translation of the tabletop Epic 40K onto the computer. Unfortunately, if you didn't like the tabletop game I could see it not appealling much to wider audiences, so I am hesitant to comment on its quality.

Rites of War was just Panzer General with a WH40K skin. That's not a bad thing per se but it was pretty close to being a phoned in effort.

Can't comment much of the rest. Played the original Space Hulk which seemed to get by more on style than substance. It was ok, but pretty schizophrenic from what I recall. It wasn't an RTS, a turn-based tactical game, or an FPS. It was just kind of, something, weird.

I'm gonna take Johnvanjim to the mat there and call you out that 2% quality 98% crap is a huge exaggeration.

Games Workshop has generally managed their properties pretty responsibly and been on a good roll quality wise.

We currently have:
* DoW1 + its three expansions. The first 3 expansion definitely extended the game in a quality direction, the last one wouldve been better received if its bugs were patched quicker.
*Warhammer Online
* Dawn of War 2
* That tactical PSP / DS W40k game

Personal tastes aside, they are generally all recognized as quality releases/gaming experiences.

If you go back in time a bit, there were:
* Rites of War (tactical wargame)
* Shadow of the Horned Rat
* Dark Omen
* Chaos Gate (Xcom like turn based strategy)
* Space Hulk and its remake seem to be remembered fondly. It was never my thing.

I dont know how Final liberation or the original Blood Bowl were received at the time. They are such old tech nowadays...

The only true stinkers I'm aware of are:
* Warhammer Battlemarch / Mark of Chaos
* W40k: Fire Warrior <- On this one, I played it years after its release, my judgement might be harsh. I think they aimed for Halo and they were pretty spot on technology wise, but.. it underdelivered nonetheless.

Take that Mr 2%er....

or shall i say Heretic. Call in the Imperial inquisitors.

Add Final Liberation: Warhammer Epic 40,000 to that 2%. Pretty decent, if you like the Epic 40K TT game, would be a bit dated right now. Definately not in that 98% crap pile.

The original Space Hulk pc game, it simply rocked. Really captured the essence of the TT game. Its right up there with Ogre (the Steve Jackson TT wargame converted to a single player PC game) and X-Com, as far as I'm concerned.

I have no clue about Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels, I never owned any of the systems it was released for. Ditto for Space Crusade.

And then there is the recent addition to the list: Blood Bowl. I tried it briefly during the beta, it seemed to be a true adaptation of the TT game. It didn't work for me, however, there were too many random elements in the course of play, left me too frustrated to continue. That's not a flaw of the computer game, however, but of the basic gameplay it replicated.

Rites of War received poor marks in the reviews, I never played it, not sure why. Was probably busy with TF Quakeworld and then Tribes back then.

Shadow of the Horned Rat received complaints about it being too hard. *shrug*

Overall, GW IP turned electronic have done pretty well.

The Games Workshop Wiki has quite a few that you did not list. Most I have never heard of though.

From this list I've enjoyed Blood Bowl (1995), Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels, Final Liberation, Dawn of War, Chaos Gate, Squad Command, Warhammer Online, Dawn of War 2, and the new Blood Bowl which is in development.

Oh and this interview that I just came across while looking for GW pc games gets me giddy!

eurogamer wrote:

Blood Bowl developer Cyanide reckons there is a "niche market" ready to gobble-up conversions of tabletop games. And not just Games Workshop licences, but ones such as Necromunda, Space Hulk, Man O'War and "plenty of others".

"If Games Workshop continues to trust us, then sure, why not," Cyanide's Antoine Villepreux told Eurogamer when asked if the collaboration might continue. "They have got other 'forgotten' IPs that we think deserve videogame adaptations."

Yes, Yes, Yes and YES! Now I really hope Blood Bowl does well cause I'd love to see more GW games go digital.

*Temporary thread jack*

Can someone please enlighten me? Where did the WH40K world come from? From what I gather it was a board game at one point? is this correct? Like a D&D type of game or something? Where did the DoW part come in? all of the sudden it went from dwarfs and orks type of thing to giant bad ass space ninja-marines?? I played DoW II and really liked it. I also tried out the MMO WH40K seemed ok, but I'm not allowed to play MMOs so I didn't dive too deep. Where can I catch up on the back story to all this?

In defense of my highly opinionated 98%/2% comment, it's probably because I was so passionate about the Fantasy/40k worlds back in High School/College, and every single RTS I played based on those licenses sucked copious amounts of ass on the PC/Playstation. I wanted them to turn out well, but I was constantly cisappointed, right up until Dawn of War came out.

As for the games I tried out:

In my opinion, these were all bad.. The Space Hulk FPS on 3D0 was promising, but ultimately executed badly. Ditto the Squad command game, it was promising, but so stripped down as to become repetitive in no time whatsoever.
Dark Omen (RTT game based on Warhammer Fantasy Battles)
Shadow of the Horned Rat (RTT game based on Warhammer Fantasy Battles)
Space Hulk - Vengeance of the Blood Angels (Space Hulk)
Final Liberation (Epic 40,000 - Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Orks)
Fire Warrior (Warhammer 40,000 - Tau)
Battle March (Add-on)(Armies same as Mark of Chaos, also: Dark Elves)
Squad Command, a turn based strategy game which focuses on a squad of ultramarines fighting chaos space marines.

On the positive side:
I loved the original Space Hulk and Space Crusade games on the Amiga. Then again they were pretty much literal translations of the board game. Dawn of War was ok, but there were some fundamentally jarring issues with swarmy/fast gameplay, I think I was spoiled by Company of heroes by the time I rolled around to the later DoW expansions. DoW2 was excellent, but ultimately got repetitive in mission design and repurposing multiplayer maps for use in the singleplayer experience.

I'm still waiting for the epitome of the Warhammer 40k experience, one that lives up to the gothic backstory/setting and hits with the force of a Triple-A title. Ala, a Gears of War level polished game (in graphics and gameplay) but drawing from the massive backstory and possibilities of the 40k universe. DoW2 came the closest, here's hoping that Space Marine can clinch it.
