Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

My world was officially rocked today.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine pre-E3 preview on IGN

Debut Trailer

About a year ago, we saw some leaked, pre-alpha footage that didn't strike the fancy of many folks. Without much more to go on, the game was somewhat dismissed by some as a going to be failure.

The above trailer and preview makes it sound like this is going to be the WH40K game the fans have wanted for a long time. The best piece of news in the preview is the fact that the game is being made by Relic. Relic has masterfully captured the tone and atmosphere of the WH40K universe in their Dawn of War series, so I have the up most faith that they will do it again here.

Some quick highlights from what I glimpsed in the preview and trailer:

- Large number of enemies on the screen at one time.
- Chaos (from the pre-alpha footage), Orks, and Tyranids are in the game already
- Multiple weapons and wargear for the player to use. It looks like jump packs will even be usable.
- The trailer showed a squad of 4 marines battling Orks, and Relic has confirmed multiplayer will be a big part of this. Co-op is a strong possibility.
- Possibility of doing one on one duels with larger boss monsters.

While no release date has been set yet for the game, this has no become my number one anticipated title for the for-foreseeable future.

This makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

I will buy this so hard.

HOT DAMN. I've been waiting for someone to do a proper action 40K game forever, and well, this looks like the real deal. Relic's been very good with the licence so far, as well as being an all-round high quality developer.

Holy sh*t, I just got into work and I already wet my pants.

Is this the game that uses Cinemaction?

I can't watch the trailer until I get home from work tonight.

I actually liked the old pre-alpha footage that got leaked. It had a lot of problems and didn't really look like it was a proper game yet, but the architecture was all big and medieval like Warhammer 40K should look.

Yeah, the cinemaction was amazing but some of it was a bit killographic for me. I am not always comfortable with that level of goremation included in my fighting.

Is it just me or do the character models / graphics / animations look like they came strait out of Dawn of War 2 (Towards the end of the trailer)? Reusing the same engine and assets perhaps?

So this is going to be a Diablo or a God of War + RPG? It would be pretty cool if it was the latter.

Yeah, looks a lot like Dawn Of War 2, but I guess that only makes sense.

This looks pretty awesome and I hope they can pull it off. The only other non-RTS they did (The Outfit) was mediocre at best but apparently this is an all-new team who specializes in this kind of game. I am very hopeful.

No love for the PC for this one? Bummer.

I was going to make a cinemaction joke, and then you went and pulled the rug right out from under me. Well done.

Abomination! They forsake the Emperor's chosen gaming platform, the PC? Call forth the Inquisition!

I'm still waiting for Wahammer 40K:Total War... i think that's my ultimate franchise dream.

I'm not really feeling this game at all... apart from the survivability/kill-ratio of 4 space marines against a horde of orks, there's the whole four-man squad thing. I am interested to know how they'll handle the squad mechanic as opposed to the 3rd person hack and slash style gameplay they showed off last time. I wonder if it'll be a Republic Commando style control or if the player will be able to swap the character on the fly.

No PC release? Ugh.

There was a laundry list of complaints based on the alpha walkthrough, so I REALLY hope they rethought some of their choices.

I predict mediocrity with a slight chance of another Fire Warrior. Of course, I secretly hope for something awesome, but it's unlikely based on what we've seen.

I'm hoping that they let us Multiplayer it so we don't have to rely on the Stupid AI to ensure that when you tell them to Overwatch it really is going to be facing the right direction.

That and I'm all giggly inside. First Blood Bowl, and now my beloved Space Marines! /joy!

Ah... now i understand. I take back my interest comment and my confusion between the different footage from this and the previous trailer.

Looks like it's a completely different game now:

Yup. Sources have told us that the original action title was cancelled, but that THQ thought some parts were worth salvaging, and handed the leftovers over to Relic to turn into this action RPG.

It looks like it's pretty much a console version of Dawn of War 2.

I'm getting more of a Too Human vibe out of the trailer, with different classes and, oh please, multiplayer co-op? This could be a loot dropping well of goodness. Except that things don't actually drop out of wells.

Ok, the trailer was plenty cool, but how does it play?

The original concept was so incredibly bad that I feel kind of leery about the game now. On the other hand, if they do it right I am extremely interested.

Hey I think I see a Warlord Titan around 1:17 way off in the back ground. Sure does look nice and the spacemarine with the sword reminds me of a former ufc champion. I didn't see any Terminator armor and no Chaplains or Librarians either. So curious if it is just your basic tactical, assault and devastator marines? Cause that is all I saw.

Exactly what i thought... some of those moves were very Too Human like.

While i do LOVE me some 40k action this one is suspect especially with it being for the 360 only.

If this doesnt pan out for the PC then the 40k MMO may be the only decent 40k action we'll see for it.

This apparently a different game then was announced earlier in the year. That was was scrapped and the remains handed off to Relic.

EDIT: See Duoae's comment

From Kotaku:
UPDATE 1- A post on Relic's boards says that this title is not the same game that was leaked in that video from last year. That clip was "for an action title Studio Aus was working on. This is a totally different project, though it does share the same name as the leaked video used."

Sounds like the action game in development at THQ Australia may have been binned, then shifted to Relic and cannibalised for parts. We'll look into it, see if the action game is still being worked on or not.

UPDATE 2 - Yup. Sources have told us that the original action title was cancelled, but that THQ thought some parts were worth salvaging, and handed the leftovers over to Relic to turn into this action RPG.

I'm not too bothered by this being a console only release. I think we got a great game in Dawn of War 2 and it would be wise of Relic and THQ to set their focus on the console and expand the Warhammer IP in that space.

Hrm, hearing it described as an action RPG rather than a straight shooter like the old leaked footage makes me much more interested in it.

True. I like the PC as much as anyone, but my console systems need to earn their keep too.

They also have a ps3 trailer, looks exactly the same to me though. Is www.spacemarine.com empty for everyone else? Wondering if it is just another browsing feature of IE8...

THQ's site has it listed as a FPS which I like and they link a review at Eurogamer. One thing I found interesting in the review is they say the Ultramarines are a placeholder chapter for an as-yet unidentified chapter.

Oh, Relic. After all I've bought from you... Right in the heart.

Here's some gameplay footage. Looks Gearsy. The sense that I got from the overkill system is that it's a quicktime event reskinning.

I could be wrong, but that looks like the version of the game that got scrapped before it was sent over to Relic (what I called the pre-alpha footage).
