Favorite old games

""How come yer playing computer games if yer that old?!?!"" Anyway, nice to find this site.

You''ll be in good company here, then. Sometimes I think we''re as much a support group as a gaming site.

Glad to have you along, Roo.

Roo, welcome! Yer thinking of Rogue. Those damned ""H"" hydras and ""M"" medusas were are real Female Doggo. I think I found the amulet of yendor and made it back out only once!

I will add my name to the list of SSI DnD game supporters and Privateer/WC2 supporters.

There are a couple of old school Apple 2e games called Starblazers and Evolution. I hope some of you remember those!

You guys cant forget about Space Quest. Especially 1&2!

Here it comes:

Space Hulk
X-Com
TIE Fighter
SSI Anything
Syndicate
Civilization
Raven and id''s pre-accelerated games in general
WarCraft
Arena
Daggerfall

I think I''ll stop there, before I start naming things for the next rest of my life.

Thanks Elysium. Now that I''ve found you all, I''m sure I''ll be hanging out here writing posts that are way too long. I''m kind of verbose you might say. Still on this side topic, if anyone is interested in nice adult site for CS, you can PM me or whatever.

Back on topic, I think Rogue was a later version of this game...i swear it was called maphack or something like that. But yeah, beware the yellow Ms and the red Ds, unless you''re lucky enough to polymorph into one. There were multiple versions of these, the one where you could find an egg and have it eventually hatch into a random pet that leveled with you being my fav.

The game you''re referring to is called NetHack, and it truly is one of the greatest games. If you can allow yourself to play a game that doesn''t push a single poly (or sprite for that matter), you really owe it to yourself to give it a try. Since it''s been developed for so long, literally everything you can think of to do in the game has been programmed in. You find a sink and think, ""Hmm...I wonder what would happen if I kicked the sink?"" You better believe it''s already been done and programmed with an appropriate consequence. You can still get your fix by downloading the latest version for your favorite platform at http://www.nethack.org/.

EDIT: Oh yeah...NetHack was based on Rogue, though, so fang was right, too.

My list (in approximate historical order):

Wizardry I
Bard''s Tale I
Ultima III, IV & VI
Autodual
Rescue Raiders
Wings of Fury*
Wizards Crown
Empire Deluxe* (recently re-released by www.killerbeesoftware.com )
Out of this World
Star Control II
Might and Magic III
Ultima Underworld
Space Hulk*
X-Com*

Hi, guys! Lifelong gamer (20 years) here who just found this excellent webpage for the mature gamer.

My list of the classics over my extensive gaming career:

1. Telengard
2. Ultima 3
3. Bard''s Tale
4. Mail Order Monsters
5. Out of This World
6. Half-Life (the ONLY FPS I''ve ever really been interested in)
7. Zork
8. Warcraft II
9. Autoduel - took me 20 years to finish this one.
10. Sanitarium - even my wife, a non-gamer, played loved this game.

Hate to spam the replies but I have to thank you for the correction and especially for posting the link. I''ll definitely need to spend some nostalgia time with the latest nethack.

Ygdrasil, thanks so much for that link. I''ve been having a blast playing through that game again. Damn, Star Control 2 really needs to be remade!

Hey, I had Pools of Radiance for C64 too! So many great games on that system. Had Bards Tale as well, plus Legacy of the Ancients.

Other great old games -

Centipede
Super Mario - still play this
Anyone remember the D&D game for Sega Genesis?
X-Com and System Shock of course.
Civ 1
Lords of the Realm (back when Sierra was good)
Populous
Marble Madness
Tetris!

First time poster, relatively new reader here, I love this site and the un-biased reporting

I absolutely practically love all of the above mentioned games...especially Ultima IV and V, Bards Tale, Star Control 2..

A couple I didn''t see mentioned:
Legacy of the Ancients and The Legend of Blacksilver both on C-64

Those games were so cool, developed by the same guy who also developed Questron and Questron II I believe.. I loved being able to go into a town, rob the bank, and have to fight the guards to get out heheh what fun what fun...

Keep up the excellent work!

Nethack.

Commando
Russin'' Attack
Myth
Ikari Warriors (how times have changed Ikari = Iraki backwards)
Net Trek
Arashi
Sirtet Voyager
Sim City 2000 (I''m SURE the launch archologies actually launch into space when you ""beat"" the game)
Tomb Raider 1
Marathon
Madden 93
Sega NHL 93 (love the sound effects and the blood)
Rygar for NES

Welcome to the site Kal, glad you found us!

Metroid (NES)
Shadowrun (SNES)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
Warcraft II (PC)

and as always...

DOOM

On none other than the x86, baby!

Pulse, I''ve got to commend you on your choices of Rygar and Ikari Warriors (to this day when I pick up a controller, my fingers lovingly trace the old ABBA cheat), but Russin'' Attack?! Yegods, that game blew on the console AND in the arcade.
But, since I''ve brought up the Arcade:
Elevator Action
Gauntlet
That One Variation on Donkey Kong Where You Were the Guy With the Spray Can of Insecticide and You Would Have to Defeat Kong and His Hordes of Bees. I think it was called ""Apiary Apogee.""

Welcome Kal! Finally another player that remembers Legacy of the Ancients, I also mentioned it in my post. I think I still have that game around here some where, my last from the C64 days, I just love the cover art.

I thought the Museum concept, with the different coins needed to access other items, lands, and dungeons was really cool. Legend of Blacksilver was very similar, and the graphics looked almost the same, especially the dungeons.

I did forget all the early MicroProse games too... Gunship, Silent Service, F-15 Strike Eagle, Pirates! which was mentioned earlier... oh yeah those games kept me busy for a looooong time I got to meet Sid Meier at the CES when it was in Chicago in 1993, it was really a treat for me. He is weird LOL I told him how much time and money I spent on his games heheh

Reading this thread really makes me want to get off my ass and build myself the DOS box I''ve been thinking about forever. I''ve been meaning to do this for about the last year and always find a reason to put it off. I''ve got everything I need sitting in a box under my desk and ready to go even.

lol. Remember when you got off the ladders your guy would jump uncontrollably to the left or right?

It was one of the first games I remember being able to play at the same time with my next door neighbor growing up. So it holds a special place in my heart. Just like Contra, Ikari Warriors, etc.

Ahh, Legend of Blacksilver. I thought I was the only one who had ever played that game. I still remember the cheesy guitar chords that would come out of my Apple 2 when I won at blackjack or the dragon slot machine. Has anyone else played the sequel to Wizard''s Crown, Eternal Dagger? One of the best RPGs I''ve ever played.

Lately, I''ve been getting a lot of mileage out of Jane''s F-15 and Jane''s F/A-18. F/A-18 has better graphics and a fully-interactive 3-D cockpit, but F-15 had a more immersive campaign and, let''s face it, a better aircraft. If there was some way to bring the F-15E and a full 3-D cockpit into F/A-18''s graphic engine...

Hopefully, either there''ll be a revival of these hard-core study sims or LO-MAC (still not sure about it; not enough NATO/American aircraft to pique my interest, and there''s no A/G radar at all) will be good enough to breath some life back into the modern combat flight simulator genre.

Off the top of my head...

Zork
Quest For Glory (Hero Quest)
Xwing
Final Fantasy II
Civilization

Admittedly, I think I was eight years old while playing Zork, and really had a hard time with it. In fact, I remember some sort of dam that I couldn''t figure out how to operate, and some sort of troll..so many good memories of the C64. And the excitement of when I got a C128 for Christmas! Man that feels like a long time ago.

By the way, does anybody know how to get a copy of Zork? Now that I have a graduate degree, I figured I''m qualified enough to get farther in the game than giggling at the responses the game would give when you curse at it.

Oh yeah, and Techmo Bowl was really awesome too.

Bosephus, check out classicgaming.com They have many of your C64 favorites (and others) as ROMs with links to emulators for ''em.
Of course, none of you must construe this message as an indication of my taking a side in the ROM debate. I''m just passing on information, for novelty purposes only.

actually the last time I checked downloading C64 Roms is not considered piracy. Same goes for a lot of Amiga Disks where the publishers gave explicit allowance to make them available as a download.
A completely different thing is old PC games which people often refer to as Abandonware. That said I personally have no problem with someone downloading old C64 Roms or giving links to sites offering the disks, but since abandonware is a grey zone I would not link to such sites.

Just my 0.02€

Update: I tried and look after some proof for what I just said. Fact is that several of the C64 sites have allowances just like their amiga counterparts to publish these games for free. So as it currently stands, if the site has green-light to offer the game you want to download, you are not violating copyright laws. Problem with this is that many of the old publishers especially of the C64 are no longer in business nor are many of the devs.

If the company that owns the copyrights is defunct, and they don''t renew their copyrights, isn''t there something like a 17 year time period, after which the work is considered in the public domain?

I may be mixing up US copyright and patent laws - which raises another question: is the choice of law used against a software pirate the law of the location where the pirate is? or where the software is copyrighted(copyrighten)?

Oh, and I googled Zork, and found a seemigly-official Infocom site to download it from. Thanks for the heads up Ygdrasil.

good question. In germany the copyright holds until 40 years after the copyright holder is dead/defunct. After that period it is considered public domain if not descendants renew the copyright.
That leads to a funny outcome for classic music btw. Beethoven''s symphonies may not be published without permission of his descendants, but everyone may play them, because there is no interpretation that is copyrighted. Just the written notes.

Ahh, Zork. What a great series. But remember when they put out that god-awful graphical version?
