Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

So i finally made the plunge and dumped Blockbuster Online for Netflix. The deal killer was Blockbuster no longer sending a new movie as soon as you returned the old one if you picked up a free rental at the store.

A couple of weeks ago I did the same thing for the same ultimate reason, and I couldn't be happier with Netflix. I'm saving money, getting better service, and sticking to Blockbuster at the same time. I was on the 3 dvd at a time plan so I took the three I received in the mail to the nearest store, exchanged them for three in-store rentals, returned home, and promptly canceled my service. The beauty is they are letting me keep the in-store rentals until 05/07/09!

We stick to the one movie out at a time plan. We're busy, and getting through that many movies is not convenient. As you said, we went from 11.99 to 8.99, and now have streaming movies and TV shows to go with out discs in the mail.

ohh I'll definitely check that one out. It will give me something to do as I wait for the constantly unavailable Quantum of Solace. I think it's going to be on HBO before I get the damn disc from Netflix.

I wonder how much that depends on location? I've got that in my queue, and it shows as "available now". Whether that has to do with my local distribution center or the fact that it's currently sitting at #74 in the queue is open for question.

Glancing at the front page Netflix gives me for "watch instantly", I see a number of things I am really not interested in, including Eraserhead, Don't Mess with the Zohan, and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. It's nice to know I could watch Dr. Strangelove any time I wanted to, though.

I've been watching a LOT of the Watch Instantly lately. Some of my favorites so far:

Michael Palin's Around the World in 80 Days
Michael Palin's Pole to Pole
Man on Wire
Smart People
Everest: Beyond the Limit
Small Town Gay Bar
The Man from Earth
Born Into Brothels
Planet B-Boy
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Cashback

I've got a PS3 dammit! Send me my Bond!

I think it does have to do with location, although this is the first time I've had to wait this long for any DVD (bluray or not)

I've been waiting for disc 4 of Princess Nine for about two years. It's always out.

Yeah but "Princess Nine" looks like something that netflix would only have a very limited set of DVDs. One would think they would have a ton of Quantum of Solace discs. Watch the movie and return it people!

I just saw that american Movie is now listed among the watch instantly. This ia fun, hilarious documentary about a couple of guys trying to produce a low budget horror film. It's a doc in the same vane as a current release The Story of Anvil. True story, but feels more like a mockumentary.

I really can't recommend this enough.

The selection changes but if Jesus Camp is still available, prepare to be scared sh*tless.

Wow.. 5 minutes into this and I'm already terrified.. This is quite possibly a better horror movie then anything I've ever seen.

I guess it shouldn't surprise me, but I just don't understand why and how people get this way.

That is a hard watch, but worthwhile.

Even as an atheist with a strong feelings against fundamentalism of any sort, I can't bring myself to watch that. I've seen excerpts and seeing those kids abused like that is gut-wrenching, and infuriating.

My own submission to this thread (and which has probably been submitted already) is

"Pan's Labyrinth"

I was utterly fascinated by "Crumb" (documentary on R. Crumb's life), but it's not for everyone.

The PlayOn software also supports Netflix Instant Watch, although the queue support wasn't fully there the one time I tried it.

Don't know if it has been listed, but "nothing but trouble" with chevy chase and demi moore is on there. A horrible, horrible, train wreck of a movie that I seem to watch over and over again.

For fans of Mythbusters, check out seasons 1 and 2. Very different from the later seasons, a lot of competitions. The formula was a lot different, and they tested more classic urban legends, Darwin Awards type stuff. And witness the birth of Buster.

I like this movie, for whatever reason. The appearance by Digital Underground is certainly a part of it. And it has a great cast, despite the weirdness. I think perhaps the style of the movie is a throwback to older movies - like, Don Knotts era or something. I may be totally off there.

I liked Nothing but Trouble too... I remember watching it later (when a bit older) and seeing Tupac out there!

Attention Bruce Campbell fans, My Name is Bruce is now on Watch Instantly.

Hey, I just watched a Bruce C...

Dang! bennard, you rapscallion, you beat me to it. I really enjoyed My Name is Bruce; to me it was funny without being hilarious, and watchable and likable overall.

I jumped over to Netflix to queue it up and discovered it was already there. Either I had already done it or Netflix REALLY knows me.

Netflix will automatically do that for you when movies you've previously queued become available on Watch Instantly. Nice feature!

Our cheapass Netflix membership is currently paying for itself with the first two seasons of 30 Rock on Watch Instantly.

Quite possibly the funniest US TV show I've ever seen.

The Tracy Jordon/Jack Donahee therapy session scene deserves a place in the comedy hall of fame right next to "who's on first" and Lenny Bruce's "blah blah blah".

Agreed. I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of the shows to hit.

We've been watching Season 3 partially on TV, and partially on Hulu (via PlayOn and the 360). They only have the last 6 episodes or so, but it's not like you can't watch them out of order.

'Let the Right One In' - pretty dang creepy foreign vampire horror flick. I wish this was required viewing before anyone was allowed to see 'Twilight'.

The last ten minutes were a bit cheesy but still a captivating film overall.

Just noticed -- Clash of the Titans on here. Awesome watch. I probably watched this a million and a half times when I was a kid.

My wife just got back from the Canary Islands where they are currently filming the remake.

Just discovered that the first season of Star Trek: TOS is available in the remastered edition on instant. Just the one so far.
My gf and I watched Arranged, which is an indy movie about two women teaching in a new york school, one jewish and one muslim and how their cultures handle arranged dating and such. Pretty interesting if you're into that sort of thing. Solid acting, timing and dialogue.

Great.. Liam Neeson as Zeus. Meh, I guess so.
Ralf Fiennes as Hades certainly seems a fit though.

I know this is not a gem, but anyone using Winodws 7 Rc having issues using watch now?

Ooh... and the 13th warrior is insta-watch now too.

Speaking of which, Rob Roy is available!
