What's the best MMOG?

Seems PS is the ""actual"" game of choice... but is it really the best MMOG ever? you made me at least curious

I dont know PS, and so my winner is:

""Anarchy Online""

I played it over a year now and i really like it. Wonderful big world with many special places to visit. Even after a year there are cool places i see for the first time.
I also like the many ways i can tune my Avatar in looks and in skills, its complex first, but later on you like the tons of items and implants you can use to raise various skills.
Since i''m a casual gamer i like the mission-system where i can log on and do something fast, even if i have only an hour to play... in other games i can forget to even find a group in that time.

The only other online-games i played so far are T4G, UO, D2, DAoC, SWGBeta and some shooters.

Ah... yes. Clearly you''re only a rank beginner. Mother''s milk still dripping from your lips and all that. Er, certainly no basis of comparison from that short of a list. I mean, who could claim a position of judgment who hasn''t played, for instance, Motor City Online?

- ""Do I detect a note of sarcasm?""
- ""Are you kidding, this baby''s off the chart.""
- Comic Book Guy: ""Oh a sarcasm detector, that''s a real useful invention. (BOOM)""

It certainly can be with what they''ve proven so far. If they add a vehicle or 2 every couple of months. If they flesh out some of the ""trade"" skills like stealth, medic, and hacking.

If they introduce the alien race''s return that forces a restructuring of the factions with enhancements to current weapons. (oh you know its coming. can you say first expansion pack?) It may be a creative way to do something like a server wipe that lets you keep your certs. The have BR and CR xp, whats to stop them from having oh lets call it AR xp with AR ranks that access advanced equiptment and or make mods to improve armor or weapons.

4 factions is too watered down so that''s were the restructuring comes in to combine factions based on whether they welcome the aliens return or not or are neutral.

The PS devs have shown a talent for balancing. I have confidence a big shake up like this can be done.

Fang, (and anyone else)

Where do you see PS in a few years? say year 2 and year 3?

I''m curious to what people think long term for this game...

Has there been any word from the Devs on a long term vision for the game?

I''d love to see Planetside develop a wider range of skill sets and perhaps a bit of a story like Fangs talking about.

I''m hoping in the long term the game will develop into something where tactics will come to the front more than it currrently is (it''s more a case of throw loads of bodies at the problem I rarely see a lot of tactics)
I''d like to see larger more organised armies facing each other, specific groups being formed, like armoured cavalry divisions MAX divisions etc
It''ll definately need new content as it stands I can''t see it keeping regular players around longer than a year. Different more varied base desigs layouts and facilities would be nice as at the minutes everything other than continent design is very generic.

If they keep adding the tools (Navy, Transport vehicals, weapons, troop organization (working platoons)) and add some elements (blast doors on bases, island bases with no bridges to them, sky bases) I think the rest falls into place.

You already have a successful game, it seems more players are coming then leaving (at least if lag is any indication ) so if you keep the current game ''fresh'' by adding new elements and streamline efficient game playing, I think you''ll keep a bunch of players....at least until the next PS type game comes out.

In my experience, PlanetSide is the most overall fun in the MMO arena. That is, of course, as long as you''re looking for an action game.

Camelot became my favorite MMORPG, hands down. I liked the realm variety, the class options, and the emphasis on PvP as an endgame. It doesn''t require that Mythic keep churning out content, and fighting other players always brings a fresh experience.

As much as I hate to say it though, EverQuest must be given some recognition. It is absolutely vast. I think you could definitely have a good time with EverQuest, but I would suggest you play on a specialty server. Something like the PvP teams servers, or the roleplay server. It adds quite a bit to the game, I think.

...armoured cavalry divisions...

You and me, both. I actually had some decent conversation in a thread on the PlanetSide board about tanks, and why we really aren''t seeing anything like what you mentioned. In a nutshell, they lack the depth to keep players committed to playing only armor. Here''s a link to the thread, if you want to check it out: http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/planetside/Forum8/HTML/002642.html

I want slow floating ship ""bases"" that are indescriminate and AI controlled. The 3-5 ""towers"" protecting them are 3x size heavy MAXs that have double the hp of a gal. You cant take em over but you can disable them to make them ""warp"" out for a regeration period.

That oughta spice things up when your waiting 15 min uncontested for a base to cap and it can also liven under populated servers. I''d say only 2 per continent. And its capped at 2000 xp per ""base"" dismantle and 1000 xp per Giant MAX.

Did I mention this ""base"" spawns/drops spit fire turrets? It also respawns a tower every 5 minutes.

Wouldnt you love to see the fireworks of massive amounts of ammo being unloaded to try and take these guys out? Picture downing an enemy Gal and multiply it by 10!

The skyguard is an upgrade to the ineffective harraser. I am going to assume they will make upgrades to the other weak vehicles like the Mosquito, Lightning and perhaps the Basilisk or give the Wraith a weapon (defensive?).

Jumpgate, ''nuff said.

@Ygdrasil: Motor City Online closes in September, so i thought i better dont add it
Ah, and i forgot Earth&Beyond... which is still the first rank holder for me in the category ""most boring gameplay""
Electronic Arts stopped development of UO2 to release things like E&B and Sims Online... i wonder if there where some heads cut

@Veloxi: i dont know Jumpgate... can you say me your reasons why you find it the best?

@topic: Since i''m a gamer with Job AND internet connection, i now know a lot mor about PS.
Wow, Guys... it says pretty much ""buy me"" to me
Could you answer me a few questions?
- I heard its very difficult to get a squad as a newbie, is this right?
- Since i live in germany, i usually dont have a good ping to oversea servers, where is the euro-server werner located and can i play with a ping of 200-300ms? (dsl in germany usually has no fast path)
I have problems in bf1942 where i mostly suck with my ping.
- How valid is it to play an engineer or medic? I would like to try a supporter but only if its not boring or impossible to play.

In answer to those questions

1 No it''s not that difficult to get a squad, you could be an axperienced player starting a new character it''e hard to tell unless you announce you''re a newbie player. It seems to me to be much easier to get a squad on Werner server than some of the US servers

2 I have no idea where the server is located but I sometimes have much higher pings than those stated (I have a 160K cable modem) and I normally only have a problem when 20-30 players crowd stairwells in tower defences.
It''s much more dependent on your PC spec and especially how much RAM your PC has.

3 If your playing BF1942 with the latest patch (earlier patches didn''t do much) and your ping sucks then you might have problems. but genetrally I can run both fine and actually have more probs with BF1942 than PS (don''t get me started about Server Admin mind you!)

4. Playing as an engineer is pretty dependent on reinforced armour as you need 2 rifle slots 1 to hold your repair tool and the other for your rifle otherwise you''re liable to die fumbling in your inventory for your repair tool. Engineer are VITAL in a squad as repairing armour vechiles and especially turrets is a godsend in base defences!

Medics however suck unless you''re in a super organised squad who know what they''re doing as most people die and immediately resurrect without seeing if a medics around.Even wounded people run around so much a medic can''t get them to hold still enough to heal them. At the minute a casual player shouldn''t even think about being a medic. You''re much better spending Certs on anything else!

As much as I despise Sniper cert, it would be excellent for a starting player. You dont kill people really fast but as you learn the quirks, you can kill 5-10 people at extreme range without dying.

Infiltration suit cert is really cheap and its worth it just to witness its excellent implementation. Combine this with wraith ATV cert and you can cloak while riding it!

With engineer cert you can also select combat engineer which allows you to plant mines and automated turrets!

Combine infiltration suit and combat engineer and have some real fun that doest require advanced FPS skills.

Galaxy transports are sluggish to fly but if you pick up the cert, you will never have problems finding a squad.

Geez I''ve picked up the sniper cert again after dropping it a while back as I''ve been in a couple of places where I could''ve easily killed 3 or 4 snipers presenting themselves as easy targets on ridgelines, but I''ve found I need combat engineering to mine behind me as I''ve been sneaked up on and killed far too many times recently (Kudos Razorlord on Werner you''re an awesome assasin) despite darklight and the audio amp. I''ve also killed many infils recently by sittingt behind a team of snipers with my pulsar and darklight on waiting for a cloaker to just show up (they inevitably do) Ho ho and you thought you''d sneak up on me!

Okay I''m slowly getting talked into getting Planetside, in part just so i''ll understand all of the acronyms you all are slinging around. Assuming I do get Planetside anyone mind pointing me to good newbie guide type stuff (HL and CS are only FPS games I''ve played. assuming you don''t count the demo version of doom back in 1995 or whatever).

http://middenface.pwp.blueyonder.co....

This is a VERY brief guide to some of the brifer aspects of planetside
You should also check out the officia plnetside website and their forum section as they normally have some advice for new players.

The PS game manual actual does a reasonable job of explaining everything well enough to jump in. The Prima guide is as usual a steaming pile os useless crap.

Jumpgate is a mix of space sim and role playing. Instead of running around and clicking an ""attack"" button, waiting for your foe to die, Jumpgate is what I like to call, ""skill based."" Rather than basing your successes or failures to some mathematical formula, in JG, you win or lose based on the skills you bring with you, whether its combat, trade, or mining. It''s a LOT more fun and interactive than other sci-fi MMORPG''s such as EVE or Earth and Beyond.

Does that sufficiently answer your question?

Thanks for the answers, since i could not find PS in any retail store (here in germany) and only overprized ones at ebay i now ordered via amazon...

@Veloxi: Also thanks for the clarification. Sounds very interesting... a bit like wing commander as online-game. Why is it, that Jumgate is not tha successful? Has the game major flaws?

Actually, the game has very few flaws, and it patched regularly. If there are any flaws, it''s the lack of advertising and exposure brought to the game, which is a real shame.
