Tower defense games

EEVE TD WC3 GO NOW. GEM TD ALSO.

There's a bunch of them on Kongregate. Some are quite good - one I particularly like features sorcerers as towers. I can't remember the name.

Also on DS is Lock's Quest. It's a mix between tower defense and RPG. The demo I played at PAX seemed excellent.

Damn, I'd forgotten how annoying internet-speak is to read. I've truly been spoiled and sheltered by gamerswithjobs.

Until today.

Ninjatown for the DS is a pretty good TD game. It's a competent execution of a bunch of different well-worn TD mechanics wrapped in a charming as f*ck shell. Shameless plug incoming; I wrote a review of it here if anyone wants more info: http://nintendorks.com/index.php?ite...

(not trying to necro, just don't want to waste a new thread )

I've been playing Defense Grid for 2 or 3 weeks. Steam had it 25% off so I grabbed it. I wasn't sure about it at first, it seemed like it would only last a few levels before I got bored. I was pleasantly surprised when every level gave me something new. Not just new towers but each level taught me a new strategy. I really liked all the levels, even the ones that took me many hours to finally beat (curse you waste disposal!). Now I'm trying the challenges which are also helping me refine my strategy, such as only using 10 towers or only using level 1 towers.

I think I am just attracted to the strategy of it. You can't really change your mind or add towers on the fly, you have to plan in advance what you're going to do. If it fails, maybe you can drop a tower at the end but more than likely it's too late.

Anyone else still playing it now that it's gotten old?

Maybe I will give it a shot if it goes on sale again on steam at some point in the future.

You all should try out iDracula. I've been playing it this week, and it's not too shabby. The thread I started on it generated zero responses and I would love to compare monster slaying notes with other iphone VanHelsigs.

I can't speak for the Powers That Be With Jobs, but personally I prefer usage of an existing topic to starting yet another topic on the same subject (and yes I have inadvertently started any number of duplicate topics...trying to get better about searching first...)

Anyone else still playing it now that it's gotten old?

Haven't played it since finishing the campaign. I might get back to it, though the thought doesn't jazz me as much as trying other tower defense games I've heard about. (Some day my consoles in the box behind me will be hooked up to an actual television, at which point I can try Pixel Junk Monsters, etc...)

I played through the demo and enjoyed it, but even with 25% off I couldn't see myself plopping down $15 for something I won't get around to playing until well after it's been priced to $10 or below.

The above logic had very little to do with the quality of the game in question and stemmed more from the size of my current backlog and my current economics. This means it can be applied equally to any game that I'd consider buying for $15 these days. And yet, I've no doubt spent that kind of money recently on games that have simply gone into the pile. I blame marketing.

I find Harvest: Massive Encounter more compelling in a few ways. It's not really a Tower Defense games because you don't set up a maze, and you don't get more than a few kinds of towers. However I like the tower linking dynamic and the sandbox-ish style of play. You have to strike a balance between expansion and safety. I played through that demo as well, and at $10 I will probably end up buying it before I buy Defense Grid.

I've been playing GemCraft which is a fun little tower defense game as well. Best of all, its free.

double post

$20 was too steep for me at first, and $15 was the high end but I was sure it wouldn't be $10 anytime soon. I needed something now and it helped

If you only did the campaign you should do the challenges. Most are challenging, if challenging is always failing on the very last wave.

Haven't played that one -- how many points does it cost?

Gem craft is my new I should be listening to the client talk about their problem but instead I am killin wave 20 game

There is nothing in Harvest Massive Encounter that isn't done better in The Space Game. The latter has better UI, upgrade options and is free. Harvest ME has better graphics but neither is even remotely next gen, and either's visuals are completely functional.

In case you missed the thread about it with the link...

Really? This forum post kind of comes and goes for me, so I forget what's been discussed and what hasn't. Anyway, I brought it back up because I wanted to remind people about a neat little defense game!

Yeah, I totally missed that thread. Thanks for linking it. This is awesome, I just wish it could be made full screen.

Defense Grid is on sale on steam for 5 bucks which is a good deal for it.

I've heard it's a great Tower Defense Game.

I think that was the sweet spot I wanted it at when it first came out. Thanks for the heads up, you may want to post this in the video game deals thread as well.

I've been playing Square Enix's Crystal Defenders R-1 on WiiWare. So far (which, to be fair, isn't far at all), it doesn't have any ideas that you won't find in a free tower defense game, but it has a lot of charm and has been a lot of fun to play.

They have a demo of this game up on the PS3's Japan store (it's even in English!) but it's not available to demo or buy in the US yet, crap. I too found it rather simple, and really really fun.

I love pixeljunk monsters, and it probably pulled me headfirst into the genre. The thing I really dislike about it is that this is a game that is DYING for the ability to create user-made levels: Create, share, download, etc. But you can't, you have to stick with their levels only. Which get boring after a while. I got the expansion, but it has too many "gotcha/trick" levels, and not enough "normal" levels.

I picked up another PS3 (PS Store) one, "something Moon" (Savage Moon?). The graphics and sound were excellent, but the gameplay was meh. Too much fiddling to get the camera moving around, and not enough strategy: Just dump sh*t everywhere and upgrade it while the 3d camera rotates and spins you all over the place, except for the place you actually want to see.

I just impulse bought that. Stupid steam and their cheap games.

This may have been mentioned, but Crystal Defenders for the iPod (regular) is a good time killer.

I just bought Defense Grid for $5. I also bought Immortal Defense for $5 a month ago.

But mostly I've been playing the new gemcraft game (chapter 0), which is a lot harder than the original and looks really really long.

Arg, just when I finished the old one! Must resist urge to complete this too...

Am I alone in that I feel guilty or bad when I spend money on a trussed up flash game? Case in point, a lot of our favorite flash games like Line Rider, Fancy Pants even, have come out on DS, Wii. But when I dropped the 10 bucks on Pixel Junk Monsters, all I could think was how much Desktop Tower Defense I played, and liked more. And now there is this game, mocking me on my PS3. I remember the night I got it I sulked and thought "I should have just gone to Kongregate."

I'll second the vote for Immortal Defense for one of the more original and better TD games out there. Its a blistering vector based defense game, that has some cool tactics to employ with an epic slightly cooky alien story behind it. Part of its charm is that your 'ship' or cursor is also part of the defense, so its not just plonk stuff down and hope that you've defended properly, you can make the difference by actively seeking out choke points and concentrating your fire on that area in addition to the blasters, beacons and mine layers you've laid earlier.

Also why isn't Comet Crash out on the PSN Store in Europe!!!

The tower defense genre is bisected. There are TD games in which the player creates the path through tower placement, and there are those in which the path is already defined. I tend to prefer the latter.

I second the suggestions for GemCraft and Pixeljunk Monsters. On the iPhone, I really like geoDefense. I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned Plants vs. Zombies in this thread which is still $10 (It's $20 from PopCap.) on Steam.
