What are some of the more credible arguments against fatalism out there?

All the random stuff that happens constantly at the subatomic level?

Start smacking the other person about the head while yelling "I want to stop hitting you, but my actions were predetermined!"

There aren't any. You can't win.

That. There is the notion of "mechanism," which is the assumption that everything that happens in the universe can be boiled down to simple physical motions and that these motions follow a strict set of rules. I'm not anywhere close to being a physicist, so I don't have the first clues on what all those "random things happening at the subatomic levels" mean. Fatalism relies on the assumption that mechanism is true, so if it is established that the subatomic happenings are truly random, fatalism is false.

That's an argument against defeatism. A fatalist will counter that both the smacking and the yelling were bound to happen as a result of causality. Your reception and subsequent interpretation of the problem, followed by the decision to act as a result of the interpretation, all follow a clear set of rules that dictate the connection between causes and effects. I guess in the end this is going to go into an argument about free will.

So yeah, free will and freaky subatomic physics.

Fatalists are as bad as Nihilists.
Say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.

Why don't radio stations play music in the mornings anymore?

Why do people still turn on the radio for music?

No, it's been "Lebowski'd". Which is 100% more awesome.

I have to do that for people who take a week to answer emails. If I wanted it to move as slowly as the files on your desk, I'd send you a printed memo.

I see this all the time with the office staff where I work, some of them have over 100 unread emails in their inbox alone. If they don't know to expect the mail, they won't see it.

Fixed for accuracy.

I think it's for commercials. Generally bad ones. And DJs to ramble and make unfunny jokes.

Back in the '90s, I would listen to the radio to brush up on classic rock. You know, for a sort of independent rock history study. By the time I got to college, the radio was worthless to me.

Incidentally, I'm still stuck on punk and ska from the late '90s.

Oh god, how did I miss that reference? I saw the movie three times

If there was an Internet posting license, it would have to be revoked now. A quick trip to youtube.com taught me there's no such thing. I'll just hang my head in shame instead...

The explosion of independent CD (and now digital) distribution, combined with the drop in cost of recording to nearly zero, combined with the ability to use the Internet to reach an audience, has led actual musicians with real talent to pursue their music independently rather than make the massive compromises required to get a large label behind you.

As a result, fewer and fewer talented artists are reaching the main labels, who have been more than happy to further fill their catalogues with manufactured garbage.

Going to the radio in search of music is like going to the sewer in search of drinking water.

It doesn't help that ClearChannel has a main rotation of only 12-17 songs, and most others (ABC radio, etc.) have followed suit. It's gotten to the point where you can actually hear the same song twice in a single hour.

Of course, here in label land, we still derive much of our data from radio airplay, even though the vast majority of the music-buying public no longer listens to the medium. Guess why the plans based on these data never work?

Man I'm glad my wife didn't come to that conclusion. Nope, not hickeys. No idea what they are.
