The demo should be out today for the PS3 and Xbox 360. I had a chance to play it a bit last night and it seems to draw some definite inspiration from Mercenaries. Destructibility in general seems more granular with the ability to pound through building walls, but I'm not sure how far it extends beyond tearing buildings apart. Looks like it could be a fun romp.

Every instinct I have says this will be a disappointment.

Yet Red Faction setting + Mercs Gameplay + Volition = purchase.

Jerks.

I can say that the first time I used the hammer to crank a dude in the head and took out the wall beside him in the same swing felt pretty good. But it was late and I was tired, so I'll need to play with fresh eyes today. Maybe it will sound better too, because I swear it came across kind of tinny and flat last night.

Game Trailers has a nice preview up.

I have the same nagging feeling, but for some reason I cannot explain, I am keeping an eye on this one.

After Saints Row 1 & 2, every instinct I have says this will be awesome, and the buzz I've heard from people with the pre-order demo access has been uniformly positive. I'm really looking forward to it.

That's what I thought when I first heard of the game (before Saint's Row 2 came out), but I've been won over. Plenty of media out there that looks great, wonderful feed back from people who have played the demo, and of course the awesome fun that was Saint's Row 2. This is the most attractive thing in the near horizon for me.

I just hope the PC version works out well, since that is what I'll be playing. Reactor Zero is handling the port (not the people who ported Saint's Row 2), but they are too unknown for me to make any guesses.

I played through the demo (Qore access) awhile back. It certainly seemed interesting, the destruction aspect was really cool. Wasn't expecting the Mercenaries vibe and while it worked it seemed like the demo had a never-ending stream of bad guys which was irritating. I did have fun putting explosives on the bridge and then blowing it up as I drew guys across it, though!

Right now it seems like it could be a solid rental. I'm curious to see if there's much variety in missions or strong narrative.

Yeah, this was completely off the radar to me, especially since there's an onslaught of more intriguing sandbox games like Infamous arriving around the same time, but the video last week of the Giant Bomb guys playing the demo has me intrigued.

I read an article that said they needed to give the level designers basic training in structural engineering because their buildings kept falling over. Awesome.

I'm automatically hesitant regarding any game with a semicolon inserted between generic words.

Ahhh!!! Stop making me want to get this game!

As to the points above, it is because Volition did Saint's Row that makes me think it will work. I enjoyed both Red Faction and Red Faction II, but they were really just mediocre shooters when you get down to brass tacks. So the track record is not great, but I remain hopeful.

That's a full colon!

And since Red Faction is a franchise, it's acceptable.

It looks like Volition learned a lot in the interim, and I'm really happy to see Red Faction getting a revisit. Overall, I'm pretty optimistic. Red Faction was actually not bad. It just wasn't _quite_ there. (But, it introduced a lot of concepts that got the crap polished out of them later.)

I'm gonna be _PISSED_ if the PC port is sh*t though. Saints Row is acceptable on a console. But a full shooter, that's definite PC territory for me. I just hope they don't screw up the port.

Interesting to note that the PC version is listed on Gamestop for $39.99 and the console versions a full $59.99.

Arg...getting my colon's mixed up again.
And Red Faction is a franchise?
Totally missed the boat on that.

The first Red Faction was one of the first (if not the very first) FPS games on the PS2. It came out for PC and Mac as well, but I think Red Faction made a bigger splash in the console space and is mostly remembered as a console franchise.

Had a quick shot on this last night, and it didn't suck. Although the hammer you have is ludicrously overpowered. You can literally beat down three foot thick concrete walls with it in a couple of strikes. Explosives were fun to use and the cover system works well.

I'll have to have another longer go before I make a buy decision though, but this looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Did you notice the release delay for the PC version? Gamestop and Amazon list 360/ps3 version for June 2nd(GS) /9th(Amzn), PC for August 25th(both). Maybe the discount is for waiting patiently so long?

I didnt realize this was by Volition. SR2 is an alltime favorite, so even with money being tighter this will be a temptation. Best try out the demo.

I played through it a few times. One of the first things I did was knock down a light pole, which fell on my head and nearly killed me. Oops.

It wasn't till my 5th time that I even saw the robot thing and it wasn't till the 6th that I got into it. Not because I suck, but because I kept stopping to completely demolish every building I found (and therefore ran out of time) and/or learn hard lessons.

Lesson: Do not strike an ammo box with your hammer.

I did have a TON of fun playing with the physics. Plowing through a building in an APC = awesome. Some of the breaking effects aren't as good as I'd hope; there are never any resilient bits of metal springing back into place and walls tends to "crack" in extremely clean lines. I also didn't notice any craters in the TERRAIN, which is what made Red Faction famous (you could kind of cut your own tunnels through levels if you wanted to). Going to town on that first building with my hammer was a lot of fun regardless.

Given the amount of physics calculations it needs to be doing it runs remarkably smooth and looks very good. The character models aren't great but they are a huge step up from Saint's Row 2 (really it looks like Red Faction and SR2 are from two different generations).

There were some touches that reminded me a lot of Saint's Row 2. You can stick a satchel bomb to an enemy and they'll run around flailing till you blow it up, for instance. Also more subtle things, like the way you ragdoll when you fall and the mission design (pick up X, bring it to Y, defend Z in a rail-shooter sequence).

I can see a lot of depth in this game. During the little "teaser" at the end it looks like the demo mission is one of a great many, and just running through the mission I got a real sense of the options it'll offer. The EDF guards didn't shoot at me till I started breaking things, for instance, and the salvage/upgrade system could be interesting. I hope you can get better armor at some point because I was taking damage pretty quickly.

So, color me very impressed. I wish there was a PC demo so I could see how it runs on my PC.

I'm pretty intrigued by this game. I've really been looking forward to a game that enabled full scale physics driven destruction.

But, it kind of feels like the gameworld is built out of glass and tinfoil. Meanwhile, the landscapes are still diamond hard. I kind of wish there were some more differentiation.

I'm pretty interested in the game. The tech is really nifty. But I think that the destructibility mechanics could use some refinement. I suspect that the implementation of the destructibility mechanics is heavily limited by available processing power. I hope the PC version allows for a more fine-grained and precise physics simulation.

As for the gameplay, it reminds me more of Far Cry 2 than Mercenaries.

Every time I hear "Red Faction" I STILL to this day can't help but think "Why isn't it Descent 4?"

If it does you'll probably need one of those goofy physics cards.

The demo is amazing fun. I really wasn't expecting the destruction to be this viscerally satisfying. Gunplay seemed just about right too. Definitely sold on it and will be purchasing.

Just played the demo, and it has me pretty excited to try out the final version.

And then there's this video that shows off some of the interesting weapons not available in the demo.

That's a great video. Also notice that all the guy's guns have infinite ammo. That sounds like a fun little cheat.

I also like how he says the singularity bomb doesn't let sound or light escape... then it makes a big swirly flash and a big boom.

I'm going to get this, but I'm still torn between PC and 360 version. I wish there was a PC demo so I could see how it runs.

How?

I like the free-form gameplay, but the enemies are really annoying. The first enemy doesn't seem to mind my presence so long as I don't harass him. This led me to think I could lay low and scope things out, but any other enemy flips out no matter what. Another thing I don't understand is why my ammo count is right on the cursor. That's kind of important interface real estate to be covering it up.

It was really cool when an enemy took cover behind a wall, so I smashed right through it into him.

The weapons demo sold me.

Any word on multiplayer?

Edit: After looking it up there seems to be local multiplayer. Combined with the destruction you can do this seems like an amazing game to sit around and play with friends.

I had a good play of this over the weekend, completing the demo a couple of times. It is very entertaining, although it struggled graphically a few times when I walked my big-ass robot through buildings and such - it seemed like there was too much going on for it all to render properly. I'd imagine this might just be a side-effect of a relatively small download trying to work off the 360 hard-drive.

The destruction mechanics feel really meaty and fun, and the world looks like it's going to be sort of open. Put me in a box and mark it 'interested'.

I would totally buy Red Faction; Guerilla.

Most of the weapons have this backstory of being repurposed mining-tools.

Yet the one thing that they can't affect is the terrain.

"It's like rain on your wedding day ..

I was a dork and started a demo thread last night (I unsuccesfully searched for a 'Red Faction: Guerrilla' topic, honest!). Anyway here's my thoughts:

So I just gave the Red Faction demo (360) a whirl and damn, was I impressed. I wasn't even following this game or anything, but simply grabbed the demo on a whim.

It's open-world destruction game design, reminding me of titles like Mercenaries and Hulk: Ultimate Destruction...only on Mars...and more destructible...with great attitude and grit. Oh yeah, I also got a distinct flair of N64's 'Blast Corps' when driving the vehicles through buildings. While it may sound tired on paper, Red Faction seems to be bringing quite a bit of unique individuality to the table.

First off, EVERYTHING is destructible. I know this was an unrealized goal in previous Red Faction titles, but it looks like technology has finally caught up with the vision. It's a very satisfying destructibility too. Objects and structures dissinigrate in pieces, bit by bit. So you're not just lobbing a missile into a a building and seeing a complete destruction animation, you have to take these things apart bit by bit. You start out with a machine gun, sledge hammer and C4-type explosive satchel, which means you can bust stuff up with your own muscle or opt for explosives to do the job. You get scored for this and it seems to up your moral rating with the civies and it also leaves behind collectible "gears" that go toward weapon upgrades.

The combat is quite visceral and satisfying with just the right feeling of "punch" with weapons and explosions, thanks to great rumble implementation. The graphics are good, but not Gears of War great. The explosions are pretty damn phenomenal though. The game doesn't seem to have a Gears, Killzone 2, FF XIII, budget (the opening cinema was kind of cheesy)...yet it seems to make up for it in fun, attitude and execution.

The demo is timed, so you have 10 minutes to complete your objective. It's open-ended so you can finish it any way you like (along with side objectives along the way). I played it several times and have found multiple points of entry to the target and several completion techniques. The final end sequence to the mission was simply a blast and it leveraged great action with fun NPC commentary that seems to have just the right amount of bravado without spilling over into outrageous sophomoric/steroid pap as found in Army of Two, Killzone 2, etc. Great soundtrack music too.

At the end of the demo it goes into a splash "sell" screen saying that was only a single mission (as the map pans out) of over 120...so it appears as though the campaign will have long legs. That's a bonus 'cause I'm not a big multiplayer guy.

Color me impressed!
