Perhaps he doesn't owe me jack but, y'know at this point? I don't really owe him my continued readership either. I was already on the fence when we had a whole book without half the main characters (and most of those I actually cared about), if it isn't out some time this year I'll probably pick up the rest of the books in 2018 or so; they'll read just as well, be cheap to get at a secondhand store, and actually be done if he doesn't kick the bucket first. Meanwhile I'll buy the books of authors who seem to give a crap about me as a fan and a customer and actually put out books on a semi-regular schedule.

Well to his defense on Feast of Crows, it only has half the characters because it was once part of a single book that was separated into two books once GRRM realized the book was just too long. Can you imagine if he was working on a 2000+ page book all this time since the release of A Storm of Swords? Damn thing would be in the works since 2000. Eight years to wait for a book would have been completely insane instead of simply unreasonable as it is now waiting a mere three years since 2005.

I certainly complain that it's taking too long because my patience has kind of worn thin a bit. However I bet A Dance of Dragons doesn't come out till 2009. The next book after that will probably be at least four years after that one which will be around 2013. That means the last and 7th book in the series would be out in 2017 or 2018 as you said.

Actually, Amazon now notes the release date for Dance to be April 30, 2013. What irritates me is that when he released Feast, he implied that Dance would follow very shortly behind, perhaps only by 6 months - it's now been 3 years. How long can it possibly take to 'tweak' a few chapters? They way he talks about it, he's basically started the book from scratch! I know I'll love the book when it is finally released, but I'm with bnpederson on this one... I'm losing my desire to wait. Martin is one of the most brilliant authors of our time, but my respect is waning.

I just hope Martin realizes that at sixty, he's not young anymore. Mortality is probably not as big a threat as the mental atrophy he will begin to experience 5-6 years from now. He will gradually lose focus and short term memory until he is no longer capable of writing. In the least severe case, his progress will slow. If he knows this already and still chooses to live his life the way it is, too bad for the fans, but that is his right. If not, I'd just like him to be aware of this possibility.

I'm so torn between the rabid fanboy within me and my respect for GRRM and his right to a good life. This is a very unique kind of torture for his fans, I guess.

the thing is instead of the freaking huge books he puts out every couple of years, he could probably do a smaller half sized version every year or two (and charge full price) and still sell them really well, plus keep most of the fans happy (and his publisher ecstatic)

That's odd, it displays as April 7, 2008 for me, and they don't know when it's going to be back in stock.

I've seen both (here's the 2013 link)...
I was excited when I got the note from Amazon that pre-orders were starting, and they were initially quoting Oct. or Nov. release (I think this was back in April)...

I've read a lot of his other material in the meantime, and can't wait til he gets out the rest of this series. After reading Dreamsongs I & II, it really looks to me like he continues to release better and better work through time, so I'm hoping there will be some payoff here.

Ok so, this is GRRM we are talking about here; What better way to give a big F'U to everyone (the way he does with his characters) than to leave the series incomplete. I think he is doing it on purpose, just to piss us all off.

I'll be he's writing a last book to be released posthumously. In the last chapter we see Cersei plunging a dagger into Tyrian's throat as she accepts Jon's oath of submission and loyalty. Dany gets eaten by her dragon. The end.

That was pretty funny, man. I chuckled.

In the last chapter we see Cersei plunging a dagger into Tyrian's throat as she accepts Jon's oath of submission and loyalty.

And whom she marries because Jon is really her son and hot male relatives are the best kinds of relatives. Jamie becomes insane with jealous rage and swears off women forever, joining the Watch because it's a total sausage fest on the Wall.

Heh, this is starting to sound like a crazy fanfiction substitute for the end of the series.

We may be reduced to that.

Pilot has been given the Green Light.

Variety

HBO has greenlit production on the pilot for a fantasy drama series, "Game of Thrones," based on a book series by George R.R. Martin.

Pilot for the long-gestating project was penned by feature scribes David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Former HBO entertainment prexy Carolyn Strauss will serve as a co-exec producer, along with Guymon Cassidy, Vincent Gerardis and author Martin.

HBO acquired the TV adaptation rights to Martin's "Songs of Ice and Fire" book series nearly two years ago (Daily Variety, Jan. 17, 2007). Pilot for the HBO skein is described as an exploration of "an epic struggle for power set in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom."

Benioff's recent credits include penning the screenplay for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Weiss recently sold bounty hunter thriller "Kashmir" to Relativity Media and is writing a prequel to Will Smith's "I Am Legend" for Warner Bros.

"Game of Thrones" is among nearly a dozen pilots in contention for series greenlights as HBO aims to significantly boost the volume of original series on its sked over the next two years.

Fantastic news.

Not really Fire and Ice news, but since it came up earlier in the thread regarding HBO looking at making The Preacher along with this, figured I'd mention it. HBO has since dropped The Preacher. It's looking now like it's going to be a studio film instead.

Please baby Jesus send your daddy to force George RR Martin to finish his god damned %@%@*(@
'n series before he sets out on a TV venture. Baby Jesus, please, let Robert Jordan out of hell a while so he can talk to the big fat headed genius man and talk him into concluding the book series already.

Casting begun?

I have a friend who works at HBO. While he said he has not heard anything concrete, he said he shared an elevator ride with Peter Dinklage last week. He followed up with a couple people and it seems that Mr. Dinklage will most likely be our Tyrion! Great casting, in my opinion.

Call me Sir Bounteous Follywit.

Is it just wishful thinking?

Hmm.. very interesting choice if true. Not quite how I pictured Tyrion, but he's a pretty good actor and I can picture him in the part. Figured they go with someone older but they can probably do that with makeup.

Though every time I see him I always grin because the first thing I think of is "He's an angry elf!" and then him charging across a conference room table.

It's really strange when you predict something and it actually comes true. A coworker and I were talking about the series last year some time and we were discussing who would be a good choice to play Tyrion. We both agreed that the 'angry little elf' would be the best choice. Weird...

I've been taken with the idea of Michael J. Anderson playing that part since I saw him in Mulholland Dr. and Carnivàle. He's a good actor, and he's the closest actor I've found to the Tyrion I picture when I read the books. Michael J. Anderson also seems to be Hollywood's go-to little person for weird parts; he was also in Twin Peaks if I remember correctly.

I haven't seen Peter Dinklage in anything, though, so maybe he's an inspired choice.

Actually, I'm right there with you. I always pictured him in the role as I'm reading the books (halfway through the 3rd one now). I even almost mentioned him in my post, especially considering the awkward walk Tyrion is described as having. The only thing I'm not sure of is if he could pass off as charming and educated, yet evil and scheming. I'm kind of torn between the 2 but since hopefully this will be a series that will last many years I think Dinklage may be the better choice.

Check out the clip I linked in the post above. Even though it's a silly scene, picture the angry Dinklage in makeup as Tyrion giving one of his speeches when he's pissed off at someone.

Dinklage is pretty great, actually. If only he had been in more of Elf, it might have been bearable.

Song of Ice and Fire has started filming.

At last it can be told.

The news has finally been made public, so I'm finally free to whoop and holler and share the great news -- the HBO pilot of A GAME OF THRONES will start filming in October, in Northern Ireland. The announcement was made in Belfast. Here you go:

http://www.northernireland.gov.uk/ne...

Yes, I'm thrilled. Ireland should be a great place to film. And the facility we'll be using, the Paint Hall, is amazing as well:

http://www.northernirelandscreen.co....

Before it was a film studio, the Paint Hall was part of Belfast's famous Harland & Wolff Shipyards, where the TITANIC and many other ships were constructed. The facility is pretty titanic as well. Of course, all of us connected with A GAME OF THRONES are hoping we'll fare somewhat better on our own maiden voyage.

Yes, Parris and I will be going over to Ireland this fall to see at least part of the filming. Not for the whole shoot, alas, I don't have time for that... but we have to be there for at least part of it. Maybe we'll see some of you in a Belfast pub.

There's lots of other exciting news on the pilot as well, but nothing I can share. Sorry, lips are sealed. You'll have to wait for Mr. Benioff and Mr. Weiss... and HBO.

Cool!

Still haven't read the series. Guess I should start now.

Wow. It's actually happening.

I just want the next book.

Well. That's it. Time to start looking at prices for HBO.

Dammit.

Oh... and finish Dance with Dragons, you crazy bastard!

Well, I guess I'm starting the series again... been too long since I read it for me to continue where I stopped.

I want to support this, I want it to happen. I just don't want to get cable. Damn.

I WILL RENT THIS ON BLURAY IMMEDIATELY UPON RELEASE! My dedication knows no bounds.
