Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP)

Pages

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (wow, that's a mouthful) is scheduled to come out in late June and Gamestop is listing it at $30. This is a US localization of Monster Hunter Freedom 2G, which was Monster Hunter Freedom 2 with some added monsters and items and the like.

I love the hell out of some Monster Hunter Freedom 2 so I'll definitely be picking this up, and if anyone wants to play multiplayer I'm already set up for XLink Kai (the game only does local wireless multiplayer but with a USB wireless ethernet adapter with "promiscious mode" and the right software you can play over the internet). Word has it you'll be able to import your old MHF2 save game without losing anything, which is good news for me since I played that game for many, many hours to get the super special fancy equipment, including some you could only get by playing with someone with the Japanese version.

Anyone else interested?

Nah, I'm waiting for MH3 on Wii. I don't really like the series on PSP.

(Plus my PSP was broken while I was overseas, and if I get back cash from the insurance I'm not buying a new one)

Wait, they're bringing it over to the States, but they're dropping the online multiplayer integration?

Pass.

I've barely scratched the surface of MHF2 (which is, indeed, an incredible game), so without adding in official online MP support, there's no reason for me to pick up Unite. If I want to go online I'll just invest in an XLink Kai thingie for MHF2 instead.

I was really looking forward to official in-game online MP support.

I was assuming since it wasn't in MHF2 it wouldn't be in MHFU. If you've heard there is going to be multiplayer integration, I'd trust that.

EDIT: Internet says there is not true online multiplayer, but you can use a PS3 to create an "online ad-hoc" network, which is what XLink does.

Bah. That sucks. I thought I'd read that 2G supported online multiplayer through the PSP's internet access in Japan, and thus it would do the same here.

That's all I want, Capcom! Just give me a Monster Hunter title with integrated online that doesn't require me to use another console or networking hijinks!

Well, it seems like it does as long as you have a PS3.

And they are giving you a Monster Hunter title with integrated online and doesn't require you to use a second console or networking hijinks. It's just coming out on the Wii.

The PS3 thing is officially supported? Can we import the screen onto PS3 and use Dualshock 3 too? If so, that'd be sweet.

What about bringing saves/games over from MHF2?

I picked up MHF2 last month but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Jeanne D'Arc and now Fallout 3 have taken all my free gaming time. Really looking forward to it, though.

On my last business trip, I finally took down Khezu after, I dunno, a couple dozen tries? Maybe 6 hours playtime?

I've never felt more triumphant on an airplane.

I actually the put the game down for a while because I just wasn't ready to top that. I'm starting to pick it back up again and really looking forward to MHF Unite.

Word has it you can import your saves intact. No converting high-end gear to money as it did between MHF1 and 2.

I get upskirts but I don't understand monster hunter. If I'm ever going to figure out what makes those Japanese tick, I better give this a try.

This comes out in TWO DAYS. Get your damn swords ready. Wake the children fetch your gear. Have the little woman prepare the fire. It almost time to hunt down beast of all types. This ain't no pokemon. We aren't going to put the monster in little balls. Oh no we are going to cut them into little pieces and make boots out of them. We will fry them up and eat them for breakfast. Dragon stew anyone?

Ahem. Who also owns a PS3?

Not me, hence I'll be sticking with MHF2 which still has more replay value left for me than I'll ever squeeze out of it. If only this one had online play through the nigh-useless PSP wireless internet connectivity...

I'll be waiting for MH3 instead.

It does, if you get a promiscuous (wooo!) WiFi adapter and XLink Kai. Which I have. If anyone wants to play through Kai, let me know.

Yeah, but if I want to do that, I can do it with MHF2.

Well, got a wifimax yesterday and failed the connection attempt with Lobster (Wasn't that fun?). However, I had a few successful hunting sessions with some strangers and had an absolute blast.

You got it working, Thirteenth? Did you see where we were going wrong, or is it totally on my end?

I would suggest that you try out playing with other people first. If you can play with others, then the problem is definitely the connection between the two of us.

So far I just completed 1 training mission and failed one training mission. I couldn't find the beast my trainer wanted me to cut up. It kind of fells like a mini MMO without random people also doing qwest or maybe like the hunting mod for morrowind or oblivion. I'm off to kill more animals and eat their hearts. That's some good eatins.

I want to be all over Monster Hunter. The concept is infinitely intriguing for me. The problem is the unnecessarily clunky controls and punishing difficulty level. The very long loading times don't help, either. I don't know. It seems like a chore to get into, I'm always pumped when I think about it, and every time I load it up I get overwhelmed and just turn it off.

Have you tried different weapon types? I used to beat myself over the head trying to use melee weapons and found th elack of any kind of lock on controls frustrating as hell. Then one day I switched to bows on a whim and it all sort of clicked for me. Might be worth a shot.

That said, I haven't picked up this iteration of the game, as I never got anywhere close to completing MH2F. MH vets, am I doing myself a disservice?

I put in about 300 hours into Monster Hunter Freedom. I never got 2 just for that reason. Maybe this is the one I'll pick up.

Got my copy today and chopped up a Giadrome to make sure I still had the touch. I'm a bit rusty but I'll get back into the swing of it. Cut the Giadrome to ribbons, of course.

And honestly, I like the idea of little sidekicks you can train and bring along, but did they HAVE to be the goddamn cats, and do they HAVE to meow the ENTIRE GODDAMN HUNT?

After two failed attempts at bringing myself to understand the MH franchise, I finally bit the bullet and bought myself an Xlink Kai USB Wifi thingamajig (~$25) along with Freedom Unite. What struggle I've gone through to get Xlink Kai up and working, I will not get into. The reward for going through all the hassles is that I now understand why MH has such a draw on the Japanese players.

Monster Hunter : Japan :: Diablo : The West. That's about the gist of it.

MH is all about the monsters, the gears, and the hunt. It reserves most of its game data for the long list of items in all three categories, foregoing the fat that is any meaningful story or expansive dungeons. Not unlike Diablo 2, the MH experience is a near endless cycle alternating between gear acquisition and hunting. As players proceed through the cycles, their achievements are made relevant and further enhanced by the presence of a community. Imagine Diablo II on the PSP with Ad Hoc and Infrastructure. This thing can ruin lives.

That understanding explains just how severe a mistake Capcom made when they decided to forgo Infrastructure capability for the western releases. Without practical access to multiplayer, players are denied the essential gameplay elements that make MH what it is in Japan. Players who resort to single player will discover that thanks to the clumsy handling of the hunters, single player in MH is an infinitely more frustrating experience compared to the Diablo II equivalent. The game needs multiplayer.

Hope that clarifies the issue for those of you who are still on the fence.

You want mine, before I turn him into a helmet?

I love this game. I don't know why, but I love it. Haven't played the hell out of a game for a long time.

Something about hunting monsters just grabs me (I would never go real hunting); I love this game.

I can't stop playing. I even play at work. I'm gaming at my job.

Get XLink Kai and the Wifi thingie and I'll hunt with you online some time. Not while I'm at work.
