My New Computer

I know this is flame fodder to drop a news bomb like this here, but I bought myself a Macintosh this weekend. I picked up the 12" PowerBook that Yao is flaunting on those commercials. For me it's a homecoming six or seven years in the making. I grew up on Apples and Macs. However, my Quadra 605 died in 1997 or so and I haven't owned one since. I started using PCs at work in 1998. I still do. But I've always had a crush on Apple.

I won't bother explaining why I wanted a Mac over something else. Computer platform choice is all about personal preference. Much like you can't rely on pure price/performance data to choose your console, you need to connect with your OS on a very personal level. Now that the Mac OS is built over a BSD Unix core, I feel very very comfortable when I log into my laptop.

I still have my workhorse PC desktop and plan to use it for most of my multimedia work while I'll use my Mac for Internet stuff and writing. That feels all backwards from the last time I owned a Mac, but hooking all my graphics peripherals (digital camera, scanner, tablet) into my portable seems counterintuitive. Any other Mac users in here?

Am I the only one here who hears the crickets?

I hope it works out for you man.

Just think now you can play all those new games like Doom!
Sorry I couldn''t pass up the chance.

the office I work in is mainly mac users (as most papers are), it''s about 90% macs 10% PC''s.

I don''t mind macs at all, but I prefer PC''s: OSX with virtual PC works reasonably well for those wanting to use both and macs are definately more user freindly, especially for those new to computing.

Still here in the UK games for the macs are rare and hard to get, so even my mac zealot co-worker has a PC for the office LAN sessions.

To each their own but I love my boring beige PC!

Oh yeah. That was my other big news announcement. I won''t be playing games anymore. I''m far too important and classy now with my new Mac to be meddling with that stupid kid stuff. Tune in every Friday when I post a comic showing how games are stupid and for kids. Evidently this is what happens when I turn 29. Of course, with all of the hours I spend in front of my computer, this is probably just a midlife crisis.

Yeah this happened to me too last time my yearly office upgrade PC arrived:

yes I really REALLY won''t use this for playing games with..Honest, I''ll just use this 2.5Ghz monster to run word on...ooh whats this a GeForce 4 Ti card onboard...Hmm I''ll just fire up UT2003....Just to test it you understand....

(4 hrs later)

What...fix your mac now...I can''t...er, cuz, er... I''m stress testing my PC''s components...Very important that... (hehe that''s good must remember that one for next time)...

as you can see it passed VERY quickly (damn games, ruining my productivity!)

Sway I know how you feel... those G4 PowerBooks are sure nice! That is why I could not resist buying my self a 15"". Dang $3G but sure worth the price. I using it in the office every day, the only place I can leach off from 1G network and T1!
Than again I use my Mac most of the time now!

I actually have nothing against Macs. I''d like to play around with OS X, but I just can''t get past paying large sums of money for hardware that''s really not all that good.

I''ve always liked Mac laptops. Very slick units and it''s not like you''d want to game on a laptop anyways. That said, I hope you bought it because you need to work on the go, not just so it will sit on your office desk like a normal office machine

You know, you could have spent a little of that cash on a few PC upgrades so you could run games a little better. Or you could have sent some money my way, I like money.

Oh, I''ve never had anything against macs. I just developed a hate for Mac-users who constantly badger me about gettin'' one. Seriously, it''s like a cult or something.

Anyway, their only problem is lack of games, but that may be fixed in the future.
It''s not like I hold any allegiance to Bill Gates. I''d get rid of Windows in a second if it meant I could play the same games on another system.

It is a cult, Mex. The really overboard ones flock to MacWorld every years to here a reading from the Book of Jobs. Ironically, this year he actually came up with something that worked.

From a business standpoint, I mean.

I know i''m nuts... I didn''t buy my MAC to work! I just bought it to watch my DVD during my lunch!

Though it pains me to say it, the Apple DVD viewing software is way better than anything by Windows.

Then there''s Final Cut Pro and how the Pentium 4 wasn''t optimized for video work, but that''s another story.

Tell that to Newtek. The Video Toaster 2 is mostly software with a little interface card for extended input/output options. They obviously think the P4 is just fine for NLE.

There is tremendous positive buzz surrounding Final Cut Pro. Unfortunately, do to mild brainwashing of Mac users, the positive buzz should be taken with some amount of salt grain.

My doctor tells me to cut back on salt, you tell me to add more, who am I to trust?

I dont see a conflict here...

Increased salt consumption should only take place when experiencing effects of buzz of a positive Macintosh nature. Its a homeopathic cure. Most doctors wouldnt understand. Salt is an integral catalyst for contacts inner celestial harmony or ICH as its commonly referred.

Research has yet to be done on whether this effects all positive buzz and not just that of a Macintosh strain. Ill keep forum goers posted.

DAMMIT everyones getting new gear , my vrother from England just called to say he''s just ordered a top of the line 3.06ghz Alienware games PC with two TFT''s and full surround sound system! grrrr, damn my lowly IT job! must stop playing games and get promoted...or maybe not.

Don''t worry, not everyone''s getting new stuff. I''m still motoring along on the Athlon 1.3 I built a year and a half ago. My girlfriend even has a better PC then me now, since she just bought a new processor and motherboard and all that. Oh, and in case that didn''t make you feel better, I''m still using a GeForce 2 MX.

Oh, I''ve never had anything against macs. I just developed a hate for Mac-users who constantly badger me about gettin'' one. Seriously, it''s like a cult or something.

It''s not a cult, Mex - we''re just one happy family here in the Mac kingdom. Come and feel the love. Give Macs a chance, my brother. Peace be with you...

She''s a graphic designer, before you vicious bastards lay into her, so she''s got an excuse. Least that''s what I tell myself.

Don''t bother trying to change her mind either. You know, unless you like running into a brick wall. Head first. Without a helmet. After being shot from a cannon. With a migraine.

This is why we''re a good pair - we''re like bookends. Perfectly matched. Which means our son is going to be the world''s stubbornest person, folks.

Woohoo! Let''s hear it for stubborn artists and their stubborn spouses! If you want to get planetary, I''m a Taurus and the little lady is a Leo. According to every astrological document, we''re doomed. The thing is...we''re so stubborn, we''re determined to prove them all wrong.

Id just like to say that Ive never owned a Mac, and the proprietary hardware turns me off, but OSX is cooler than cool. BSD, with an OpenGL SVG based UI, that actually works and is more useable than windows, with all the latest software (i.e. office, Internet Explorer, photoshop, ect., not games ) Good support, and backwards compatible with both OS9 and X11 applications. If they made a version of OSX for x86, I dont care how much Itd cost, Id sell myself on the street corner to get me some of that.

That said, I could see myself with a Mac laptop, itd be a nice secondary machine to mess around with. Of course, I can''t really see myself with the money in hand, giving it to an Apple sales representative, without wearing some sort of bright wig with a red nose. Thank God for the anonymity of the internet.

Mex, if Im your daddy (which is probably true), I sure as hell don''t remember it. I also can''t acknowledge it in any legally binding way. However, you need to keep an eye on your liver, and possibly your colon. Believe me, it''s not supposed to feel like that.
