The Hunter: Catch All

Downloading the client and pinging folks with friend-up-isms now.

edit: My character ended up with the name "Bruce Ransom" and looks like he was a surfer in a previous life.

I just figured something out. I've always noticed that there were two types of tracks: one with a sickle/semi-circle above them, and one that kind of eminated/glowed. Well, I thought they were just signifying what type of track it was, but I found out that the glowing sphere-shaped clue is part of the trail you are currently following. The sickle-shaped clue is part of a different/new track. Maybe you all knew this already! It helps when there are like 8 tracks to follow and you're hot on the trail of a deer and need to know what to look for.

Does anyone elses heart start beating rapidly when they're close to a deer? That shouldn't be happening, but I like it. I mean, I know it plays a heart beat sound in game, but I'm talking about my real life heart beat. Funny stuff.

Hmmm ... how did you get it to run at 1900x1200? The largest resolution option it gives me is 1600x1050 or whatever even though my native resolution is 1900x1200.

Edit: The name generator does indeed rock, my name is Blake Camacho.

I wondered the same thing too. My GPU can handle over 1600x1050, but my monitor can't. 1600x1050 was the maximum option I had.

What's your Hunter gamertag?

The absolutely most brutal thing just happened to me. I spent 3 hours walking south on the island. Was a stone throw from the camp site on the west coast. Heard some deer. Followed the trail. Found a group of 4 (two male two female). One of the males was, to me at least, a record breaker. The rack on this guy was massive! All giddy, I get into position. Prone, on a slightly elevated ground. Approximately 300-400 ft distance. He's giving me a perfect pose. I line up... hold breath... I'm 10 pixels away from the perfect shot... he's walking right into it... less than a second to pull the trigger... BAM! A game screen comes up: you're tired and are retiring, do you want to go to the closest lodge or closest camp. What the... damn! Camp! I'll run and catch up to the buck and get a second chance. For sure! Click on camp option... wait a second. I recognize this place! Bring up map... yep I'm at the starting place, all the way on the other side of the island. A silent scream of rage...

Their requirements looked pretty steep, but on a 2 year old computer and Radeon 3870, I'm running at 1900x1200 with everything maxed out, except shadows, which are on medium. It runs smooth as butter.

I didn't do a damn thing. Just picked the last option in my resolution drop down. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Oh, and the rest of you guys that are posting your kills, post your scores please. That's the number on the far right of the type of the animal you killed (usually in the range of 70 to 150).

Yeah, I'm not sure what happens if you hunt too late in the day, but when you see a footstep icon flash in the lower right part of the screen, that means you're approaching the 10km milestone and you have to go to a lodge or campsite to 'rest.'

I had a 4 deer scenario earlier and used my binoculars to pick out the biggest one. The deer look to be similar in size, but the binoculars display the weight of the deer if you keep the binocs trained on it long enough.

My hunter goes by the wonderful nickname of "Bubbs" by the way.

Hi Bubbs!

Your move!

EDIT: Score: 163 2/8 <-- 2/8? Not sure if that ratio means anything or if it is a fraction of a number.

Hello, fellow hunters. Pardon me if I am a little late to this party. I just finished the download and picked a character. My mug shot looks like I should be doing time for armed robbery somewhere, but hey. I am "JudgeDigger" since "Judge" and "TheJudge" were already claimed. The name generator gave me the cool handle of "Hunter Lund". Hmm... seems appropriate. When I get some time to sink into this I hope to be back here with awesome tales of my hunting prowess but it will more likely be stories of "missed him by thaaat much".

Unfortunately, they do not display the rack score.

Got one! I tracked some deer for the longest time, then this one basically just showed up in the road. Poor lil' guy didn't see it coming.

I'm in.. still downloading the client, but should get some play this weekend. I'm really not all that thrilled about the idea of hunting, but I think I can handle the virtual kind.

Anyway, the name is "Woodrow Dick". Glad to meet ya.

-edit-
oh ya, Account is "VegaGWJ".

When Doc says 6 point buck I take it he's using eastern count(all points on antler counted) and not western count(points on one side counted).

Alright FINE!

Downloading now.

I should have been in bed 2 hours ago.

I'll be honest, I only skimmed the initial post and thought this was a game about hunting humans. I'm relieved and disappointed at the same time...

Roscoe Butts.

It feels like the name of one of Boss Hogg's henchmen on "The Dukes of Hazzard" that ends up getting into a fistfight and thrown through a plate glass window all while having no speaking lines.

I am getting ~400 KiB/s after toggling the direct download.
I was getting ~50 KiB/s before the toggle.

Yes, I believe it would be the 'eastern' count.

So what's the trump card? Rack score or weight?

Where I come from (Midwest) Rack is King.

I am really having a tough time restraining myself from typing a bad joke.

Not me.

I have always been a rack man myself but in instances where the racks are equivalent I will use weight as a tiebreaker.

Hmmph.. anyone run this under Vista 64? It downloaded, installed, crashed on first run, and now I can't find where it installed.

I run it on Vista64. No problems with max settings, except shadows on medium. Someone suggested earlier that putting shadows on medium is the solution to crashing the app.

Also, the only way to start the game, apparently, is from the website. Clicking on the executable complains that it needs a web launch.

I should also mention, my latest two kills were both without the scope. Things are a lot more interesting when you can't shoot something with a pinpoint sight from a mile away

This is one addictive game. 3 bucks down so far, the best of them was:

Score: 143 6/8

Weight: 68.2 kgs (150.4 lbs)
Tracked: --
Spotted: 81.5 m (267.4 ft)
Kill Distance: 56.9 m (186.8 ft)
Time of Harvest: 04-10-2009 12:29

Nickname is AriesGWJ

Fine I give up. I agree, as long as your talking about rack weight and not total weight.

I'm really enjoying it. I upgraded my membership today. Looking forward to some Elk hunting.

I just killed the toughest doe in history.

First shot - Head - 151 ft
Second shot - Head - 122 ft
Last shot - Head - 9 ft

I'm on Vista 64 as well and haven't had any problems with everything on max settings. Before you launch, does the option to select the graphics settings come up for you, at least? I'd try knocking everything down to min settings and then work them up until you find the cause of the crashes, assuming it's graphical.

Keep us updated on how you like it. I was planning to upgrade once I exhausted the Muley missions, but I think I might just do it anyway so I can get to the elk.
