The Hunter: Catch All

To accept a friend request, you have to go to Messages, click on the message from the person and then accept the invite. For a minute, I thought Anodyne didn't find me worthy of being his friend.

Hmmm, looks very good. Especially for a free to play game. I'll try download it when I get home.
If they included a bow hunting option I would be all over it, but this should be fun too.

I didn't come up with a creative name. I'm GlennHull in game. Nowhere near as cool as Major Dye.

Okay, downloading now. My guy's name is Damien Grimm. Sounds positively menacing.

What's your gaming handle/nickname?

Yeah, capping upload to 10kb/sec just helped my download time. It looks like you have to redownload everything when there's an update. Is it managed by the PSN?

Nickname is RobAnybody

The downloader seems to be some kind of P2P thing. It seems to go a little faster if you cap the upload rate to something reasonable. It keeps it from typing up your connection as much as well.

Winner. Go to the settings and throttle the upload, makes a big difference.

Alternatively, 'Toggle Direct Download' from the File menu and receive 800-900 KiB/s (currently getting it at 970KiB/s).

--Edit--
I have a feeling this has to do with the local ISP throttling torrents. With default settings the best speed I got was like 150 KiB/s. Since I turned on direct download, it started at 850 KiB/s and it's been steadily increasing towards the end until it passed 1MiB/s.

Is this because without the change to direct download that it's using bitorrent?

I think it's similar to Blizzard's updater for WoW (which I believe uses torrent-type sharing). With this game it's necessary, though.

I hit "Toggle Direct Download" and it's doing 500 Kib/s. Still, it seems to be going faster this way. How large is the complete download? it doesn't give me a time estimate with direct download.

Well, I went for a stroll for a solid 30 minutes and covered about 1.2 miles. I found sound deer crap and saw a really, really brief flash of a deer. It was way more exciting than it should be been.

Gorgeous engine and great sound. Considering it's free, it's worth trying just to be in the environment.

So is there any MMO-ness to this? Can I find other people wandering around in the woods? Can a friend and I go hunting together?

Downloading really slowly for me too :(

The file size is like 380MB. I have heard that they are supposed to have multiplayer/co-op sometime in the future. There are hunting competitions that you can enter and compete with other players for prizes/trophies or whatever. I don't know if there's a way to get to the big island (zoom out from your map) but it's about 50 times bigger than the island you start on. The game could be huge.

Edit: The Emote Launcher has a little option under "File" called "Toggle Direct Download". Maxing out my connection now

This would be completely awesome if you could do an MMO style multiplayer. Get vehicles and stuff like 4x4's or ATVs and just let you cruise around and hunt. Then of course you'd have the griefers running around too

There's a spot for 'Transport' in your inventory and there are roads all over the reserve. Hints? Teases? I just want a helicopter to shoot from.

You've been shot in the face by DickCheney69 for 3 points of damage.

Just signed up. Nickname is bennard.

Woohoo! It's time to waste time!

Florencio Funk is waiting for the download to complete. From the looks of it he'll be waiting for awhile at roughly 3 kps. In fact...by the time the game downloads I anticipate Florencio Funk to be so drunk off of cheap beer from a styrofoam cooler that he'll stumble 10 feet into the woods and pass out face down in the beautifully rendered foliage.

(And by the time I type this the speed goes up to 50kps and stabalizes. better drink faster!)

That's certainly a very pretty terrain engine. Gameplay would be more compelling if there were NPCs of some sort though.

So I sat in a tree stand for 30 minutes laying on the decoy call thing. Didn't see anything but trees and bugs

Woot, got my first deer

Weight: 64.5 kgs (142.2 lbs)
Tracked: 18 Minutes 21 Seconds, 0.39 km (1263.1 ft)
Spotted: 15.1 m (49.5 ft)
Kill Distance: 15.4 m (50.6 ft)
Time of Harvest: 04-08-2009 21:33

I'm wandering around aimlessly in the woods like a dumbass but I'm enjoying it. It's a very zen game and this is one of the most realistic forests I've seen in a game. Overall definately worth a download just to enjoy the atmosphere for awhile.

I always use the decoy to stop the deer from moving. They look in your direction, but they stand pretty still for a good shot.

I wouldn't mind some kind of added direction for finding game. I found a trail recently, but it ended after a few steps, which has to mean the deer was abducted by aliens, right?

Hunting tips welcome!

I'll give it a shot. Username is Hemidal, and my character is Reinaldo Rock (which might be more of a porn name than a hunting one, but...).

You can also toggle to direct download to get the client. Throttling the upload wasn't improving my download speeds.

I MUST bag a deer before I go to bed!

The forest is awesome to wander around. They did a great job with the lighting. The actual hunting is...well...I've only fired one round in an hour and that was to get a feel for the aim when I first started.

Right now I'm crouching and moving slowly pausing every 5-10 meters to look around.

I did spend some time in a blind but just sitting there grew boring quickly.

1. Whatever you do, do not run!

2. Do not run.

3. Listen for either deer calls, or your little GPS thinggie beeping. That'll give you the start of the trail. When tracking, always listen for sound. It's the most accurate way to track.

4. Do not run. Seriously. The moment you get a call, go into crouch or prone. I find prone annoying, so crouch generally does the job.

5. When you get close to where you heard the call, you'll most likely pick up the trail. In combination with the call, it'll give you a general idea of where the deer is going to. They travel pretty logically. So you shouldn't have too much trouble finding the next clue on the trail.

6. If you know you're close, try to go around where you think the deer is. Find a spot with better visibility. Preferably something higher up.

7. Using the bleet calls is effective, but takes a while. Even if the deer is just through those bushes when you called, it may take 2-3 minutes for it to actually get through the bushes to check you out. Patience is the key.

8. Stances modify accuracy as you'd expect them to.

9. If you wounded the animal, try to follow it as best as you can. In addition to normal tracks, there will also be blood tracks. Depending on how wounded it is, the animal will eventually die and you'll find it curled up behind some bush.

10. Did I mention not to run yet? I don't think I can stress that enough. When I discovered that there is a 'toggle run' key, I ran across the island for 2.5 hours, waiting to hear the call. Nothing! Not a single hint that there is a single deer on the whole island. The trick is that running is so noisy that you scare the deer that are like miles away from you.

Awesome, thanks! Tomorrow I'm making it my goal to bag a deer or two

Well that sounds like that explains my 45 minute deer-less nature hike.

It took me a while to figure this out too. Use the little hunting computer thing. When you analyze a clue with it and then go back to the map mode, you'll see a cone on the map showing the likely direction you should follow. You'll also see little sonar ping looking things on the map when there's an animal sound nearby.
