King's Bounty: The Legend Catch-All

I was wondering, what class is everybody playing? The mage bonuses looked awesome so that's the route I went, but I'm missing out on some killer units the warrior gets.

I'm playing the Paladin. I feel like I'm missing out on spells more than units. This isn't based on any sort of play testing, just my personal feelings.

There is no difference in units or spells between classes. Just how much of each you can use in battle.

I'm playing a paladin personally. Haven't had any problems with the class so far, but I'm not very far along. Still on the first quest for the king with a couple side quests under my belt.

I'm loving this game though. Probably one of the best $10s I have ever spent. I really love the blend between the RPG aspects and the classic HOMM turn-based battles. Was the original this chocked full of content?

So I'm near the end-game and I have to say its starting to drag a bit - specifically, in the Demon-lands. The RPS guy who loved it said much the same thing. Biggest problem is that I'm dealing with massive stacks of enemies, and as a mage dealing with magic-immune black dragons is a huge, huge pain.
That being said, I'm like 30 hours in, so I've got a lot of value out of it so far :)

Yeah I got the same thing, I had to cheat to beat the Elven island. So at that point I just kept cheating to go through the Demon lands. It gets kind of thin until the ending, but the ending is really fun.

I play as a warrior, because I'm a noob I'm having tons of fun, best 10 euros I've spent in ages!

When the demo came out, I played that through as a paladin. I just picked up the full game over the weekend and only had time to play through the training, but I decided to go with a paladin again. I didn't want to sacrifice magic or brute force.

This was one of those games I didn't think I'd like, but it sure does have a lot of personality and grows on you pretty quickly.

I bought this off of gamersgate, but when I installed, it says "demo version" on the side. Is that normal? It went through the online activation, or at least I thought it did...

No it shouldn't be the demo version if you bought it.

Nevermind, I am a moron. The shortcut I created was pointing to the demo I have installed. "Mystery" solved.

Ooo. Now available on Steam!

I wonder if the gamersgate version can be registered on Steam .. that would be nice.

just as a heads up for those planning on picking this up, its pretty hit or miss with a 64 bit OS. The demo crashes like crazy for me, as does the final product. And in the requirements posted on steam it does not state that 64 bit is supported. So just an fyi

Runs perfect under Win7 beta 64-bit for me, no crashes. YMMV etc.

good to know, I will try again, it was a good game

Finished the game w/ XP 64bit... never had an issue.

PAR

maybe its a 'vista' issue mainly. ah well we will see

Seems to run fine for me on 64bit Vista.

I've had random crashes on Vista 64, but it's not game breaking. Meaning, it happens enough I'm acknowledging it, but not making a fuss over it. The second time it happened I began saving more frequently (auto save is a good feature too).

Grumble. I'm crashing. A lot. Sometimes I can go an hour or two without a crash. Sometimes it happens every fifteen minutes. The crashes are *hard* crashes, requiring me to power cycle the machine to reboot. Not super happy about that. I wonder if it's only an issue with the Steam version? Internet wisdom seems to suggest that's the case.

I love the game. Just wish it was less painful to play through the crashes.

People who've had (or not had) the bad crashes: What video card? I'm running an nvidia 9800GTmumble or close. Wondering if it might be only nvidia cards, since it appears to happen to people on both XP and Vista, both 32- and 64-bit.

8800GT on Vista 64.

No crashes with nVidia 7600GT (don't laugh) and Win7 beta x64. I'm using the gamersgate version. Hopefully my no-crash luck will hold when I upgrade to RC.

Grg. I really want to play, but I really don't want to buy a copy from gamersgate when I've already bought a copy off of Steam. Bleah.

Hmm. No crashes since the steam client update that came out the other day, and I've played a lot since then. I wonder if they fixed something? Or it could just be luck. Anybody else had a similar no-crash experience since the steam client update?

I've never had it crash with the Gamersgate version, period. I run Win7 beta 64-bit.

I'm kinda burned on the game though. It's a fantastic game, but it gets kinda samey after a couple of hours. Still worth every penny though: I got it for 10 euros and played it for more than 15 hours.

I played the game for like 16 hours in one weekend and am kind of burned as well. The one problem I've noticed with it is that you'll hit points where you aren't sure where to go. Often, the game will have kind of a linear path planned for you where there's only certain places you can get to without facing hugely outnumbering armies you can't hope to beat. Usually I can find these area but now I've got like 12 missions spread across 3 areas and there's no where I can go without getting slaughtered.

You guys are doing it wrong. This is the kind of game you savour, like a fine wine. I beat it over the course of a couple of months, stopping when I was a bit fed up and going back to it later.

In my experience, whenever I faced a huge army I couldn't hope to beat, there was always SOMETHING I could do to get more XP - including going back to old territories to clear out those remaining armies I couldn't hope to beat beforehand.

Also, if you happen to be playing a mage, the opponents armies are supposed to be much larger than yours - your magic is supposed to make up for it.

Oh man. New Steam patch out, which apparently fixes the problem with people who were in the islands pre-1.7 not being able to load the game without crashing.

Unfortunately, any saved games from 1.7 (i.e. ALL OF MINE) are no longer compatible.

This rather sucks.

But it's the journey that's fun, right?

The wandering around aspect does take some getting used to. The quests seem almost incidental to the game play. Once I learned to ignore them, I started having a lot more fun. It's strange, because this game is pretty much ALL grind, and I generally don't like that sort of thing. But, the battles are so fun that I can spend hours playing and not notice.

Well... the quests are kind of important, considering that each enemy can only be killed once. You need all the sources of rewards you can get.

Anyway, yeah, I'm not too broken up over things. I'm just kind of annoyed to be starting over *again*. (I'd already restarted to try a different class to see how it felt, back in my crash-every-30-minutes phase.) Each time I know how to play a bit better, but...

Anyway, long weekend coming up. I'm sure I'll have plenty of fun with it.
