edit: I had a question that the patch notes answered so nevermind.
Looks like I'm staying up a little later than planned tonight.
But have they done anything about the "goalkeeper lumps it up to striker who beats offside trap and scores" goals?
Quite likely. It didn't happen in my games cause I play in higher leagues, where defenders aren't that stupid and my goalie isn't set to deliver long balls, so it's hard to me to tell.
Anyways, passing/ball distribution really looks better. Only bug I saw so far were few bizzare offsides.

I only had that goalkeeper->long ball->striker->goal happen once in about five matches last night and it was to my benefit. The last time I played pre-patch that method was accounting for a majority of my scoring that night.
Just started a new game with the patch applied, and the games certainly do seem a lot more polished.

I'm playing in BSN and I couldn't agree more with davet010. I watched my team create three goals in my last game.

Premiership, Mystery Club X
As Maxox said, I actually saw a forward forage to the by-line and cut the ball back, then the second forward (Ched Evans in this case - UEFA Cup qualifiers) turn his man and thump it past the keeper.

I've tried to play Arsenal when demo came out but it was so boring that I had to give it up. I'd love to play with some of my favourite players, yet, it's no fun when game is no-contest. Sure, you don't always win but challenge that it provides doesn't compare to playing mid-table team. I think I might someday tinker with database, lower stats on all Arsenal players (to simulate what we have to deal with this season) and THEN try to win Premier League.
Meanwhile, I've created world-class team with MK Dons in my second Premiership season and another league title looks real. Funny thing, highest transfer that I've made so far wasn't Marquinhos (11,5 million), Golden Boot winner last season but... Julien Faubert from West Ham (14 million). Other than that I'm getting all top players on free transfers or less than 3-4 million. Overall, my transfer spending balance during two years in top-flight is someting like -15 million, but I guess it's like that for almost every Premier League team in game. It's half of what Arsenal or City have paid for some players they they use for subs
Predo, you ever had any success in LLM?
Well, last year was five seasons of trying to win CL with Ajax, no success. 4 consecutive losses in 1/8 CL final doesn't sound good, but in fact every time I've lost, I've lost to the biggest teams. I've got a bit unlucky, cause I've beaten every big team they threw at me (Barca, Real, Manchester United, Juventus) but I lacked consistency.
FM 08 brings two most painful memories to in my FM careers:
First one is UEFA Cup final with Ajax, where I've lost to league rivals, PSV, completely dominating whole game and losing goal in 90+5 minutes after woeful offside trap and goalie error.
Second one is much worse. With Cardiff in second season, no transfer budget and expected mid-table finish I got into playoffs and had to play Wolves to get through. It went all smooth in first game, 3-1 home, outplayed them with fancy passing. I go to Wolverhampton few days later and it turns out we have to play in heavy downpour on muddy pitch. Complete madness. I go 0-1 down in first half but I seem to be in control and keep possession well. Defence works well and they can't break it down. Then, around fifteen minutes to go, Elliott finds himself at about forty-five yards from goal and tries to score from there for no apparent reason. Shot is woeful, Enckelman makes the connection really well, grabs the ball at ease. Then it falls out of his hands and into the goal.
So much for Premier League football next season.
Pred, I really like some of these challenges. I won't try it with Polish clubs cause that would be suicide, but minor Portugese/Scottish/Dutch etc. sides seem a reasonable choice. Thing with smaller leagues is, you can't really attract anyone to play in it and you won't get generated players good enough so it would be miracle to build solid team. In England it's easy if you could scout a lot and have right transfer policy, just like I did with Dons.
btw: Marking is still broken. I play when AI changes formation or makes changes you always end up with players man-marking wrong opponents. I just lost two goals cause out of gray my DL started to mark MC and my DR sticked by opposing AMR. Argh.
btw2: I've just googled FM Challenges and that's what I've got so far:
pic any big team. in that team u can only have players from 1 country. for an example if ure manchester united. then u might pick argentina. and then u can only have players from argentina in ur team.
TOTALLY, DUDE. (Where can I get some really challenges?)
EDIT: Ooh, Athletic Bilbao and their Basques-only policy might also be interesting.
I've tried the Basque only one (in FM06, I think), but had problems tracking down players with Basque as the 2nd nationality (with apologies to any Spanish GWJ'ers whose hackles may be rising at this point)...and apparently there was a real problem once you started to get regens...or didn't, as the case may be.
I must remember to have a look at Real Sociedad next time I'm setting up a game, to see whether they've managed to code in their rules of Basques and foreigners, but no Spaniards. There again, I think RS are currently in Div 2 and technically bankrupt. And to think it wasn't that many years ago that they challenged Barcelona and Real, with their strike force of Kovacevic and Nihat.
So an update to my LLM career. Was at Portstewart NI2 from the end of the 2008/09 season to the end of the 2009/10 season. 2009/10 was my first full year in charge at Portstewart and we finished 7th. I was pretty disappointed as I thought we had enough talent to challenge. Shortly after the season ended I saw something in my inbox that said AFC Telford were considering sacking their manager. I told the press I'd be interested in the job. The next day I had a job offer and that was that. What drew me away was a $20k transfer budget and an $11k wage budget.
So first season at Telford (2010/11) in the BSN ... 1st place/promotion!!!! We kind of limped to the finish, but whatever.
In the preseason I had lured my best players from Portstewart to Telford. My best 11 at the end of the 2010/11 season contained 4 Portstewart players (two DCs, my DR, and my ST [who was also deemed the worst signing]). My goal leader (worst signing ST) and assist leader (rotation AMR) were both from Portstewart.
Looking forward to not getting relegated in the BSP. I've got a good young team with an MC who just went through one hell of an attribute growth spurt. I have two of Northern Ireland's U19 starters, the Danish U21 goalkeeper, the backup Austrian U21 keeper, and a starting MC on the Pakistani national team. I think I can stay up with the lineup I have now, but I want to find an upgrade at fullback, right mid, and forward to maybe push me towards the top half of the table. The board only want me to avoid relegation. Last year they only wanted mid-table.
This thread is seriously making me want to get the new version of the game. My family is not happy about that!
So, do you guys ever manage more than one team at a time? I love building a team, but tend to get bored playing the games. The last time I played I was running five teams at once, so I could constantly be wheeling and dealing with the different squads.
I have usual done some version of the LLM thing, but also managed a big club so I could get into a national team job.
maxox wrote:What drew me away was a $20k transfer budget and an $11k wage budget.
I really cannot express how much this is my favorite part.
This in contrast to Portstewart who offered a $0 transfer budget and a $1.3k wage budget.
Anyway Cheese, I only play one team at a time, myself. Occasionally I do get bored with the LLM grind, but then I take a break or start a second, more ridiculous game, get bored even faster, and go back to the LLM.
I guess I should read the official LLM rules. Is there something in there about doing one team at a time? I am pondering starting a game with a few managers in the lowest divisions available in a few small countries. I'll probably use Frank to pick the teams. I am hoping my new computer can handle a game with a lot of leagues.
I have been dropping hints to my family to prepare them for my impending purchase.

Leaving notes and pieces of poetry about football on desk?
Well, you can call me a semi-LLM'er (had to google it first).
I play KVK Tienen in Belgian second league (+1). I could play 3rd division in Belgium, but then I wouldn't be able to relegate and come back (in theory), so I picked a relegation candidate in 2nd league.
I never look for players outside the game (+1), but I have looked for some pointers on training and tactics (-1). Not ready-made tactics or training schedules, but something to get me started as the last CM I played was CM4 02-03 (where I brought Tienen to first class, Cup Final and the 1/8th finals of the UEFA cup).
My Big Plan is to get noticed by bigger clubs after 3 seasons or so, preferably RSC Anderlecht and then Chelsea
Currently I'm leading Second League after 20 games, to my great surprise. I expected to float around the 5th place at best, but my signing of a lower league striker with high finishing and great technique has payed dividends Another perk of signing this kind of players is that they're immune against buy-outs. They're good by accident, not by talent so the scouts don't pick them up This is less handy when you're in dire need of money of course
I have one fixture to go before winter break. Looking forward to the opening of the market, so I can try again to get rid of an overpaid striker I got stuck with. And try and sign out of contract unhappy players (hooray for Bosman!).
Oh, and I'm playing FM8 too Pred. Without any player updates. It's kinda fun to go back in time a bit and start from there

Doesn't every football fan have those all over their desk?

I played CM 03-04 long after FM 2005 and 2006 came out for a similar reason. I liked to see how I would build the teams differently. And I liked to see guys end up in weird places that they didn't end up in real life.

Had to google that reference. Well worth the effort! lol

You can get a national team job being a LLaMa. Just probably not one you'd be interested in. Interestingly enough when I started my current save I think the Angola and Norway jobs were open. I started unemployed and I applied for both jobs. I was offered both of them, but I turned them down because I couldn't see the realism in some brand new American coach with zero experience jumping right into international management.
I've conceded from a corner and my goalkeeper was pretty decent (at least according to my coaches and scouts). I think I've also scored from one myself. I think the match engine produces way too many corners on goal.
I actually started my new game in Belgium too Dejanzie!
They're letting Americans coach our teams now?!
Seriously though: you're a brave and noble man Prederick, starting off in Belgian 3rd League. Luckily the geriatric mismanagement from the Belgian FA (the KBVB) isn't reflected in-game, saving us both a lot of frustration
I'm having the same problem: great strikers (one bought, the other was already lent from Antwerp when I started), but lousy defense. I just bought me an extra defender/defensive midfielder to be able to rotate (I was too injury-sensitive) and one good defensive midfielder. The money I spent on him is compensated by an average midfielder I sold and the release of a sucky striker that somehow had a wage five times the average.
I'll be glad when all those contracts I got burdened with are renegotiated
It's been a while since I've been able to discuss my CM/FM shenanigans with anyone. It's fun!

Feel free to drop me a line if you see me on Steam, I'm usually around and happy to chat about my useless CB's and how I can never get Creative Freedom/Free Roles to work right.
Well, they aren't supposed to work in lower leagues. What CF settings do you use?
As for 'hands-on' football... well, it's early spring here in Poland so I'm playing it outdoors instead of wasting my time on PES
Don't fret Prederick, I account my "success" to pure luck with a bit of transfer skill
The last three games my team has been sucking balls, and I haven't the slightest clue why. At least I keep grabbing some draws, while hopefully the form turns around.
FM is pure mathematics, as it is a computer game, so there's something to the "puzzle" theory. But I'm guessing there are so many parameters and variables it's an impossible one to truly solve.
