So, Syria's next...

Looks like we are pressing for sanctions in Syria.

About time! We haven''t been to war for...at least 2 weeks now!

One really wonders if this is a recent development or hasn''t been in the cards for all along.

sanctions != war.

Can you tell me why Syria shouldn''t have sanctions?

Is Syria remotely connected to 9-11? That''s how the administration sold Iraq to the American people.

.
Syria sponsors terrorists. Syria has a horrible human rights record. Syria isn''t a Democracy. Syria is occupying Lebanon. This is a global war on terror, the states that sponsor them and the splinter cells.

So no, eh?

They are connected to terrorist groups that are connected to Al Queda. If you''re just going to play an eye for an eye with the terror groups and the states that help them, we''re going to have a lot more 9/11s.

So, do you think we should go to war with Syria and topple their regime? How about Iran? Saudi Arabia? Egypt? Libya? Sudan? Yemen? Colombia? Malaysia? Indonesia?

I''m just trying to find the bottom of this slippery slope.

Sanctions? Oh man! Yeah! That has worked so well in the past!

No. Sanctions != war. We have sanctions on Cuba.

If we show any weakness to any of the nations around Iraq they will cause problems with the new government. We have to show resolve and that nothing will be taken. That doesn''t mean war.

We had sanctions on Iraq and apparently that didn''t work for some people.

I don''t think we should rush to war with every nation. Iraq lost a war and broke a cease fire.

Neither do I, but the wheels they are a turning and I doubt anybody could put the brakes on.

I didnt say anything about war. I didn''t say anything about sanctions not being justified for Syria.

In essense I''m just calling attention to a pattern that has led this country to war.

I''m voicing concern that it will be deja vu all over again.

I dont like sanctions. I think years from now people may look on sanctions as forcing countries down the road to war. And ultimately leading them into their doom by weakening them along the way.

In times of crisis in this country, people band together and look towards the government for solutions. Look how far we go to with a little dip in the economy. Imagine how much stronger the effect of sanctions is.

Bush is nowhere close to a malevolent dictator. However, how much different is his crusade against terrorism and any of these dictators staunch defiance against the US?

Bush wants to protect the US from its greatest threat, terrorism. The dictators want to protect their control over their country by telling the people they will be defiant to the US, the ones imposing the sanctions.

Sanctions strengthen defiant resolve and weaken nations physically.

I don''t think we''re going to war with Syria. Syria is going to change their tune just like North Korea has and Iran has.

North Korea changed their tune? Last I heard they were taking wayward sneezing as acts of aggression.

I''m actually thinking Ulairi''s right on this one. Now that we''ve thumped Saddam we''re probably going to throw our weight around for awhile, and try to foster some Middle Easter hegemony.

What about Cuba? What do they need to do to remove the embargo?

What fang said. And the DPRK only started to change its tune after China reined them in. And Iran, they''re just greatful Saddam is gone. I don''t see Syria changing its tune in face of the Bush Administration''s threats. They''ll go to the mat with the US.
