Wargamer's Corner

I really hope they finish this year.

Hearts of Iron 2 Complete on STEAM $22.49

The third one comes out later this year, I think? In Fall?

A new update regarding Heroes of Stalingrad PC from Mark Walker. Work still progresses, a good sign to be sure.

This has been one LONG development unless I'm mistaken.

Yeah, this seems a side project to all of their board games. While I appreciate them dancing with the one that brought 'em, I wish they'd put more people on their PC game!

Anyone messing with Mosby's Confederacy? I just got it. Tried my first mission and had a few questions.

Is it better to charge into the attack, or hang back under cover and try to fire? I lost one guy after a few melees.

Do the starting units have muskets/rifles, or just pistols and swords?

When someone is badly wounded, should I send them home early, or hold them back from the fight? Or will they just die anyway?

It's not possible to capture horses if you are not on that specific mission, right? So I can't get horses on a supply wagon raid?

With a small number of men (5, say) is splitting up to try a flanking move still a good idea? Or is it better to just keep them all together?

Seriously? No Mosby's players?

You questions make it sound like an interesting game.

Mind talking a little about? Is it good?

Hadn't heard of it until you mentioned it - looks interesting, and the price is certainly right.

I'm going to put some more time in this weekend. I thought we'd discussed it but I guess not.

It's a tactical pausable realtime 3/4 view isometric game with a turn-based strategic engine wrapped around it. I've played one turn, so I can't really comment, but it's promising. It's not going to save the world, of course, but it seems entertaining. Still, I'd like to know more about the inner workings.

Kier, it's based on the activities of a famous Confederate raider in Northern Virginia who ran a group of irregulars who harrassed Union forces and sympathizers all out of proportion to their numbers.

I've been wanting to pick up Mosby's, Robear, but i haven't seen a single review yet. And to be honest, I've got too many Steam games right now. Unless it goes on weekend sale:)

I watched a series of documentaries about the Spanish civil war, and it gave me a hankering to see if I could lead the republic to victory over Franco. Real life Franco wins after 3 years, in Hearts of Iron 2 the Allies break their non-intervention pact and with France's help Franco is crushed in 6 months.

It left me feeling unfulfilled so I started up a game wih Germany, it's June 1944 I've crushed the UK, installed Vichy in France, and refused all deals with the Bolsheviks. I've marched on Moscow and Leningrad and getting ready to push through to Stalingrad. I'm getting really bogged down in the land war with the Russians, I've sent the Luftwaffe to Italy as an expeditionary force to fight in Africa and my navy was wiped out destroying the british navy and fighing off the Americans who periodically land troops in Ireland and England. All in all it's been a pretty successful war. My goal is to make Russia a puppet government but it'll take me a while to get my warscore high enough.

The Wargamer reviewed Mosby's earlier this month.

Prozac, did you know that HOI3 is lined up for later this year? There are some developer diaries on it at Paradox Plaza in the forum section for the game.

No I didn't.... Great there goes even more of my life.

And here's the downpayment on that, Prozac.

It's on sale for $13.39 on Impulse right now. Not sure for how long.

I picked this up and finished 4 missions today. As far as charging versus hanging back, I'm playing this a little like an MMO. I try to set up ambushes and send a single soldier forward to pull one or two enemies back to the bulk of my soldiers.

Whenever any of my guys was badly wounded (down to 50% health or less) I sent them home, none have died on me. But if a horse is wounded (lamed), you lose it.

Sadly, you can only capture horses on horse-capture specific missions.

My strategy when I have 5 or less men is to keep 4 of them together. I use the fifth guy as a stealthy scout that moves ahead of that group; he doesn't engage, only detects and pulls.

Troy Goodfellow has a full review here. His blog is a good one to follow, especially for folks reading this thread. He focuses on strategy and war games and updates it frequently.

Mosby's isn't a perfect game. My biggest complaints are that it's really hard to see enemy units under trees and that when you're moving your groups, you can't easily control what direction you want them to face once they've gotten to their destination.

Anyone know anything about Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge?

It's pretty obvious what title they're channeling, but has anyone gotten their hands on it?

P.S. - I know I made a "Help Pred find a wargame to play" thread a couple months back, but damned if I can find it anymore, because there was another title that looked a lot like the one above that I took an interest in. I remember it being modern, and I think it involved the Marines. And I don't think it was Close Combat: Modern Tactics. I can't find it on MatrixGames, anyone have any idea what i'm warbling about?

Everything I've read about Hired Guns has been strongly negative. Even IGN was critical.

I think the other game might have been Combat Mission: Shock Force? That's turn-based or pausable real time, very good now with the Marines expansion. Soon to have a Brit expansion too. From Battlefront.

IGN does take dumps on whipping boys from time to time, as a way of balancing out averages. It's obviously not a title that's spent a lot on marketing or cover art, though.

Combat Mission Shock Force: Marines

Has anyone played this:

I enjoyed Massive Assault as a quick little game, but not enough to buy this without asking.

I don't think Swampy even reads my posts anymore... Sigh... He's sooooo dreamy though...

Anyway, Pred, was it CM:SFM?

Napoleon at Waterloo is now a free download, though you have to cut out the pieces yourself. It's an old game that used to come free with a subscription to Strategy and Tactics - thanks Play This Thing.

I picked it up - it was pretty much crap in the initial release. Havent played it since the patch - just got entirely too frustrating.

Nope, I totally missed that first one, but did see the one about you having the hots for me....what does that say about me, I wonder?

It's a GWJ tradition. Nothing personal.

Almost forgot, you can sign up for beta-testing of Hearts of Iron 3, until 5th March. I definitely don't have enough time on my hands, but some of you maybe do, so go try it.

Time for a self-serving post: Matrix Games and Western Civilization Software, with which I'm involved, will be releasing "Crown of Glory: Emperor's Edition" tomorrow.

Here's the forum URL, in which you can find links to some of the tutorial videos and other stuff that might be of interest: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tt...

Feel free to ask any questions you might have. I'm a regular lurker here, even if an infrequent poster.

Thanks Gil! The simple economy mode makes it a must-buy for me. I really enjoy the strategic/tactical mix, but in the first game, the economy system sank me every time I played. Now I hope I can handle it and still keep my troops in the field.

I really like both your system and Ageod's. I think you guys have a much better handle on the strategic Napoleonic side of things, and with the tactical battles you've played to your strengths and their weaknesses. So they are complementary and both are worth having in my opinion. If I could get AGEOD's ACW strategic system with your tactical play, I'd be in heaven. But I'll settle for a few companies continuing to cover the period and I'll support you guys for doing that.

Congrats on finishing what must have been a long and difficult project!

I still enjoy the CM series (mostly the first 2). I was looking forward to this, but it has taking a long struggle to come to the point. Disappointed, yes. Expected, yes again:

From the Wargamer (and Battlefront):

'...

In a stunning announcement, Battlefront has canceled its Combat Mission Campaigns project. The reason given was simple: the code was never designed for it. In a statement on the Battlefront website, Hunter, the lead developer said, "The problem is that it took too long to develop, and the core engine proved unstable and difficult to fix. I find myself in the position this New Year of having something that is arguably 99% done, and yet we cannot nail the key bugs which prevent release (and no one wants to release something that is deficient). Just like the same time last year. And the year before that."

Clearly this is a disappointment to the Wargaming community. However, in a gesture to the community, the source code is being released to the public in the hope that other coders may be able to finish the work. Hunter went on to add, "Too much work, sweat and blood was invested by too many people to let it simply vanish. And who knows, maybe there are skilled individuals out there who have the time and energy to take what we have and lead it to a conclusion." Let's hope so.

The source code and assets can be found at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cmca....

Hunter's full statement can be found here: http://www.battlefront.com/community...

The official Combat Mission Campaigns page can be found here: http://www.battlefront.com/index.php....

Thank you for the valiant effort, Hunter. Let's hope the community can pick up where you have left off.

Thanks, Patrocles!
