Guilty Pleasures (TV)

In light of Elysium's Guilty Pleasures (Music) topic, I thought I'd create a TV centered topic, as I have a few guilty TV pleasures. They are:

1. Worlds Worst Drivers/Scariest Police Videos/Wildest Police Chases, etc...: Call me a redneck, call me what you will, but I just LOVE these shows. Several channels, such as Fox, Discovery, and TLC, have shows related to this sort of thing, and I just can't get enough of 'em. There, I admitted it, my white trash background has shown through!

2. The Dead Zone on USA: I just ADORE this show. It can be silly at times, sure, and most of the actors besides Anthony Michael Hall can such, it's an excellent show.

3. Insomniac with Dave Attell: While not necessarily a guilty pleasure, this has to be one of my favorite shows on TV.

Your turn.

The only shows I watch on T.V. are Buffy and Angel, and I wouldn''t call those guilty pleasures. Guess I don''t have any right now.

RealTV on TNN. Sometimes its just stupid, but its usually fascinating in that car wreck sorta way. Also, they show it 20 times a day so it is usually on when I want to take a break.

I''ve said it before: Survivor. Let the derision begin. I held the show in utter contempt during the first season. Managed not to watch it until the second; then I was hooked. So far, I''d have to say that this season is turning out to be the best of the bunch.

I really like the new Dragnet show with Al Bundy and the kid from ""Can''t Hardly Wait.""

Sorority Life...the first season at least. I think I met all the rejects for that show.

I heard that the new Dragnet is really good. Ed O''Neil is an excellent actor, but I''ve not seen it yet

Yeah me too, surprisingly good.

Mmm guilty pleasures... heh Power Puff Girls

Surreal Life
Beverly Hills 90210 -when it was on.
Joe Millionaire

Thankfully my wife likes them, it gives me an excuse to watch without feeling too guilty.

Friends.

I don''t know why, but I identify well with Chandler. He''s sort of my sarcasm hero.

. Worlds Worst Drivers/Scariest Police Videos/Wildest Police Chases, etc...:

I''d have to go with Veloxi on this one, So crass and tasteless sometimes but still, it''s like a car wreck, sometimes you just can''t look away, much as you know you should (and often want to!) especially those ""When (insert anything here) attacks/goes bad etc/goes wrong...whatever"" shows!

So crass and tasteless sometimes but still, it''s like a car wreck,

Literally.

Does ""Charmed"" count? I totally despise the idea behind Wicca yet I like the show because of Cole, Piper and her white lighter boyfriend.

I watched quite a bit of ""American Idol"" last season. I like Kelly Clarkson. Her singing makes me smile for some reason. She really conveys on stage that she likes what she''s doing.

If we are counting movies, I think that ""Cody Banks"" movie looks pretty funny. Especialy the clip where hes doin a flying jump punch at a bad guy. Pretty bad ass and convincing for the kid from ""Malcom in the Middle"". Due to my current addiction to anime, I dig the whole cute-and-innocent-turning out-to-be-ultra-bad-ass gimmick.

thanks to my gf ""Deutschland such den Superstar"" that damn ""country xy searches their star"" show. Thank god its over now.

Ha I saw parts of the grand finale on RTL, coincided with our finale of Idols which was terrible though exciting.

it was a horror I tell you. But for some reason one has to watch until it is over. Sad how few control I have over my TV habits

One of my favorite parts of the ""World''s Wildest Police Videos/Car Crashes/Wifebeaters"" types of shows is that the announcer (in that stern state trooper voice) always tries to justify the show by saying something like ""Why do we show these images to you? Because knowledge is power!""

Get over yourself, robocop... it''s only for ratings. And they get mine.

As for other guilty pleasures:

Joe Millionaire (didn''t miss a second, even the ""recap"" shows)
Survivor when I catch it
American Idol

Holy crap, I''ve become everything I used to hate.

I own all three seasons of Sex and the City on DVD. Yes, that''s right.

I''m also capable of watching the same episode of the Real World on MTV upwards of 6-10 times. The same freaking episode.

Wow, you win

After that, I''m just gonna go sit in the corner and pretend to be relevant to this thread. Luda, get help now. It''s not too late.

I''ve just discovered a new guilty pleasure in Meet My Folks, or as in the case of last night''s episode, Date My Mom. The lie-detector bit is hysterical.

OMFG, Luda, if there were points involved here, you''d win in a landslide.

That''s what you get for an open forum that enquires about my dirty little habits.

Luda, I''m with you 100% on the Real World. I can totally shut my brain off and transfix on that show.

Hmm... What else..?
Big Brother
Blind Date
Cheaters

I don''t feel any guilt in admitting this, but I feel one of the best new shows on television (and the best reality show) is ABC''s Profiles from the Front Line, which follows around the men and women of the US Armed Forces in and around Afghanistan. That sequence last night with the S3 pilot trying a night-trap is amazing to watch.

It's not TV related, but I just realized that every year come Christmas/New Year, I have to watch Mel Gibson's Payback. Dunno why the itch turns around Xmas, it just does.
And since last year I watch both Payback and Keanu Reeves' John Wick.
Must be some deep-seated Xmas Revenge Power Fantasy Syndrome.

Hehe, I watched John Wick again, over the Thanksgiving weekend.

I liked Payback OK, and John Wick even more. I think it turned out really well, maybe because the initial expectations were low. They knew how to play up to Keanu Reeves' acting strengths:

It's fun high-bodycount-movie and the cast is gorgeous. I mean, Keanu is dreamy, Defoe is well, fricking Defoe, the Russian mob guy gives a nice vibe (just ignore the "russian" they are speaking, basically nobody in that mob could order a sandwitch in Moscow. Without subtitles its impossible to understand wtf are they talking about). And icing on the cake - Ian McShane.

And the sureal underworld coins-system and the hotel was really a clincher, it seemed almost Neil Gaiman-ish in some respects - a secret, invisible world with it's own rules and most importantly - not overexposed with some crappy voiceovers or somesuch.

After all of the above I didnt really care about the story being .. thin at best. It was just cool and I was in for the ride.

They killed the puppy. So my wife walked out. I enjoyed the rest of it but... they killed the puppy so I am done with John Wick.
Also, my guilty pleasures are "the Originals" and probably "Supergirl". (SG has a kind of Buffy vibe for me with quite a bit less of Joss's trademark camp)

But that's what makes the rest of the movie so satisfying in a very grim way. We can all sympathize with wick's desire for revenge because the bad guy made the ultimate film mistake. He killed a cuddly animal.
