Freelancer-Worth a purchase?

So my dilemma is that I have a very discerning budget when it comes to games. If its a sure fire cant miss well crafted game Im in(like battlefield 1942). If its a flash in the pan thats only fun for a month or so Im out(like any of the numerous games that everybody online raves about for 2 weeks and then all you hear is crickets). Somehow I've changed my focus where pc games are concerned and really only play online with friends saving the single player experience for the consoles( I'm not sure how or when this happened, but it seems I just cant bring myself to spend my gaming time playing single player pc games). So to those of you whose first response is "play the demo" theres reason 1 why it wont work for me. And now to the question itself.

How is the mp in freelancer?

For now, I''m going to suggest it''s a flash in the pan. I think the online component is fun but there just isn''t a whole heck of a lot to do. Fly around with friends, blow up other ships and take vanilla missions once in a while.

Without the storyline found in the single player, as it stands right now I think the world isn''t compelling enough play online for any real length of time.

I have got to agree with Certis. Single player is fun, but the multiplayer is lacking. It needs a story or something to drive it. Other wise it is as Certis said, fly around, kill bad guys, take up a mission once in a while. It is fun to explore, but that has gotton old so far.

Sounds suspiciously like another mucho-hyped game of about a year ago, you know, the one by that Canadian dev house...

They need to release a nwn class editor so you can build story compoents for your server. Make the whole thing a space mini MMP.

Dammit! Can''t you let my veiled references sit for awhile before you post an answer?

mmh tried the demo now. this game is fun. Sadly it won''t get released here until april :(. I''ll see if I can get an import somewhere.

I won''t give an answer to my ""bordering on fanboi"" bias towards the game. I just received this and Forgotten Battles today. My life is complete, and I may die happy.

Thanks for the tips guys, now I just have to listen to them and stay out of any software stores

I''ll see if I can get an import somewhere.

To be serious, the demo gave me the impression that this was a ""Cup of Tea"" game, as in it may or may not be your particular one. Same goes for games like MOO3 and Raven Shield.

I love this game and I very rarely ever give a rats ass about most games even after I buy them. There is some truth in what Certis says, but it is amazing fun. If they release any kind of tools for missions it will be perfect. There is already instructions on some of the fan sites and how to build your own Solar Systems; it''s still at and early stage but it works. I''ve been playing multi on Evils server for a few days know and there is nothing like teaming up with other people and doing runs or building up your ship. I haven''t been everywhere yet and seen all the ships so I cant speak to it''s replay value..but the amount of fun I''ve gotten out of it so far makes it all worth it. The game is just FUN. I was really surprised by this one, thank God.

I''ll definitely pick up FL, however, first I''m going to get Praetorians.

Btw, I have a question about the FL demo. I read that it''s over once you reach level 2. Does it end abruptly? I was fighting some guys, killed them and all of a sudden that ''ad screen'' (which you get to see when exiting the game) appeared. I thought it was over now, but it switched back to the game again after that. Wanted to return to the station and a few mins later said screen appeared again out of the nowhere, this time I ended up looking at my desktop. Was that a bug or is the demo supposed to end like this?

It sure did! At least for me. I was pretty surprised and a little disappointed that they couldn''t at least work a star-wipe or something into that. I thought I broke something. It was only after playing through the demo the second time that I caught on.

If you still want to milk some gameplay out of the demo, check out some of the demo mods at http://www.lancersreactor.com/t/. One of them ups the dollar cap for the level while another gives you more of a selection of buyable ships.

It is a pity it ends so abruptly and I actually did download the more ships mod and ran it but after starting again and seeing some of the ships I decided not to spoil it anymore for myself. I''m just so that this game won''t come out for another month here. I''m giving pretty serious consideration to importing a US copy of the game.

If the games good enough for me to spend two weeks replaying it in various ways (getting friendly with the LIberty Rogues is good fun but seriously limits your ability to dock with other stations without getting your ship shot into confetti by the police!) it''s got to be good!

One month isn''t that bad. You just need to wait out some of the hype. I know it''s rough, especially when it''s the topic du jour on a lot of sites. Just pop down to the local and let it slip from your mind a little. Or buy a fat book, like something by Robert Jordan, and it will be next month before you know it.

Besides, I think in another month you''ll be able to see how the modding community is supporting it, and what kind of future it has.

Easy for me to say since I played it until midnight last night.

I just got back from lunch where I sat in a corner booth and played Freelancer while I chowed down on a giant spud. It runs great on a 1.1 ghz with 128mb ram and 16mb mobility Radeon.

freelancer is a lot of fun.

the story is great.

i would say the actual game you play out of the box is far better than NWN.

it does not have any editor so thats a 1-0 loss.

i htink freelancer is the anti-NWN

NWN has a multiplayer editor but no world to play in and has a questionably decent single player campaign.

Freelancer has a great single player campaign and vast multiplayer universe to explore. yet it lacks a editor or any kinda of ability to create experiences in the multiplayer world.

Ok, after playing the demo now for a while here''s my take:

Without a dynamic economy the world feels kinda dead. Don''t get me wrong, the game is fun, but it''s odd to see that none of those AI freighters and their loads have any effect on the economy/demand. It doesn''t destroy the game, but definitely affects the immersion.

It''s not possible to get ''jobs on the run'' - unless it''s an scripted story event later in the game I guess. It would be cooler if you also could get some of the police jobs directly through chatting with cops in space instead of always running to the job boards in bars. Or some trader who hires you as escort spontaneously if you drop a message.

Course memory is a funny thing, the NWN editor was crap out of the box and arguable still is in a lot of respects. Most world builder GM''s will tell you that NWN did not actually ship with a game editor, it came with a miniature torture device :). That being said maybe they will add it with an expansion or as it''s own thing (hell I would pay $20 for something decent stable after market, not to be confused the first 50 passes of the NWN editor).

Just picked up Freelancer this weekend- wow. I can allready see how it could get a bit stale, but ....when you''re in that crazy furball with bolts, missiles, enemy ships and god knows what else flying all over the place...purdy!

It just feels right, fast, smooth. I even like the outside perspective on your ship, /boggle.

It''s not going to unseat Independance War 2 as my favorite modern space sim, methinks. But still, damn nice game.

Just my opinion, but I really think Neverwinter is just-a-teensy-bit overrated. It''s pretty, fun at times, yadda yadda. But something''s missing. Played through the whole thing, tinkered a little, then it got bumped off the HDD. My gut reaction to it is ''If I wanted diablo, I''d play diablo''. I actually enjoyed Icewind Dale 2 more. Alot more.
