I got the Freelancer beta today! Woohoo! Screenshots Inside!

I am so damned excited, because I just got the beta of a game I've been waiting almost five years for, Freelancer. I just spent about eight hours straight playing the game, something I've not done for a VERY long time. This game is incredibly awesome. Here's some screenshots I took of the game in action.

I'm working on a preview for the game, so I can't reveal everything, but I'd be happy to answer what I can if anyone has any questions. I'll be busy for a while, so don't expect a quick response. Thanks.

Ok, I want info on the debate going on about using the mouse for flight, like or dislike?

Oh, congrats !!!

Also, how does it run on your system? Do you see it being a resource hog?

The mouse-based control system is elegant and works quite well. It''s basically the same as it would be with a joystick (which isn''t supported, so don''t ask). BAsically you control your thrust using the WASD keys, use your mouse as the yoke, and fire weapons with the right mouse button. It''s not Quake in space, however, more like Wing Commander with a mouse. It''s also a lot quicker than a stick, since less movement is needed on the part of the user.

It runs like a champ on my system (Athlon 2000 XP, GeForce 4, 512 MB of RAM), the ""recommended"" reqs are a 1 Ghz processor, 256 MB of RAM, and a 32 MB video card.

Anymore info or thoughts would be appreciated. I''ve been kinda excited about this game too, though the no joystick decision put a bit of a damper on my enthusiasm.

Please don''t let it damper your enthusiasm, it didn''t damper mine, and I''m a long-time joystick jockey. The mouse control is elegant and efficient, and works VERY well. The gameplay is fun, with random missions, a real living universe (I''ve seen several examples of this), and much more. Basically, if you liked Elite or Privateer, you''ll LOVE this.

Can you visit those planets and walk on em or are you always flying

Yes, you can visit many of the planets as well as numerous bases scattered around the reigon. Also, folks, bear in mind, all of these screenshots were taken in only one reigon of space. I don''t know how many other reigons there are, but the galaxy map shows at least 5 others. This game os HUGE.

Sold!

Ooooohhh, I am intrested in this game now.

Oh, and since they took out joystick code, did they add code for FUN!

Thanks Veloxi, that gives me hope. Like I said I''ve been pretty excited about this game. Look forward to trying it.

How about they release a demo? Maybe, just maybe, we''ll find out this control scheme handles without blowing cash on the game.

I betcha they''ll release some sort of limited demo with only one solar system or something like that, at least I hope they do.

Edit: By the way, I''m trying to answer more FL questions, but am getting a bit overwhelmed by multiple sites (which is my own fault, I suppose). I''d like to ask that if you have any further questions about Freelancer, head over to this forum on my site to ask, so all of the questions are in one central place and I don''t need to repeat myself. Thanks.

Dayum, thread bumping and self pimpage all in the same post. Hi there folks, just wanted to let y''all know that my in-depth preview of Freelancer is now up at The Wargamer for your reading enjoyment. I hope you enjoy the article and find it informative.

Thanks Veloxi !!!

Good read

Hey, I''m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading.

Even though it''s a subscriber exclusive at the moment, FilePlanet has a new demo of Freelancer, which you can find here. I don''t like that it''s an exclusive only to subscribers, but hopefully that will change soon.

I would hope so too. Many people (myself included) are placing their decision to buy on that demo. I am slowly starting to dislike Gamespy even more now.

Please please please bring a non-subscriber demo out soon. This has been high on my list of ""most anticipated"" games since it was announced!

What are the sys requirements of Freelancer, btw?

WooHoo!

HEy, I like the mouse based stuff... It''s not bad what I dont like is you cannot get past the cut scenes... Very annoying..

Hey, I can pump the DEMO over to someone in MIRC if they''re interested, just sign onto a server and I''ll send it to ya....

send me a personal message if you''re interested....

I told ya. Also, doesn''t the ESC key bypass cinematics? It sure does in the beta.

It doesn''t, hey I gotta admit, I really like the game. I see a BIG UNIVERSE to explore, and lots of interesting ship upgrades. The game doesn''t look as PRETTY as EVE ONLINE, but, it''s still good stuff.

I agree. My anticipation for this game has only skyrocketed with the demo. The mouse flight takes a few missions to get a handle on, but once you''ve got it ... it''s just fluid!

Yea, think we gots a winner on our hands me frinds!

Yup yup, the mouse control scheme works like a champ, don''t it?
