Mount & Blade Mod Recommendations

Seeing as how we have quite a few Mount & Blade players here, I think it's time we collect our favorite mods. A couple requirements before you post a mod:

1) You have to have actually played it.
2) List whether it's a "native" mod (meaning it adjusts the default game) or a custom mod (meaning you load a non-native version of the game).
3) Link to the mod in question.

You can find a lot of general mod discussion on the official forums.

Here is a compilation of little tweaks and changes you can adjust in the game files.

Graphical mods (native)
These are mods that make the game look better without changing the overall layout of the levels or overland map. Mods that change the map tend to get NPCs stuck in geometry and some towns unreachable.

Better Horses

Building Replacement Mod

Bumpy Textures

Colorful Textures

Face Textures

Flying Missile Replacer

Graphical Enhancement 2.5 + Addons + HDR

Punkt's High Resolution Textures 2.0

Sky Textures

Gameplay Mod

Battle Size Changer (Native and non-native) - Lets you play with more troops in battles. 220 max was the sweet spot for me.

Alter The Chance of Capturing Lords I think by default there's only a 10% chance of capturing a rival lord. I changed it to 50%. Smug bastards.

Did you find it tricky to install all of those graphical mods together?

They all come with instructions so it's not too bad. Wouldn't hurt to backup your game files before you start applying mods, though.

Your flying missle replacer link wasn't working -- that or I'm an interface and mouse idiot, which is completely and entirely possible.

Looks like that particular site is down right now.

My mod list includes most of Certis's, but there's a couple differences:

And instead of Sky Textures, I'm using TheWitcher & Soil's Panoramic Mod. Just put out a 2.0 version, and it looks really good.

I'm also using the Official Vocals & Cries of War bundled mod. Really improves alot of the sounds and adds some more variety.

If anyone's interested, I could give some suggestions for total conversion mods of earlier versions of M&B. Some of them are quite polished and lots of fun.

Rule of thumb: If you don't back up early and often, you will hose your game when modding it. That's just a fact of life.

Backups. Just do it.

I'm very interested!

One thing people might do is list two critical pieces of information for these mods.

One: What version is it for? Not all mods will work with all versions, some of them aren't being supported any more, etc.

Two: Is it saved game compatible? Some mods/tweaks are, some aren't, trying to use a mod that isn't with your current game will probably end in sorrow.

Got any screenshots of how the game looks with ALL those visual mods installed? My main aesthetic gripe is the characters in the game (close second are the grounds, walls, and lighting)

Here's a page with a list:

I've played the 100 Years War, which is a lot of fun, as I have mentioned and the Age of Machinery Mod, which I've only had the opportunity to play for about 4 hours so far. In the Age of Machinery Mod, you can become king, recruit lords, and slaughter people with flaming balls of fire and onagers. Of course, capturing the engineers to get my siege engine working has been tough, but well worth it and it really changes the way you set your troops up on the field of battle.

I'm going to try that 100 Years War mod. It might've been you describing it in a previous post, but it sounds like it adds a whole new flavor to the game.

Another thing I'll be looking forward to see is the gun-units. I know that the game itself supports guns etc, but they just chose note to use them in the vanilla mode.

Then I can make some recommendations:
My favorite mod so far has been:
867 AD: Lords of War (.903) - The Danish invasion of Britain It looks like Markus is porting his work and improving it for 1.011. Its only one guy and he's doing it because he enjoys it, so he's been very good in terms of historical accuracy and gameplay, but its been pretty slow going. Fantastic models and production value all the way through, with a touch of Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Tales.

Dark Age: Viking Raiders - At one point, this was running in parallel to Lords of War, both set in the same year in the same place. I liked this one, but 867 AD won me over with the quality of its gameplay and research.

Land of Eternal Youth (.960) - Last days of the Roman Empire in Britain. Really enjoyed this one, too, and looking forward to the ongoing port to 1.011.

Hundred Years War (1.011) - Played it a couple versions back, but it didn't grab me in the same way that the earlier mods did. Lacked an element of polish and continuity, I think, but maybe I should give it a second run, given the love that's been shown in the other thread.

If you can't tell, my taste runs toward the historical, high-quality mods. There was at least one really good mod for <.903 versions that doesn't seem to be available on the Taleworlds forums.

These have been running for a long time, but I never gave them a shot. All seem to be out for 1.011, though, so they might be worth a shot:
Peleponnisian War
Eagle & the Radiant Cross

The all-time best M&B mod I've played has been Storymod. It added a great RPG-like campaign, replaced the map and even had Easter eggs. Unfortunately it hasn't been updated since version .751, though the developers keep saying that it's coming 'soon'. Also if you want a good read check out the mod author's books online.

Another great one was the Last Days (LOTR) mod, which supposedly you can port to 1.0 by going here..

Anyone, um... try the Star Wars mod yet. I just can't get my geek-meter that high in order to try it out. Star Wars is like Ice Cream and M&B is like Bacon, but I'm not sold on Bacon Ice cream.

Question: my game came from Steam. Its version is listed as 1.010. I see people talking about 1.011, but when I tell my install to look for updates, it tells me I have the latest version installed.

Edit: That's not a question. My question is, do I actually have the latest version?

The version difference between 1.010 and 1.011 is very minor. All it did was make 1.000 - 1.003 save games compatible again with the latest version.
1.011 also breaks save game compatibility from 1.010 to 1.011 and I think this is why Valve chose note to release it. All their Steam customer save games would have been invalidated.

If you ever want to, you can take the cdkey from your steam install, download the 1.011 full client install seperately from taleworlds, install it and then activiate it with your steam cd key.

I think 1.010 and 1.011 share mod compatibility.

As far as all the mods I've used so far, they do -- there's not problems using those that are listed 1.011 for 1.010 (or the steam version)

Colorful Textures

Wow, this mod is terrific! Didn't care for those other hi-res texture ones, but this set looks phenomenal. These should definitely be the default textures that ship with the game.

Remembered that I'm also using the minimalist HUD mod. Got it on the smallest option, borderless health bar and no shield indicator.

I'm running mods only for the stuff that really bothers me until I get a bit worn on the vanilla game. So far all that's meant is the above-linked battle size mod and this cattle mod, which causes cattle to follow rather than run away from you.

This game is screaming for a Japanese fight for the Shogunate mod. Anything like that or in development?

I need a more maneuverable horse. And faster two. Chasing those Khergit f*ckers on horses the whole battle, missing by inches with my lance, is getting old.

Switch to bow, the lance is best for stopped or charging horses. If I have to run one down, the bow always does me proud. Today I was barreling down on someone, shot his horse out from under him, and as I was passing by, headshotted him as he was getting up.

The perfect touch was that he was the last guy, so everyone started cheering.

Yeah, it's just that the bow is less satisfying to me. And I run out of arrows so soon.

I'm having problems finding the steam install directory for Mount & Blade in order install some of these mods, any idea where they would be?

There is one somewhere for the older versions.

Tonight in the Age of Machines, I was riding toward the enemy who had trebuchets and booking it to see if I could clear them off before they decimated my foot soldiers. I got halfway across the map, and then there was this explosion. Really loud. Then I was off my horse. Then another rock popped me before I even got up. I never realized they had snipers manning those dang things. I wish I would've remembered the screen shots.

By the way -- how do you take screenies, and I'll post one up here with as I charge the next onager or trebuchet

Check the Controls in Options. I think it's something odd like ctrl-Ins.

I couldn't get the dowloads to work ysterday but they're fine today. Thanks Certis!

Cavalry wants you to chase them, so you're best option it not to. I've recently had allot of success telling everyone on foot to stand together on a rise (the higher the better) and ordering my cavalry to follow me so we can lure the opposition to the bloodthirsty mass.

You could try javelins. Not much ammo, but VERY satisfying. I use them for spiking people I can't quite reach.
