Quality over quantity should be a mantra though! When doing updates, make sure they are concise, and hopefully something someone else would find interesting - if not, best to hold off. Also, make sure to respond - it's a two way communications mechanism, not just a deposit box for your verbal nuggets.

That does get a little tricky at times. I have a Goodjer collection, plus some family, plus some friends, and am now growing a collection of local IT folks.

I can't make everyone happy all the time.

Yeah. My advice is to just treat it like you would a mini-blog. Write about what you want to write about. People may follow you or drop you, but part of what Twitter is supposed to be about is letting people know WHERE you are and WHAT you're doing. If you want to post about what you had for lunch, go for it. IF you just want to use it like an RSS reader, you can just sit silently and follow.

Personally, I don't follow very many people-- you can get into a virtual flood of posts if you subscribe to too many other feeds (the news agency links, especially). I tend to not follow any "celebrities" or news feeds, and only add people whose Twitter history seems to imply they have interesting things to say. I'm also pretty bad at updating my "following" list, so there are probably many people who DO have interesting things to say, but I just haven't gotten around to adding them yet.

If you look back in this thread, I also thought it was pointless at first... I've really changed my mind over the last months. Think of it like an IM program that goes to a pool of participants rather than a single individual.

I signed up for Twitter when the 1UPocalypse happened just so I could keep track of where the ex-staffers end up when they get back on their feet. I really have nothing to say on my Twitter, I think I might just start posting links to cool stuff for now (or pleas for job tips? )

Late to the party as always. I'm going to give this a shot, as doing real-size blogs is too much hassle. http://twitter.com/wanderingtaoist

Guess I'm next to post my Twitter link...

I'm new to this Twitter thing too.

Ooookay, everyone is probably over Twitter by the time I join, but here I am.

I like that I can post from my phone. I doubt anyone else will like that I can post from my phone.

Hey, jerk, my twitter account is private for this very reason.

Also why I didn't reply to Pyro with the offer to look up some of my friends in TN for him.

Most annoying thing about Twitter? People who f*cking "live tweet" through TV shows. I'm getting a bunch of "OMG!" and "WTF!?" posts as people feel a desperate need to micro-blog their LOST season premiere experiences.

I've been messing around with Tweetdeck, and it's pretty sweet.

http://twitter.com/ColdstreamGWJ if you're interested in whatever my diseased mind feels like commenting upon.

I've already run out of things to say on Twitter, so I'm now on my third or fourth day of posting zombie-related haikus.

This is why you should be using Twitter:

Private tweets that should not have been posted in public.

Sorry, lunabean. That was rude and inconsiderate of me. Nothing to see here, folks.

:sheepish:

Ah. I was wondering if your meds had run out.

What?!

Why wasn't I informed of this and why weren't you on my followed list until now?!

Those are pretty funny, thanks.

And for everyone else, QUALITY over QUANTITY! I'm going to cut Brent Spiner, Levar Burton and Wil Wheaton soon if they don't shut up - they are clogging up my Goodjer tweets.

Well come on, what else do they have to do all day?

Yeah, I'm thinking N'Gai is going to get the axe here soon. If I wanted a giant list of links, I'd search for them. Give me your thoughts, man, not your favourites list.

I know I spend too much time on Twitter, but that's the reason I don't tend to follow "personalities" on there. Thing is, there are a few folks I've followed who occasionally break off the spammish tweets and say something actually worthwhile.

Shawn Elliott might get the cut too, he posts about 10 links an hour with no explanation. Granted, a lot of them are pretty funny, but so is Digg.com

@thatbarnettblok doesn't seem to understand Twitter's philosophy of get in, get out. He posted 10 tweets in a row just now of one continued train of thought. Yup.

Thanks to the 1up fallout, I am now a twitter user.

Precisely. My experience with N'Gai, admittedly through the filter of his edited postings online, is that he is a highly-intelligent commentator on the genre of entertainment from which I derive a great deal of enjoyment. I started following his feed in the hope that little gems might drop from that admirable mind, but instead I get links.

Personally, I'm just trying to give value for money by giving people a glimpse into the swirling madness of my mind at 6am. I need to do another round of Goodjer add-ins though, as there are some folks, like that Zoidberg bloke, who aren't on my list.

Probably not worth it.

Once you've got E-Munnie on your Twitter list, all else is superfluous, eh?

Once you go Munnie, the rest just aren't funny.
