Kick Baby New Year to the Curb, it's Old Man Pile for Us

Gnah... Did anyone else find GRAW teeth-grindingly frustrating (I'm sure the grammar is off there, but bite me) in some places? Your team AI seems to be of the opinion that enemy bullets provide a healthy dose of minerals and vitamins, and enemies are ridiculously accurate with their weapons. It's a great game, but god do I wish I could just play it without my team. Speaking of which, if you complete a mission with one dead, is he gone forever? I haven't had to find out yet, because generally when my team died, I didn't last all that long either.

Yes, and the checkpoints are brutal as well. I've had the game on my hard-drive for years and never finished the first mission, luckily I got it cheap.

For those of you interested, Brainy Gamer's Vintage Games Club is discussing their next title to play and "over-analyze."

Here's the short list:

  • Chrono Trigger
  • Resident Evil (original)
  • Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
  • Super Mario 64
  • Beyond Good and Evil

Poacher!

This is my first attempt at this so I will start light.

I will add Penny Arcade Episode 1 to my pile for this month. I am almost done.

Agreed, any checkpoint-based save system on the PC is a bad idea. I'm at the end of the third mission, and it's getting to the point where I am honestly contemplating quitting forever. Games are meant to be, y'know, fun...

Kudos to you for getting that far, I don't think checkpoints have a place on any system newer than a PS2. Anyone who disagrees can shut their mouths.

I love me a tactical, team shooter. I've been trying to find Swat 4 in a local store for ages now, Swat 3 is one of my all time favourites.

But don't make yourself suffer if the game isn't co-operating, that isn't the point of the pile.

;)

I have every intent of double-billing.

FFX falls! Man, I was correct about all my predictions as I was going through the game. I'm sort of disappointed that I wasn't more surprised by the ending, but it still was able to throw a few curveballs at me. Overall though it was a very, very good game. I'm glad I put the time in to finish it finally.

Up next? Mercenaries 2 for the 360 and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops for the PSP!

Congratulations! I've still got to get through it, I'm at Bevelle Temple now. Haven't played it since I picked up my 360 2 weeks ago.

And on that note, I finished Halo 3 last night

World in Conflict falls to my military prowess. I had a lot of fun with that game, although if I never have to hear "Parker!" again, it'll be too soon.

Next up: Mass Effect. I'm thinking this will be my game for next month, but I'll get started now.

Hrm, on second thought I want to tackle something a bit different right now Hemi, so chalk me up for Okami on PS2. No Mercenaries or MGS right now.

I've run into the soul sucking portion of BG&E. I'm 23 pearls short of the engine to get to the moon and I really don't want to have to hunt them up. I hate when they add features like this to stretch the game out. I'm cool with having the side content there if you feel like it, but don't make it essential to the main story.

Phew...plugging away slowly at Dead Space. It's a bit of a slog...not because it's bad, just because I'm a big wuss when it comes to horror games Chapter six and counting...

BTW, are there many more sequences with creatures you can't kill and have to run away from? I absolutely HATE that.

Still have about 10 missions left in Ace Combat... Good thing January is a long month.

The Witcher goes down....and I'm sorry that it ended, what a game.

I want to play again with the opposite choices, but need to move on to Dead Space first.

When I tire of Guild Wars I plan on jumping into Assassin's Creed (PC). I had no intention of ever getting this. And then I saw it for $10. I have to imagine it'll be worth that.

Go to the top of the volcano. You'll thank me later.

Oh, and Penny Arcade Episode 2 Down!

I'm a pile of shame monster this month!

World of Goo next.

Penny Arcade Episode 2 is down. Very funny game, can't wait for the third one.

Scratches is down! Certainly not my usual choice of game, and I don't see myself going out of my way to pick up more of its type, but it had its moments. A well realized setting, a creepy atmosphere, a sense of constantly being unsure of exactly what was going on, and good sound direction.

On the downside, the voice work of the main character leaves a bit to be desired, the interface takes some getting used to, the pace of the game is stunningly slow at times - especially when you don't realize what you are supposed to do next, some parts are difficult to stomach (the main character decides to go back to sleep immediately following the scariest moment in the game - without having done anything ABOUT the scary thing!), the use of triggers (cannot examine/use/pick up certain items without fulfilling other prerequisites yet), and a handful of puzzles (mostly at the end) are really obscure (thanks gamefaqs!)

Overall enjoyable and immersive, but the Myst-style adventure is not my new favorite genre.

F.E.A.R. is finished. Wow. That game is truly amazing. The level design did a great job of holding my suspense for the entire game. They threw just enough at you to always keep you on your toes, but not so much that it got old (Doom 3). This game is definitely on my top 5 games of all times.

Still working on Twilight Princess, though it's slow. It will probably be pushed into next month as well.

Alright, dammit, I'm in.

PC: Half-Life 2. I've been plugging ineffectually at this since it was released.

360: Bioshock. I can't string together enough consecutive hours of care to finish this. I know I haven't reached the "twist", whatever it is. Currently slumming in Fort Frolic.

Man, you're not kidding. I've tried three times to give a crap about this game, but I just can't get into it. I think I'm going to throw it on easy-mode and blast through just for the story/environment. This will probably be my game for March or April.

I'm working on Need For Speed: Most Wanted for the Xbox 360 - I had nearly beaten twice on the GameCube, and being as fun as it is, well, I'm glad to be playing it on the 360 - easily my favorite racing game since the Road Rash games.

Sometime I'll get back to FFX - just can't seem to build the desire for it.

Slowly making progress through God of War. Am up to Pandora's Temple. I'm finding it hard to make myself play the game in anything but short sittings. I'm having fun playing, but I feel burnt out after doing much more than 30 minutes or so in a single stretch. I think it has something to do with not having recharging health. I know health pick-ups are frequent, but it still feels like I have to be on and focused all the time, or else I'm going to get caught going into a fight without enough resources to get through it.

Great idea, and that's exactly what I did. Put it on pansy mode, turned on the "go this way, dummy" arrow and got further along. I am now past what I assume is the twist and cruising.

Had the same problem, tried the same solution and it worked for me until the end. Good luck to the both of ya!

I'm still grinding away at BG&E in the first factory since joining IRIS. I'll be happy when I reach the point where my last savegame crashed, although I can't say I remember much from last time.

"I'm tru wit dis guy." Crushed over lunch. I got a bit misty over my "saved all little sisters" ending so I'm well pleased. Once I went the pansy route it was essentially a walk in the park the rest of the way which, given my goal of just completing the game, was okay. I still had Adam left over, I had abilities and slots that went to waste. The problem is my typical problem with games: I never know quite how I want to specialize. Good game, though.

Anybody ever finish Link's Awakening for the original Gameboy? I am on attempt 3 now (spanning 14 years, no less) and keep getting hung up near the endgame. I've made it further than ever before - 8th dungeon - but the idea of going back in there is really dissuading. Also I feel like I should be grabbing some walkthroughs and getting all the heart packs, since once I'm done this game I'll probably never go at it again. Stupid OCD.

Damn you endgame cold-feet!

That's the only Zelda game I've ever beaten. I've probably played it 5 or 6 times, because I absolutely love the ending of it. It's so bittersweet.

I'm a new 360 owner and have resolved to not build a big pile before finishing games in my current pile first. I'm working on GTA IV right now and will start Guitar Hero World Tour next (everything up to Hard).

On the Wii , my daughter finished Twilight Princess on her own, so that motivated me to put Super Mario Galaxy on the list next. We're also slogging through Lego Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Panda.

So for me it's:

GTA IV
Guitar Hero: World Tour
Lego Indiana Jones
Kung Fu Panda
Super Mario Galaxy.

I hope to have them all done by March... yeah right
