Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2

Won't buy Dawn of War 2. Period.

After months of waiting for the patch to fix basic bugs and exploits, the sh*tty support for Soultstorm, the last Dawn of War product, convinced me not to throw any more money at them. Bad support + Gamespy for the multiplay lobby = wtf? Sorry, Relic, you blew it.

I'm not even sure the patch ever arrived, come to think about it. Won't even go into the horrors stories I heard about the support for the 3rd DoW chapter, the one after Winter Assault, forgot the name. The one with the Necrons, I didn't play during that time, dropped out after Winter Assault, came back with Soulstorm.

Just to let you know, Dawn of War: Soulstorm was not developed by Relic. It was done by Iron Lore Entertainment.

Who went out of business as soon as Soulstorm was released.

As it is no surprise here, I'm a huge WH40K fan and have dearly loved all the work Relic has but into the WH40K RTS. With that said, Soulstorm should have never been made. It was too obvious that this became another cash grab targeted at the fans of the series (myself included). The only thing that really differentiated Soulstorm from a well done mod was the inclusion of the global special abilities for the Dark Eldar and Sisters of Battle; something that was not well received.

And the air units. That made even less sense.

I suspect that Relic was so deep into Dawn of War 2, that when Iron Lore shut down they did not have the time to devote to patch out bugs created by the latter. It is a shame that the Dawn of War 1 series had to end on a lower note with Soulstorm.

So it looks like commander equipment is just a selection of mutually exclusive upgrades you can toggle in the field? I thought at some point they were doing a Diablo-style random item generation deal? War Gear, and all that?

That might be the difference between single player and multiplayer. I could be mistaken, but I believe it is the Diablo style loot hunt in single player; mutually exclusive gear in multi.

That would not be inline with the TT IP, so I really doubt it. In the IP equipment is very regimented - you pick from a preset list of possible ugrades. The IP has only moved more this way with time. Armies like Chaos, for example, used to be fairly customizeable within the bounds of several preset options you could mix and match. Now everything is "pick 1 from list A, and pick 1 from list B". They dumbed it down, IMO, for the kiddies and the stupid. It's ok I guess, I just use to like that one or two of their like 11 armies weren't cut and paste...

I don't know about 4E, but you're clearly talking about 2E. And let's be honest, that was the ONLY good thing about 2E. All the changes that went into 3E were fantastic, IMO, and I'm not just saying that because I'm still stuck in that era and haven't upgraded at all in over 6 years.

New Trailer showing Enemies of the Imperium. And now Amazon has it listed for pre-order, with a release date of Feb 23rd!

Edit: Pre-ordered this in record time. Can't wait, i think i might have a PC upgrade in my future to get the most of this.

Oh wow, that looks absolutely fantastic.

I can't wait for this.

After Company of Heroes, I just can't find anything that scratches the RTS itch quite the same way. I grabbed Red Alert 3 and while it is great fun, and is somewhat of a breath of fresh air, I don't see the multiplayer being near as long lasting. It is going to be great to sit down and have another amazing RTS to play. A change of scenery from the WW2 will be just what I need.

I have the same problem. The cool thing is that the COH expansion will also be out next year to bring us back to WW2 when we need a change of scenery from fighting alien races in DOW 2 and SC2.

Is it wrong of me to hope that DoW2 is a much better game than SC2?

It's never wrong of you to hope a game is good.

No, and if it lives up to Company of Heroes level of tactics, I expect it to be. It will just be a little rougher around the edges then the extreme level of polish all Blizzard games get.

I look forward to both SC2 and DoW2, expecting very different and compelling gaming experiences. DoW and CoH fill a different gaming desire than games like SC2.

My personal hope is that they amp up the voice acting for unit response in DoW. It was such a subtle effect but I've many of the unit response lines memorized. When the Space Marines charged in it sounded as though they believed in the Immortal God Emperor and the Khorne Berserkers truly represented Chaos.

I completely agree with you Reaper. I will just keep clicking the grey knights to hear them say " The Ordos Malleus has sent us to aid you."

Huh. The recommended specs are lower than I'd expected - not that I'm complaining!

Also, the Tyranid in that trailer jonnypolite linked was hawt.

Not bad specs, hopefully the days of machine killing games are behind us, for a while at least.

I know what I'm doing from February 24th...

'Ere we go, 'ere we go, 'ere we go!

I cannot believe I am going to say this but.....but.......I won't be able to play it when it comes out

I start my next experiment at the beginning of March and won't have any time to play it until after it is done....4 weeks later.

That's my take on it, too. CoH has so far been the height of my RTS experience. It has permanently altered what I want from an RTS. I'm far more excited for DoW2 than I am for SC2, though I fully plan to sink tons of hours into both.

Damn, now i wish i'd bought Soulstorm as well as the Platinum pack in that Steam sale.

Dawn of War 2 beta starts January 21 for Soulstorm owners, Jan 28 for everyone else.

That's the first time I've ever been glad that I bought Soulstorm.

I agree with this. I am -not- a fan of the SC style of RTS at all, but the CoH style RTS is wonderful.

One of the Euro PC Gamers says the game has gone gold and it got a 90% review score, as if that mattered.

I'm confused. Was this a wrong thread post? We are talking about game that has a beta coming out at the end of this month.

But like most Betas in today's world, it is more than likely little more than a glorified demo seeing as I believe the game is set to release in February. I wouldn't surprise me if they already have build out to reviewers.

Very reasonable specs. It makes me happy inside that my old computer died now, because my new one, while not all that expensive, easily meets the recommended stuff.

The Radeon 4850 has Shader Model 3, right?

I was confused at that too but that's what the article at Relic News says.
