Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Water Lilies - A French film about the sexual awakenings of three 15-year old Paris girls over the course of a summer.

It's worth it just to make the bear appear.

Let me clarify. I still love the animation. The story itself hasn't aged well as it is such an abridged version from the book that I loved. I filled in quite a few holes and such when I was a kid, and didn't mind them then. If I remove the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia though, the plot is pretty thin, and quite a few things are not really explained.

The scene with the Great owl makes up for most of that though.

Oh yeah agreed, they basically get to the last 10 minutes and the amulet takes care of everything all deus ex machina style. But I think almost everything else about the movie is really amazingly unique and it's a shame they don't make movies like it anymore.

I haven't had a single issue on the XBOX with the Netflix steaming...I have a very fast cable modem though so that could be why.

I love Weeds season 1 & 2....The Day the Earth Stood Still, King Corn, Gonzo, and if you haven't seen "The Diving Bell and the Butterly" you need to watch it right now. Its in french but it might be the most beautiful movie I've ever seen.

My 2 year old daughter just jumped on the NIMH bandwagon. My mother bought the movie for her. The Wal-Mart $5 is pan and scan 4:3. At least Netflix makes use of the widescreen (it doesn't look stretched, either), plus when we stop it, it's easier to pick back up the next day instead of trying to find the chapter on the disc.

I really dislike Netflix's "Watch Instantly" feature. It is poorly implemented, and the selection is just terrible. I couldn't watch anything without it messing up 2-3 times while watching something, which made it necessary for me to close down IE (convert to FF, backwards jackasses) and reload the movie. When I want to watch movies online, I'll check out Hulu. Sure, the selection may not be as large, but it works better and it is free. I

Get thee a Roku. Or get thee the IE Tab add on so you can watch in FF.

Tried the IE tab with FF, but it still messed up.

If you like "thinky" science fiction, The Man from Earth is pretty good.

Watched and loved "Scratch" last weekend. If you are into turntablism or hip-hop at all its well worth checking out and seeing the DJs at work and hearing their stories. It's really a unique look at that entire culture, where it came from and what happened to the people on the forefront of it.

I started watching "Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride" last night and its an interesting look at writer Hunter S. Thompson, how he thought and wrote and what experiences his friends shared with him. Can't wait to finish it tonight and would recommend it.

If you like history, the madness of king charles and medal of honor are 2 good ones I found.

While I'm here, what is the base subscription you need to make this work? Unlimited 2 at a time or unlimited 1 at a time?

Unlimited 1 at a time or better. The 1 at a time (2/month) does not include instant watch or instant watch ready devices.

Madness of King Charles? Don't you mean King George?

We've started watching Jeremiah -- a Showtime series from 2002 written by JMS (of Babylon 5 fame). Only a couple of episodes in and already really loving it...

The "Evening with Kevin Smith" videos are good, and video quality is pretty much irrelevant:

Yeah, I always f*ck that up. George.

Although they might have one out for that jug-eared inbred tool Chuck.

It's George. And it is an awesome show, I also am waiting anxiously for the movie.

The wife and I watched season 1 of Jehrico, and started on season 2 this weekend. What a great show.

I have some really bad news for you, then...

Watched Real Genius weekend before last. That was pretty good, I hadn't seen it in probably 20 years. It wasn't in French, though...

Forbidden Planet was surprisingly good. It took a while to get in just the right frame of mind (I kept wishing for MST3K...), but it was certainly enjoyable.

That was surprisingly enjoyable. I liked the "twist" they through in at the end.

Sukiyaki Western Django is available to my surprise. For those who don't know, it's Takashi Miike's spaghetti western. Quentin Tarintino managed to schmooze his way into getting a part in it even.

Found out that Netflix upgraded the Roku firmware to support HD programming this week. They recommend at least 5 mbps down, but I was able to watch an HD movie without any problems with my dinky 3.5 mbps DSL connection. I thought the picture quality was very good. Their current selection of HD programming, however, is not. All in all, it's a nice addition and I'm sure they'll be buffing out the HD content soon enough.

There are also a lot of fun B-movies, specifically those from Troma. Tromio and Juliet, Toxic Avenger, Buttcrack

Just to deviate a little bit from the topic, for those that don't have a 360, you can buy a piece of software called Playon (http://www.themediamall.com/playon) that will act as a media server (like TVersity) and supports streaming content including Hulu and Netflix. This also is a way to get Hulu on the 360. If you have a Tivo, netflix now works on the Tivo if you get the latest software update.

To address the topic, I don't have netflix. I use blockbuster online, but the streaming service almost has me switching. Dead Like Me is a great show. I watched it a bit when I had Showtime (or was it on HBO) but haven't seen it since I cancelled the premium channels.

Strange Brew is on it. But you guys knew that, hopefully.
