Recommend an old white guy some Hip-Hop.

Awesome thread.

I'm partial to oldschool. Circa late 80's, early 90's. Most already mentioned. Few more I could add:

Links to YouTube clips

Digable Planets
Main Source - Their album 'Breaking Atoms' is one of my all time favs.
Poor Righteous Teachers
Jeru the Damaja
Divine Styler
Del the Funky Homosapien
D-Nice - man his title track used to get me amped
Brand Nubian
Onyx - I'm a bald head with a knife, I want your money or your life, so...sO...So...SOOO
Paris - His album The Devil Made Me Do It will melt your face off.
Gang Starr
Das EFX
Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs

Oh yeah, and tune into We Funk Internet Radio...it's amazing.

El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
The first listen-through I wasn't convinced, but it has earned heavy rotation in my library.

Which MF Doom record should I get first? I just checked out a couple of tunes on youtube and he's crazy good.

Special Blends Vol 1 + 2.

k-os is a canadian artist I'm really surprised no one here has mentioned. Definitely worth checking out.

I'll list some more of my favorites when I have time to look through my library.

Oh yeah. e-Music is responsible for the addition of hundreds of new tracks to my music collection. They're great if you're looking for indie stuff.

Get Madvillain: Madvillainy if you haven't got it already. And the some of the Four Tet and Koushik remix collections are amazing.

Nice to see this thread revived! Some of the stuff I've found since the original post:

Black Sheep: 8WM/NOVAKANE--digital-only release by former Native Tongues Posse affiliates. Really excellent.
The Cool Kids: The Bake Sale--I don't care if it's basically one big gimmick, I love this album.
Dessa: False Hopes LP--smart, talented female poet/rapper, part of Minneapolis' Doomtree collective.
Doomtree: Doomtree--recent debut album from the collective. Mixed bag, but often brilliant. Check out "Dots and Dashes."
Edan: Beauty and the Beat--eclectic, funny, and slightly wacked-out .
Jehst: Falling Down--British, tends to drone monotone, but lyrically stellar.
Jehst: The Mengi Bus Mixtape--21 tracks, a few of which are excellent.
Ohmega Watts: The Find--upbeat, brilliantly produced, lounged-out grooves.
Ohmega Watts: Watts Happening--more of the same, thankfully.
Siah and Yeshua DapoED: The Visualz Anthology--Pure awesome. One of the best albums I've ever downloaded.
Stacy Epps: Ruff Draft--experimental soul/hip-hop.
What's the Science: Elevation--Smart, smooth Lil 'Sci teams up with Carlos Nino. Sometimes abstract, often awesome.

Almost all of which are available on emusic.

I'm looking forward to checking out some of the more recent recommendations.

People have already mentioned the Hip Hop artists I'd have suggested, so I'll throw out a Trip Hop album instead: Blunted, the Edinburgh Project. Good stuff if you like downtempo Hip Hop.

You'll find that he goes by several aliases.
Madvillain - Madvillainy is the best intro. After that, I'd pick up Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain.
He also did a collaboration with DangerMouse (of Gnarls Barkley) called Danger Doom, but it didn't quite live up to the pedigree.

Make sure you check out the underground Philly hip-hop scene.. probably right now the best in the world. Start with Jedi Mind Tricks and various affiliates.. Hours and hours of awesome hip-hop.

From them you'll get connected to stuff from Apathy, Celph Titled (and other Tampa underground artists), La Coka Nostra etc..

While some may not consider it "hip-hop", acid jazz is one of my personal favorite genres. US3, DJ Krush, Digable Planets, Count Basic, and Azymuth are a few standouts.

Get Fresh Produce by Fink if you haven't already. None of his later stuff though, because he decided to start playing acoustic guitar songs instead. What?

I think starting from the beginning with Doomsday works. His style was a bit more conventional but still quirky (does that even make sense?). After that the albums get weirder - I'd go with Viktor Vaughn: Vaudeville Villian

Second, and I mentioned this in the "Random Things" thread, "The Renaissance" by Q-Tip came out (you may remember him from seminary old-school group A Tribe Called Quest) and it's just insanely good. "Getting Up" has a single failing, that it's too short for such a awesome song.

I picked this album up after seeing it recommended here. I've always liked A Tribe Called Quest, so I was curious to hear what Q-Tip is up to these days.

What a fantastic album. Q-Tip really went back to his old-school roots on this one.

It's kind of jazzy / kind of hip hopy (not so much)..... Erykah Badu. I can't get enough of this artist. So f*cking great.

Great song, what a strange video though *lawls*.

tOW, Go tell Tyrone is one of my favorite songs. The live version just makes me laugh every time.

I might get some flak for these as not being true Hip-Hop, but:

Flobots (if you don't mind politics in your musak)
Gorillaz
Cat Empire (awesome blend of jazz and rap)
EDIT: The more I think about, the more I wonder why I even called Cat Empire Hip-Hop at all. Still excellent though, and worth a spin.

This great thread needs to be revived!

Just.. like.. music

I skimmed the thread so this may be in there already, but listen to Dälek if you haven't yet.

I will breathe life into this thread by submitting samples from the new JadaKiss album - The Last Kiss...The whole album is fire!

Can't Stop Me

Right by my side

Something Else

Pain and Torture (**NSFW**)

I don't believe i've suggested him already so, if you haven't heard Durrty Goodz, i'd definitely check his stuff out. If you can pick up or nefariously acquire his first EP, Axiom. His newest album, Ultrasound is also available on iTunes. The best hip-hop out of the UK, easily.

Tor and Sufjan Stevens - Illinoize

It is entirely shameful that this thread has lasted four pages without anyone mentioning Optimus Rhyme.

Also, most of you seem to be mentioning roughly the same type of hip hop so I thought I would present some more unique stuff:

I like Buck 65 but I think that Astronautalis does that whole shtick better.

I would be remiss not to mention the dynamic duo of Radioinactive and Busdriver.

Captain Dan & The Scurvy Crew. Pirate-themed hip hop. Enough said.

About three months from being the next big thing is the intelligent hip hop duo of Dan LeSac Vs. Scroobius Pip.

Currently topping my list of faves among the nerdcore scene is Kabuto The Python. (you can get his free remixed ep at that link)

And last but not least, is Subtle, an experimental hip hop band fronted by the almighty Doseone which is as ambitious as it is hard to describe.

Diego Bernal - For Corners is a fun new joint that's out.

K'Naan can be reasonably referred to as the Somalian Wyclef Jean, although whether or not you think that's good is up to you.

Mos Def has a new album. Not great, but fun, way better than his last two.

Did I mention Little Brother and the album "Get Back"? Because holy hell that's a good album. Even without 9th Wonder doing the beats. See if you can find "That Ain't Love" and try not bopping your head. Actually, all three of the last tracks ("That Ain't Love", "Dreams", "When Everything Is New") are fantastic.

EDIT:

Arise!!

Check out Soul Assassins latest EP then embark down listening to Sick Jacken and Fashawn

As well as Snow Goons latest EP.

ARISE!

Big Boi's leaked almost all the tracks from the new album already, but if you haven't yet, give "Shine Blockaz" a listen, it is choice material.

I've never been a fan of hip-hop or rap stuff but in the past couple months I've found myself really into a sort of ambient Hip-Hop type thing (not really sure what to call it)
Here's an example of what I mean:

Anyone know of some stuff similar to this?
