No way. It is unstoppable. In Gears 1, when you got shot, the chainsaw lowered. You can't run at someone with a revving chainsaw from the front and expect to pull it off. It was never meant to be so powerful. It's suppose to be a lucky kill. Now, we have constant chainsaw rushes. I've seen it. It sucks. In the total amount of time I've spent playing Gears 2, I've only been able to lower someone else's chainsaw ONCE. That's it. Shotgun doesn't work. Lancer doesn't work. Melee's work half the time.

You still stop the chainsaw with bullets - it just takes more than 1 - unlike Gears 1 where 1 bullet would lower the chainsaw. Hip fire lancer works for me the majority of the time. However, yes, the chainsaw is used more now. Most people I know love it when a king of the hill spot devolves into a pile of gibs. I mean, the damn lancer w/ chainsaw is iconic to Gears. People want to see it used, and often. Maybe Gears 2 appeals to a more casual crowd, or a crowd that didn't like Gears 1 multi for the opposite reasons of why you dislike Gears 2. It seems "I need more chainsaw" was their battlecry, and most people are "ooh" "ahh" and "rofl" on the mic all night long as the chainsaw kills stack up. I know many of the reasons I avoided Gears 1 multi (except to be the occasional bodybag stuffing on a Gears w/Beers night just to be social) was because of the reasons mentioned. I really couldn't stand Gears 1, and Gears 2 is a blast.

Using the chainsaw in Gears 1 took skill. That's the bottom line. It was very easy to rev it and run around. But to pull off a kill, you needed to be patient, learn timing and understand the risks. When someone went for a chainsaw kill and was caught, they died.

You enjoy the chainsaw now because everyone can use it without a problem. It takes absolutely no effort to chainsaw opponents in Gears 2.

Very true about how much easier it is to use now. The big difference now is that if you use the chainsaw recklessly, you will pay for it with your life. Someone else in this thread summed it up best: Chainsaw is the new shotgun, Shotgun is the new Lancer, Lancer is now useful for anyone who isn't hosting.

Gears of War 2

I win some
I lose some
I have fun either way

Win.

So true because now we have "chainsaw chains." I chainsaw you, someone chainsaws me, someone else chainsaws the guy who chainsawed me, someone else chainsaws the guy who chainsawed the guy who chainsawed me, etc.

It was I, the Chainsaw Queen.

All that said, I can't wait for the incoming patch.

Heard anything about it? I want universal voice after a round, faster lowering of chainsaw from bullets, and optional drop to first lobby.

No, but they'll have to be one to fix any post-launch problems. That shield bug has got to go pronto. Hopefully, they are also able to fix the slow matchmaking too. I'd also like a "Ready" icon, stationary weapons (no more torque bow for COG team only) and the ability to detonate wall-mounted grenades with gunfire.

You guys mind taking your public MP complaints elsewhere? This thread is the thread for asking WHO'S IN TONIGHT? I'm picking up more booze on the way home.

I'm going to try to make Horde if you guys are talking about 9PM central time. GT: Turls.

I'd like to get in on this, too. I've already done it once, but had a great time...

BTW, did we confirm this was 10 pm EST or left coast time?

I'm hoping East Coast, otherwise I'm out until 9:30 or so EST.

I'm hopeful to get on tonight, as well. Depends on the wife. I may not be on until 11pm CST, or so. I really loves me some Horde with Goodjers.

10 EST for me.

I haven't slept today (pulled an all-nighter on a critical project), so I may not last much longer byond midnight in my TZ

I'll be on, and in particular on earlier than last night (9 or 10 EST), so perhaps I'll actually get into a game or two. Certainly wouldn't mind doing some Horde, since I haven't had a chance to play it with a full group yet.

Let's hear more talk about what's wrong with Gears 2 multiplayer.

It makes waiting for the SOCOM patches a little less painful.

Sorry, it's not that broke.

I will be putting a game up tonight at 8pm EST. If some of you want to take off for the 10pm EST horde with whoever is hosting that, cool, come early and play regular MP. By 10pm EST we should have ample people online - however 8pm-9pm-ish EST is a little sparce (so come early!) We'll do the usual - rotate game types, maps, etc.

I put up Steam events for both my MP game at 8pm and Gorilla800lbs's Hoarde event at 10pm

Here is what I did:

Tivo + Xbox 360 VGA cable attached to computer monitor + headphones = Play when you want. Watch when you want.

Your welcome.

Yup, that's what I do too. Works like a charm, except in heavy bouts of Warzone, when I have a tendency to either cackle hysterically or yell obscenities when I get chopped in half

My problem with shotgun vs. chainsaw is that it is slightly bugged. If you blast a guy with his chainsaw going you don't always get him to lower it 100%. It really sucks when I do my shotgun melee combo only to run into his still revving chainsaw.

Yeah, I want the chainsaw to be more effective, but it also needs to fully unrev when you're hit by anything signifigant (2-3 bullets, shotgun blast, etc). I don't want the Gears 1 system back (this is just so much fun) but I'm afraid that's probably what we'll end up with. Epic has a bad habit of listening to forum posters and not just developing the patches to fix bugs.

I don't know about the overpowered chainsaw too much. The public games still seem to be shotgun centered. And most of those guys have found a way to make every shot a 1 shot kill

I really didn't want the game to turn back into a shotgun frenzy

Yep. I picked that nick back when I loooooved that movie and since then I've been too lazy to try and find some other nick so it kinda stuck

Count me in. I played Gears for the first time in earnest today. What a fun game. Who knew?

Yo Gorilla,

Sorry for the confusion/drop last night. I hope your hoarding was good!

Well, I didn't have much of a good time. Kept getting stuck with incompetent people in the two games I tried. Haven't even gotten to Wave 15 in either case.

Yourself, though, I saw that you were on Wave 20 when I left. Manson map really really blows in Horde mode (lost of places for the Locust to get lost in, so it slows things down a lot), but I hope you had a good time.

Take the top of the stairs except for a piece of bait downstairs with a shield. I was in a group that did that and we got through all 50 levels even though we only had 4 people after 26 or so.

Can someone edumacate me on horde mode, please? So for each wave is there a particular quantity of baddies that pop out or is the wave time-based? If it's quantity oriented it seems I've been approaching it wrong. The seemingly more appropriate way to handle things is to blast the majority of grubs, leave at least one not-too-dangerous one alive and then allow everyone to stock up on ammo before capping that last guy. My problem -- well, among my problems -- is that I'm constantly low on ammo and have to try to scrounge some at the beginning of waves which often leaves me in a pickle.

Thanks for the invites last night. I was teaching a friend the Gospel of Gears via horde mode.

Even with all the complaints, I'm still no good with the chainsaw. I'm getting better at the fancier weapons, though.

There are certain types in certain quantities of Locust that get created in each wave. E.g., every *5 wave is an onslaught of Maulers, and every *10 wave brings a bunch of Beast Riders. I think.

Within each wave the new Locust is spawned in batches as you kill them. I guess it's done in order to keep the number of Locust on the field within manageable limits.

There is a red progress bar in the upper left corner of the screen that measures how many Locust are remaining to be killed in the wave. As this number gets down to single digits, it gets replaced with an actual number. It makes it easy to plan the ammo-ups -- leave last 2 Locust wandering around (unless they're priests who'd start resurrecting other Locust) and grab some ammo.

This needs to be coordinated properly. Teams need to stick together because past wave 20 or so, there is simply not enough firepower in one individual Gear to stick out in the open on his own anymore. Teammembers need to keep each other updated on their ammo and heavy-weapons runs. There must be a willingness to share the heavy weapons and ammo boxes.

My both games last night were lost because some dumbass will be out in the field trying to grab the mortar while the action is still thick. The dumbass gets killed, and one or two more people get killed also while trying to revive him. Or, the team is dispersed all over the field doing the ammo-ups at the end of the level, and a dumbass rubs out the last standing Locust without giving anyone a heads-up. Mulchers, Boomies, and priests pour in, and you need to decide whether to die holed up alone or die making a desperate roadie run.

It's so much like Left 4 Dead, in effect. Except you can chainsaw the baddies and stomp on their faces.
