Gears & Beers Fridays

Mad fun Saturday night. Thanks to everyone except Certis. It stopped being fun after the 8th chainsaw at your hands (I kid, it was the 10th that made me mad). Meatflag was especially fun, doubly so because the bot had more kills than anyone.

Yep - first timers never fully understand the full power of the Meatflag. The worst is when he executes you - it's like the icing on the "I just got killed by a civillian bot" suck cake.

I just posted this on Steam:

"Why the hell not?" Shoal07 on XBL (also found via GWJ Gears Clan) will host a private (8 person) match starting at 8pm EST - for at least 2 hours - come join the slaughter! Just join in (no need for an invite from me, you can jump right in if we're not full).

So, uh, show up!

If only my wife didn't have the tv at that time (stupid reality shows).

I'll be there stinking it up! Case in point fumbling with my quick change so i go from hammerburst to grenade to pistol before finally getting the shotgun while hiding behind a guy. Good thing he didn't turn around.

Stupid school getting in the way of my fun.

Submission needs to be renamed to c*ck Tease.

Also, am I the only one who has trouble jumping up from the train tracks? Every time I try it just makes my character tumble to the side. Very annoying.

You have to take cover on the ledge, find a spot without sandbags, then press A again to vault over. This also works only half the time. I hate that map with a passion.

I think you have to let off of "A" before pressing it again to vault. The amount of time you need to wait depends on lag.

Yup. When you take cover on the ledge, you have to wait for about 2 seconds before you can successfully climb out of the train tracks. Otherwise, you roll. The train comes. You go splat.

After playing three hours of ranked Gears 2....Can we PLEASE go back to Gears 1?

That's a good question - I really feel Gears2 is better in every way - and not broken either (Gears1 multi had... multiple problems).

Look, I was enjoying the scenery. The sights and sounds of a decimated city in autumn just makes my heart go pitter-patter. Until you stopped it with the shotgun.

Anyone looking to play tonight?

I am looking for a band of determined fellows to go to the Wave 50 in Horde mode with me. Will be online ~10pm-ish.

PST?

NM saw your location.

Considering I will be out of the loop weds and thurs - I might be up for doing another round tonight. Again, my wife works late, so that works well in my gaming favor.

That's a good question - I really feel Gears2 is better in every way - and not broken either (Gears1 multi had... multiple problems).

Lets see.

-Smoke Grenade fest.
Almost every map started with a minimum of 5 grenades thrown. It went something like this..Get knocked down, get up...Get knocked down again, get up again. Get knocked down, get up, Get knocked down AGAIN, get stuck in map. Rinse, repeat

-Poor map design on the new maps.
Jacinto sticks out in my mind the worst. The place where the nades spawn there's only one way in. With the ability to stick nades to the walls now it was basically a death trap once someone is holed up in there. We almost always had to send a sacrificial lamb in first to blow the nades up with his body so the rest of us could advance.

-No map cycles.
Oh look we get a choice to vote between Jacinto and Avalance for the 4th time in a hour, yay. Seriously, if you're gonna take away the ability for a host in a public match to pick maps (aka Halo matchmaking) at least give me some f*cking variety.

-No way to specifically choose the game type you want to play in matchmaking.
No, I don't wanna play Guardian. No, I don't want to play Execution. I just want to play some f*cking Warzone, is that too much to ask?

-Weak ass lancer.
There was a point last night were Atlas and myself dumped both our clips into a guy picking up the torque bow only to have him walk away like nothing happened.

-Chainsaw near impossible to stop.
Enough said.

-Lobby hell.
I can understand the need for this in matchmaking, but private matches? Really? Remember when we had map cycles and we just magically went to the next map after every round?

-Poor host picking in matchmaking.
If XBL is supposedly picking the best connection out of ten players, then juding by last night 90% of the world is still on f*cking dial up. Nine out of ten matches last night were lag fests that made things almost impossible to hit. Well, all expect for that one guy who was always one shotting people with his shotgun..gee makes it really hard to tell who's hosting.

-Glitches and cheats.
There's already a glitch that allows you to pick up the shield then basically make it go invisible to that you can switch to whatever weapon you want instead of being stuck with a pistol. So even though you see a guy with a shotgun and no shield, the game still thinks he's holding the shield and protects him. Seriously did the bug testers sleep through multiplayer play sessions?

-No talking between rounds to the dead players.
Yes I just got an awesome shot on you and yes I would like to talk sh*t and rub it in your face...why can't I do this anymore.

I like that the smoke grenade has a function now. I know some don't. I haven't been hit more than 2x in a row after many, many hours of mp, and I don't see the situation you're describing happening.

I disagree. I like the new maps. They all seem to have more approaches than the old ones. Jacinto is more like a Gears1 map than many of the others (i.e. it funnels you to spots) but it still has several approaches.

Haven't seen this as a problem (or noticed what you're describing). I see cycles all the time. It even automatically cycles in the old maps when everyone has them. That's nice.

Gumbie wrote:

Yes, you can pick the game type, before you go looking for a match.

Gumbie wrote:

Eh - I don't see it. 3/4 of a clip easily drops anyone, and 1/3-1/2 if it's one I've speed loaded, or whatever its called. And I use the lancer all the time. Lancer or shotty, that's about all I use in mp. Except on river, then I like to snipe.

Gumbie wrote:

I disagree - it's easier to chainsaw someone, but a shooting a lancer at a guy tring to chainsaw you = lancer win. Shotgun vs Chainsaw seems, to me, to be more 50/50 - the chainsaw still has a chance to connect, but the shotty can one-shot kill. I've dance to a two-shot then melee win several times against someone with a chainsaw. I remember in Gears 1 never being able to land a chainsaw kill. That was irritating.

Gumbie wrote:

Ok, the public matching system sucks. You win this one. Hopefully they patch it.

Yes, I have seen lag. However, I have seen it rarely, and nothing compared to what you're claiming.

I have not seen any of these myself, but I don't doubt they exist. Hopefully they get patched out.

Yep, I agree.

There's other things I like too. There's no "uber weapon" that everyone wants to use every round. Wingman is an awesome new game-type. The other game types are unique and fun enough that they all want to be played, not just warzone. Maybe you need to pal around with some goodjers - are the pubies gettin you down? I know if I didn't play private matches I wouldn't play - all because the public matching system sucks. It's so broken that I refuse to suffer through it. When I play private matchs (and thus eliminate the matchmaking system entirely) I really enjoy Gears 2 mp.

Can you please point out where I can specially search for a Warzone match type in public matchmaking? The last time I looked it was called "Elimination" and it consisted of Guardian, Execution, or Warzone.

Gumbie wrote:

Yes, you're right - I haven't played pub in long enough that I forgot. Yeah, that's not a perfect solution. It's almost like they were planning to have less people on then they do, so they had to combine groups to keep games matching and moving quickly. Or maybe they're on crack - hard to tell.

Forgot to mention the weapon cycling. Good idea in theory, not so much in their execution. Last night on Subway we were on the locust side. On the first round we spawned on the top and the top power weapon was a sniper. The COG proceeded to grab the torque (downstairs at their spawn) and destroy our team with it. The next match we spawn downstairs and guess what?! The torque is now a mulcher, and the sniper rifle that was at the top is now a....TA DA torque bow. So our team got stuck in an endless cycle of mulcher, sniper. While the other team had torque and torque. I don't really have a problem with the sniper but I don't know about you, but I'll take the torque any day over the mulcher on Subway.

I have. It happens all the time on game types like King of the Hill & Submission. On certain maps like Grid Lock, the smoke flies once you get to the sniper point.

Honestly, if they wanted to change the smoke grenades like this, then players shouldn't spawn with them.

Either let us choose the maps specifically or go back to the way Gears 1 did it. I don't understand why that's so hard. Playing the same map again for the fourth time is annoying.

No way. It is unstoppable. In Gears 1, when you got shot, the chainsaw lowered. You can't run at someone with a revving chainsaw from the front and expect to pull it off. It was never meant to be so powerful. It's suppose to be a lucky kill. Now, we have constant chainsaw rushes. I've seen it. It sucks. In the total amount of time I've spent playing Gears 2, I've only been able to lower someone else's chainsaw ONCE. That's it. Shotgun doesn't work. Lancer doesn't work. Melee's work half the time.

You obviously don't like Gears2, I understand that. You're going to find every little thing to hate about it, I'm not going to defend them all (like how you can turn off weapon cycling). Gears 1 has all sorts of major problems (host advantage, weapon imbalances, etc) that I can't get over.

I am with gumbie I can not see anyway gears2 is better when it comes to mp.

Host advantage is alive and well in gears 2 just hid better.

I don't know, from what I've played, the games are nearly identical in all respects.

You still stop the chainsaw with bullets - it just takes more than 1 - unlike Gears 1 where 1 bullet would lower the chainsaw. Hip fire lancer works for me the majority of the time. However, yes, the chainsaw is used more now. Most people I know love it when a king of the hill spot devolves into a pile of gibs. I mean, the damn lancer w/ chainsaw is iconic to Gears. People want to see it used, and often. Maybe Gears 2 appeals to a more casual crowd, or a crowd that didn't like Gears 1 multi for the opposite reasons of why you dislike Gears 2. It seems "I need more chainsaw" was their battlecry, and most people are "ooh" "ahh" and "rofl" on the mic all night long as the chainsaw kills stack up. I know many of the reasons I avoided Gears 1 multi (except to be the occasional bodybag stuffing on a Gears w/Beers night just to be social) was because of the reasons mentioned. I really couldn't stand Gears 1, and Gears 2 is a blast.

Shoal07 wrote:

You should check your facts before you try to make me look stupid. You can't turn off weapon cycling in public match making. You really have to spend time in public match making to understand my gripes a little bit better. Things are much nicer in our private GWJ matches, but when you get out into the asshole world of XBL...the annoying/buggy things about Gears 2 rear their ugly head a whole lot more.
