Star Trek 2009 movie Catch-All (Now on DVD/Blu-Ray and sequel rumors)

Ain't it Cool has another pick, this time from the movie. Now this is more like it!

Edit: More images! See a random starship get its ass kicked. View for the first time the whole crew plus Eric Bana as the film's villain.

Double edit: MTV has the first shot of the bridge. Can you say Galaxy Quest?

Sweet lord....that does look like the Galaxy Quest set. I think looking at that bridge pic just made me a little nauseous. And why do all the actors look completely fake in these shots. Even the ones that are playing frickin' humans look like they spent a few hours in a makeup chair having hair pieces slapped on and getting their bodies airbrushed into a soft, fuzzy glow.

The crew and uniforms look great. Bridge looks like crap. Deciding factor for me will be how the Enterprise looks.

Apparently we're finally on the verge of getting some of the goods on the film, as Entertainment Weekly is doing a cover story on it, complete with a pic of the two leads. I'm...uncertain about it.

Oh, god I hope that pic isn't post-coitus.

Yeah, the bridge may not be as faithful to the original, but to be honest, we have to consider that our technology has advanced past the point that some of the computer technology (mind you, not the space travel technology) has advanced well past what the original Enterprise was capable of. I think an update is warranted.

Here is the dilemma I think that Star Trek fans are going to face. The Technology that was show cased in the original Star Trek was limited by real life technology and budget. So are we expecting to see something that is even less advanced than what we saw in Star Trek? Are we looking for something that is close to Enterprise the last Star Trek series? Or should we expect to see something akin to Star Trek TNG? I think everyone has different things they want to see as far as technology and how it looks and behaves. So, I'm not going to go in with expectations and will just hope it all flows together. Someone has to set a new standard and it's never easy to do that when you know the fans are going to tear it apart nanotech by nanotech.

I'm still wondering why Kirk is in a dark sweater. Did he come to the enterprise directly from a club in NYC?

I forget where I saw this, but they claim that this is the "Captain's uniform," and that it's different for a reason. What the reason is, is still a mystery, but it is apparently explained in the film.

I hate that bridge... I sorta get what they were trying to do but man, that looks horrible. And I think it boils down to three things... The excessive use of canister lighting, the standing workstation area, the circuitry pattern on everything and BLUE. Someone went way too far on the blue colorizations.

I am terrified of what the ship itself could look like now... J.J. please be gentle with her, you promised!

Yeah I don't care about making it look updated. It just doesn't look like a Star Trek bridge at all. Oh well, still have high hopes.

Why do I get a strong High School Musical 4: In Space! vibe off of those pictures? I haven't been following the development. Is it supposed to be a campy, nostalgic romp?

Is the reason because only hipsters and art school dropouts can command starships?

I thought he was just wearing his jumpsuit without the yellow shirt. Shatner did it a few times in the original show.

Here's the EW article.

This looks terribad.

Though 90210 in space would be kinda funny at least.. plus you could have hotties in mini-skirts and push up bras

Except for the shot of Sylar trying to kill Kirk to get his powers .....err Spock trying to teach Kirk the Vulcan Heimlich, I don't see any big problems with the photos. The bridge had to be updated. The had a freaking flip analog clock in the original! We have gotten a bit past that. The rest of the shots are just the crew, bad guy and stuff blowing up.

I am excited for it personally.

Article was good, I like the design of the new bridge. Again, I think this will be a good movie for sci-fi fans but it may never satisfy hard core Trek fans.

I remember going to one of the TNG Trek movies in the 90s and some dude near me was talking through the whole thing about how "Data wouldn't say that", etc.

I hate J.J. Abrams.
I hate when people milk Trek for money.
I hate it when people remake things just to "freshen it up".

But, I'm going to give this Trek movie a shot. Mostly because I've seen what Paramount and Berman did to the franchise overall. I'm not a fan on TNG and I feel like they got punched in the nuts more than any other Trek series. No matter how slim of a shot this movie has of being good, I'll still take it.

I see short skirts. I see a smug captain who might pull off some crazy cowboy sh*t. I see an intense Spock. I see a set that isn't a cave. Those are good things.

Worse case scenario, I go back to watching ToS on TV and go through years of therapy like I did for Nemesis. *shiver*

Article was good, made me feel a bit better. I am a bit confused by the design though. The teaser trailer with the welder guy and some little spy shots of sets and props made it look like they were going for a BSG-type gritty design, which I was pretty excited for. Though these shots make it look the exact opposite, super futuristic, clean iPod design. I hope the aesthetic of the flim isn't jarring between the two styles. I really love the uniforms though, they took the originals and made them look cool! The crew has the right look, I think the guy they got playing Kirk fits the part nicely. Spock looks a bit too Sylar, though.

Exactly. I can't see how anyone could have watched Nemesis and be disappointed by the current shots. Nothing could be as bad as Nemesis.

I really really hope they go with a cleaner, iPod, super futuristic design. Gene Roddenberry's original vision of TOS was a better future where the problems which were on everyone's mind at the time were solved. No war, poverty, disease, etc. It is fine that BSG has a different focus but the focus of Star Trek was meant to be about a better humanity. The clean design highlights that.

Oh and can Sylar look like anything else? It is like watching Lord of the Rings and seeing Agent Smith leading the elves. Some people nail a certain roll and it can't be undone.

Yeah, it's not like anyone associated with Star Trek has ever been typecast before.

Who the hell is Chris Pine and why does he look like an uber-douche?

My first thought exactly...

didn't they pay Sylar enough to actually cut his hair like Spock? Every picture looks like a wig. Why would you do that??

Uniforms are nice, set: hmph. I think a cleverer designer could've updated TOS sets to reflect actual technology and still leave one's retinae intact.
I thought the point was to show Kirk when he was LESS cocky.
I'll still line up to see it, and probably enjoy it even if I complain to high heaven afterward.

Kirk was always cocky. Kobayashi Maru.

Yep. The only difference was apparently that he wasn't a womanizer in the academy, and was studious.

So it's after he left the academy that his true colors shined through and he started picking up women. Perhaps there is a possibility of a weird twist that he was spurn by a woman and vowed never to have another serious relationship and so became a womanizer which later he may have worked through and eventually married. According to the James T. Kirk Wiki the following says he got married a few times or at least a couple depending on which cannon timeline you want to follow.

Kirk is a widower, having been married in "The Paradise Syndrome" to Miramanee (Sabrina Scharf), who dies carrying his child. In the novelization of The Motion Picture, Kirk's wife, Admiral Lori Ciana, dies in a transporter accident.[6] Star Trek II reveals that Kirk fathered a son, David Marcus (Merritt Butrick), with Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch). Klingons kill David on the Genesis Planet in Star Trek III. Kirk says in Star Trek VI that David's murder affected his ability to trust Klingons; he held them collectively responsible for David's death, but sets aside this prejudice at the movie's conclusion.

Ahh but the question remains does it rotate?!?! Or better yet No-gravity mode?
