Bands you like covers of better

Here's an ironic one, Lita Ford covering Alice Cooper's Only Women Bleed.

I also love the Nine Inch Nails version of Gary Numan's Metal. It makes me want to build an army of goosestepping robots and take over the world.

Good call on Metal -- The Pleasure Principle is one of my favourite albums, but I still really dig that cover.

Death Cab For Cutie's cover of Bjork's "All Is Full Of Love" is another good one, as well as the Postal Service cover of Phil Collin's "Against All Odds."

I must whole-heatedly endorse this opinion. Mainly because I believe that anybody could perform any song better than Phil Collins, including his own.

I like Reel Big Fish's cover of "Take Me On" by A-ha.

I used to be a pretty big fan of the Before You Were Punk compilations of punk and ska covers of 80s songs. And ME First And The Gimme Gimmes, of course.

The only way I can listen to "Walking in LA"

To add to the list, I find Al Green's version of Light My Fire far superior to the Doors' original effort.

The Smythe barely beat me to it, but tops among covers are Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. There are all kinds of great cover comps ala the Before You Were Punk series. I remember in the late 90s listening to the ska cover comps Got You Covered, which were great.

There was a Duran Duran cover album put out that featured bands like Goldfinger, The Mr. T. Experience, Less Than Jake, Wesley Willis and others that absolutely killed. Hearing Duran Duran through other bands gave me a new appreciation for that group.

All of Nirvana's unplugged covers were great.

And I'll throw out an unpopular pick, G n' R's Great Spaghetti Incident. While it was not so great on the whole, it had it's moments with Hair of the Dog and Attitude.

Not a jaw-dropping album generally, but a few tracks on MxPx's On The Cover grew on me. Apparently, they followed up on it with an "On The Cover II," but I haven't heard it.

I saw Wesly Willis years ago in a hole-in-the-wall venue in Denver. That guy is seriously CRAZY. He was the opening act for a punk show and he walked in with his keyboard the entire time mumbling obscenities and occasionally he'd shout at someone in his way or looking at him. He setup his keyboard, then got up, went back outside and did this walk in and out over and over seemingly looking for his keyboard. He threatened some guy who pointed him to his keyboard which he had just setup a few minutes prior. He immediately calmed down, stopped mumbling and started playing. If you've ever heard his music you'll know what it's like. He starts a random beat on his keyboard then occasionally hits notes while shouting about various animals sexual parts. I had never heard of him before going to that show.

p.s. I was knocked out cold later at that concert from an unopened beer thrown at my head, good times!

FTFY. Wesley Willis died a few years ago
