LittleBigPlanet Catch-all

So, it's only a 1 week delay? That's cool, because that is the week I'm taking off of work.

Jesus, this is a stupid reason to delay a game. I'm glad I have my retail copy already! It's annoying that the servers are going to be delayed too, it feels like half of a game at the moment. Half of a brilliant, hilariously and totally endearing game, but half of a game nonetheless.

The meerkats are cool!

Can we collectively move on? The game is awesome, in 1 week we won't care why it was delayed or even remember.

Move on? People still complain about Steam's launch.

RAAAWWWR!

Also there is no official date yet and retailers estimate Nov. 14th. More than a week.

Yeah, one week is being thrown around in the thread, but I've read November 14th. So which is it?

I mean, there's way too many good games either currently out, recently released, or just peeking around the corner, so this is more of a mild annoyance than a fit of nerd rage I think

It looks like one week is the most recent official estimate.

We will begin shipping LittleBigPlanet to retail in North America the week of October 27th. Sorry for the delay, and rest assured, we are doing everything we can to get LittleBigPlanet to you as soon as possible.

I think the rumors of mid to late November all came before Sony made any official statement.

So that would mean Oct 27-31. When do Sony games usually arrive at big box retail?

Aha, this is what we need to be discussing.
Also, despite bribes, Bestbuy will not sell me LBP.

Does that mean they accepted the bribe, but denied you the game? That's lame!

In OK, a bribe consists of a chicken and a goat and a bushel of wheat.

It consisted of some fungi given at a party to a buddy who works there. The boss blocked his exit from the store room with LBP. Now he owes me 20 dollars.

The LBP blog says 27 October. Meanwhile, Amazon says 4 November, and Best Buy and Circuit City don't even acknowledge that the game exists.

What the heck is going on?

Well Europe just got what appears to be an official release date of November 5th.

This recall has got everybody going all crazy. My bet is that since the street date has been thrown up in the air by the recall retailers will begin selling as soon as they get shipments in so we'll start getting reports of stores selling off and on over the next two weeks.

It's just too bad a small mandatory patch couldn't have done the trick. But I guess for those PS3's without Internet access, more drastic measures were required.

I hope this won't hurt Sony too much. It can't have been fun for them to recall all those discs for scrap and then have to print out a whole new batch for shipment.

Maybe they can turn over the old discs on Ebay. I see they're going for a pretty penny over there right now.

I expect the very presence of the song on the disc, whether it's accessible post patch or not, would anger enough people that Sony didn't want to take any chances. Best to nuke the whole thing from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

It often is.

On to more creative news. I've decided to make something glorious with LBP. Up till this point my levels have been functional platformers at best, one shot punchlines at worst. I really want to make a multi-stage narrative that follows sackboy on an epic quest from inception to completion.

I've decided on the theme (a fairy tale in which sackboy plays the role of the fairygodbeing) and I'd like to ask the GWJ community to take part in the creative process. Later today I'll post a thread with my basic concept outline and ideas. If you want to be a part of the creative process feel free to take part in the discussion. If you don't want to see the levels until they are completed, avoid it like the plague as it will be a spoiler rich environment. I'll post occasional updates in the catch-all when major milestones have been reached (first level published, etc.).

Sounds cool. I wish I had some imagination or creative skill, or a Snickers.

Here's the thread to get in on the creative process.

I don't want to enter your thread because it says there will be spoilers. I just know I'll enter and it will be revealed that you're not actually playing on a LittleBigPlanet but a BigLittlePlanet and the twist will be spoiled.

Hahaha. I thought that was a little bit much. But I also figured that if I was somebody who wanted to play the level but not see the whole process behind it, I would appreciate the heads up.

I'd just like to add that my coworker today informed me that he would not be buying the game because he was sick and tired of Muslims getting preferential treatment in our culture.

And that if I owned a PS3, I would be buying this game.

Seems that Sony is overreacting a bit.

I would tend to agree, but at this point there really doesn't seem to be much point in lamenting it. It is what it is.

I can understand the sentiment that says "I won't buy product X because I disagree with the policies of the company that makes it." Heck, I've even implemented it in cases where I've had serious philosophical differences with the creators of a given product. I suspect most people have at some point.

But at some point the product has to speak for itself. I'm not thrilled with the fact that the two Johns gave a concert to support communists thugs in Nicaragua, but I still buy They Might Be Giants albums, and I'm looking forward to their next album. I'm positive I wouldn't get along with George Clooney in real life, but O Brother Where Art Thou? and the remake of Ocean's Eleven are darn good movies. At some point you have to say "I'm not going to let the fact that I think some people are wrongheaded stop me from enjoying something fine and good."

Hopefully, the reaction to Sony's overreaction won't doom what is, by my estimation, a very good product.

And that's pretty much all I have to say on the subject.

Getting back to gameplay, does anybody know which materials are destructible by explosives? I know some are, because I played some levels where the object of the level was to destroy something with a cannon.

Stone, wood and metal seem unaffected by explosives, at least in my experience with the beta. Is styrofoam the vulnerable material? I'd like to do some demolishing in the full game, whenever it is that I get it, and while I could easily just experiment until something works, I'm curious now and I'm looking for an excuse to get back on discussing the game itself.

Now you have to buy a copy to make up for him. Maybe give it to him as a gift. Or just buy a PS3. I think all are reasonable courses of action.

I know dissolve material can be blown up with explosives. I believe some of the lighter materials like Styrofoam, sponge and cardboard can as well. Although I think the example of Styrofoam I saw took a while to get through.

It didn't occur to me that the dissolve material might be vulnerable, but it certainly makes sense.

Based on your LittleBig FairyTale thread, your levels sound like they're going to be beautiful, uplifting and interesting.

Mine, on the other hand, will likely feature lots of explosions that have no real purpose. Oh! And car chases. With explosions. Car chases with explosions, where the cars explode and the explosions chase the player and the other cars.

I want to be the Michael Bay of Little Big Planet! Or at least the Frank Lupo.

doubtingthomas396 wrote:

Now if we've learned anything from video games it's that explosions don't need to have a purpose to be awesome.

Apparently some Wal-marts and Targets have been selling pre-recall disks.

I tried to check my local Target but no luck. It wasn't a total loss because it's about a 15 minute walk and I apparently need jumper cables. I'll check a Wal-mart once I get my car jumped.
