When it comes to major releases for the Gamecube I never quite trust the exuberance found in most of the reviews. A major site calling Resident Evil 4 the greatest survival horror game ever made is akin to a man dying of thirst raving about the quality of water being poured down his throat. Even so it looks like Resident Evil 4 is finally breaking away from the creaky old control scheme and viewpoint of the previous games and *gasp* trying a fresh approach. IÂ'm even told the shambling men and women arenÂ't zombies! They may walk real slow but trust me on this one, not zombies. They almost look more like the cast of Deliverance wearing shoes four sizes too small. It ships on Tuesday for $49.99.

Just add banjo.

Today on DVD we have the Fifth Element SE, The Village, Paparazzi and more.
Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
Platform: GBA
Ships: Jan 10th
Price: $29.99

The Buzz: I donÂ't usually mention GBA games here but an original Zelda title is worth mentioning.

Mercenaries
Platform: Xbox, PS2
Ships: Jan 10th
Price: $49.99

The Buzz: Despite heavy post-Christmas advertising, I wasnÂ't too impressed with this game at E3. It features a lot of explosions and plenty of attention-whore physics tricks. WeÂ'll see if that amounts to any real gameplay.

Tork: Prehistoric Punk
Platform: Xbox
Ships: Jan 11th
Price: $19.99

Suikoden IV
Platform: PS2
Ships: Jan 11th
Price: $39.99

The Buzz: I played the last one and like most games of this type it ground me into dust twenty hours in and I never played it again. That said, those who liked it, like it a lot.

Virtua Quest
Platform: PS2
Ships: Jan 11th
Price: $39.99

The Buzz: Bad reviews so far, run away!

The Getaway: Black Monday
Platform: PS2
Ships: Jan 11th
Price: $49.99

Another version of Fifth Element huh? I should check this out..

Speaking of Survival Horror, what ever happened to that Lovecraft FPS/Horror hybrid? I'm picking up RE4 for sure, the Cube's gotten the first action in many months with Pikmin 2, so I hope to extend it a bit with RE.

Looks great, but the scores seem a bit generous. I mean, isn't 9.8-10 usually reserved for absolute masterpieces with many, many hours of replayability?

I think I'm in for Mercenaries, though it might not be until Friday or Saturday. Better judgement may win out and I may go completely empty-handed for an entire week.

Believe it or not, I'm finally buying a cube, despite how goofy they look. Mainly for the upcoming Zelda and a few other titles, but RE4 is on the radar as well.

The Cube is not as bad as people say it is... I loved mine for games such as Zelda WW and Metroid Prime... (You'll probably like these too Fletcher)... My Brother got me Metroid Prime 2 for Christmas and since I already beat Fable and KoToR 2 I'll be starting that soon as well assuming I can actually find the GC controllers in the mess of my basement.

I am afraid if I buy a Cube, I won't play it due to my addiction to WoW. Though I want to play Metroid Prime.

Mercenaries for me... blowing stuff up never been more fun!

Swat- you're referring to "Call of Cthulu"? I think they are still "on target" with a 2005 Release- last time I checked, months ago, they were mumbling about 1st Qtr 2005.....

For you wargamers out there, I'd like to add that "Bull Run" is supposed to be available starting tomorrow; despite the "History Channel/Activision" pedigree, it looks pretty cool- and affordable ($20). I'm picking it up this week....

check out the developer's website:

The Gamecube doesn't look goofy... What looks goofy is the Xbox sitting besides it, about 4 times larger and heavier...

Take any vehicle.
Use any weapon.
Blow stuff up.
Blow it up some more.
Blow the living crap out of it.
Blow the living crap out of it again.

I'm so sold on Mercenaries. I was going to be a good little boy and save my money and wait until my next paycheck to pick it up, but I'm having a terrible time controlling myself on this one.

This RE4 game is going to sell as "huge" as Vietiful Joe did.

If you are patient enough and can wait just a wee bit, Capcom will cave in and will release it for PS2, just as with VE before.

I am sure they are already working on a port.

Mercenaries is a must for me. I actually played through the demo and had a blast (yep intended). As for RE4....yep going to buy it as well.

It will sell much better than ViewtifulJoe did. The port of VJ, sold very poorly on the PS2. I think the port of RE might not be released at all and not in the US.

I think RE4 will do well over 1.5 million in the states.

Viewtiful Joe was a bit more "artsy" whereas Zombie Killing' has a bit larger market, plus the Resident Evil name is practically household. It's going to sell like hotcakes, but I have a feeling the PS2 version will do quite well.

I don't. It will be 9-10 months later and compete with Dragon Warrior, FFXII, and whatever else Sony launches in the fall.
