LittleBigPlanet Catch-all

Neato, a marriage proposal in LBP

Awesome, Partially because of the proposal, partially because there was some really clever level design (I liked the floating hearts).

Funny thing happened today. I got a friend request from someone who I didn't immediately recognize as a GWJ member. The message said that (s)he had played my fuel tank level and really enjoyed it. It feels kind of cool to have someone seek me out specifically because they liked something I had created. That's never happened to me before.

I played your Fuel Tank level a couple of times too. the first time I didn't quiiiite get out of the window on the top the first try. so i went back down and the rocket platform was upside down... so i had to restart. the next time it worked fine though. Silly rockets flipping out all the time.

I played the Fuel Tank level too, but I couldn't figure out what to do with the explosives. Was there a switch that I missed? I tried throwing them down the hole with the elevator, since I Mr. Caruso instructed me to clean the place up, but it didn't seem to do anything.

The were actually just there to be scary. It was 3am by the time I got to that point and was running on creative fumes. They do explode when you hit the button for the rocket elevator of doom.

Ah. In that case, it was a fun level-- I just thought I was missing something.

It was my understanding that Beta levels will be wiped from the full game. I haven't deleted the LBP beta from my hard drive yet, because I'm wondering if there are any benefits to having it when the full game installs.

Kind of like how the Patapon demo gave you a special, but not very useful, weapon.

Or maybe your created levels will be there when you open your pod.

Does anyone know? If it doesn't confer any benefits, I'll just delete it, as I have better uses for that gig of space.

1 - The created levels will be kept in the final game.

2 - No news about the beta conferring any benefits. I'm going to keep mine, just in case it is neccessary to keep my created level info. I'm gonna chock that up to paranoia more than anything.

Yaay! Dr. Horrible's Copyright Infringing LBP Level will survive!

My brain is just bursting with ideas for stuff to do once I get the full game. I'm going to build a jumping-jack like the one my daughter has and figure out how to work it into a level, and I want to try my hand at building a working firearm with explosives just to see how good the physics simulation is (I doubt the game does expanding gasses, but it might be worth a shot, if you'll pardon the pun.) The Missus wants to see if there's a way to launch players out of a cannon. I can think of a few ways to do that, and I can barely wait to try.

Also, I was thinking of trying my hand at making the first level in Contra. That one might not make it to air, though, depending on how well the translation works.

I have some other ideas for themed levels, but I'm going to keep those under my hat because I want everyone to be surprised, and in case I forget to follow through with it.

I haven't been this excited about a new release since Loco Roco (which was the only game I've ever preordered). I'm getting this game for my birthday in November, but I'm opening it as soon as it gets here. Great example to set for my daughter, I know, but she's only 16 months old and the concept of delayed gratification isn't one that she's capable of understanding yet, so we're cool for now. When she gets older, I'll have to be more staid. But until then... squee!

Little Big Planet. Macross F Fans.

heh, enjoy.

Did anyone preorder LBP for the extras?

I just found out that Amazon is offering some kind of creation guide with preorders. I guess I'll be getting one of those when the game shows up.

Anyone getting the Kratos costume by preordering from Gamestop? Personally, I've never gotten a preorder perk from Gamestop, even if I was supposed to. (Like when I preordered LocoRoco, but never got the "bonuses" that were supposed to come with the game)

I went to preorder at Best Buy, because I like Nariko far more than I like Kratos, but alas they didn't have any preorders left.

I pre-ordered from Gamestop for this very reason. I did it at the local store and received a card with the code. I'm not a big fan of God of War, but when they juiced the bonus up to several costumes and a pre-built level I was sold. I can use a minotaur or medusa costume in different scenarios.

Yeah, my roommate got the Gamestop pre order as well.
Minotaur rape anyone?

I want the Kratos costume so badly, but I can't justify driving an hour away to get the code and then driving an hour away again to pick the game up. Can't afford the gas. I'm very sad this year.

So I've been playing the retail version for a couple of nights without exposure to the beta before that. What a great game. I wouldn't play it alone, but it's just joy with my wife, friends or colleagues.

The one thing I'm a little bothered about is the relative difficulty of the platforming. I'm mostly looking forward to all the user-generated content and making my own worlds, but you need to more or less beat the game in order to get all the stuff to build with, and it's proving pretty hard. I don't mind starting over a couple of times to clear a level, but most of the difficulty comes from the physics-powered and thus a little imprecise controls, especially on sloped surfaces. It shouldn't be this way. Still, we're maybe one third through the game and the occasional moment of frustration is not enough to spoil the experience.

I haven't liked a game's audio this much since, well, ever. This is the only game apart from music games which makes me turn up the volume. Show-stopping stuff.

Am I missing something? How the hell are you already playing the retail version? Is the North American release behind everyone else? This is me being very jealous!

No, sorry - should've mentioned it's an advance copy given out to press earlier this week. Not the review code, but the actual pressed promotional copy. It's proven rather popular at work.

What's making me frustrated is that they haven't yet turned on the (retail-version) LBP servers, thus there's no user content to browse yet. Argh!

You made Gaald jealous. Good work. Of course you have also made me jealous, so boo on you.

That's what you get for beeing cooler than us.

Ahhh spite, aint it delicious?

Sony: LittleBigPlanet to be recalled on global level because of Qur’an content

During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused.

We’ll confirm the new launch date shortly.

Some are saying Nov.14 now, although I'd like to see some more confirmation. Enjoy your betas you jerks!

Wah?

I mean, is that really so horrible?

I don't want to insult anyone's religion but this seems a bit extreme. From what I gathered from the post on the playstation forums combining phrases from the Qur'an with music is "deeply offensive." That's fine and all but just because something is offensive doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. For example I find Arnold Schwarzenegger being in any way associated with Biblical prophesy to be deeply offensive, but I don't expect 'End of Days' to be recalled.

But that is all besides the fact. What I really don't get is why this couldn't have been addressed with a day 1 patch?

Well, I was trying to decide if I wanted to wait on picking up LBP, Fable 2, or Fallout 3 this month and grab Saints Row 2 instead. This is a sign from God himself that he wants me to use the money I was going to spend on LBP next week and buy Saints Row 2.

He certainly works in mysterious ways.

I guess so, I'm surprised they didn't catch it beforehand though. I'm sure the copies in the wild sitting in the back with the retailers are going to be a desired item, or maybe they have to send them all back, who knows.

I was looking forward to playing this with my son, we've both been stoked for the October release. Back to Garry's mod I guess!

I posted this over in the comments for Rabbit's article, but I'll repost here because it'll be easier to keep track.

Frak! It's true.

We learnt yesterday that there is a lyric in one of the licensed tracks which some people may find offensive, and which slipped through the usual screening processes. Obviously MM and Sony together took this very seriously. LBP should be enjoyable by all. So within 12 hours of hearing about this issue involving a lyric (in Somalian, I believe!), we prepared an automatic day 0 patch and had a new disk image ready; however a decision was made within Sony that the right thing to do for quality and support of people with no on-line was to replace existing disks. They assure us that they are doing everything in their power to get things straightened out as fast as possible, and will announce dates soon.

Because, I guess, there's a big LBP community in Somalia, and they're worth delaying the game for the entire world over.

I have a number of comments about this that I could serve up, but they'd be better suited to P&C so I won't mention them here.

Grr!

EDIT:

Wow, a lot of commenters at the developer's blog are talking about boycotting the game over this.

Man, Sony sure knows how to shoot itself in the foot.

EDIT #2:

Amazon still shows the ship date as being October 21. I've sent an email asking them if that date will be honored. I'll report back when I hear something.

What a bunch of overly politically correct garbage.

I know there is a precedent for bending over backwards to be respectful of this sort of thing in European countries, but to my knowledge companies don't typically care so much when it comes to North America and Japan. Also, why wouldn't simply patching the game suffice in most countries?

This is called a 'stall tactic.' Isnt it obvious?

Clearly they couldnt get the hacked psp detection and bricking code implemented correctly into the game in time for the original retail release date.

I'm not sure why they had to do anything at all. It's not like offending religious people mattered when it was Resistance, or Assassin's Creed.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. Wouldn't that have been handled with the latest firmware update?

AAAAHAHAHAHAHHAGGGGHHHH!
f*ck TITTY f*ck f*ck!
Just because of this, I will imbibe alcohol, consort with loose women and use the lord's name in vain this weekend.

Sounds like a solid coping strategy. I'm with you, but my wife is gonna kill me if she finds out I'm referring to her as a loose woman

In all seriousness, I'm finding it hard to get worked up about this. I want the game, but waiting another month won't kill me. It just buys me more time with the other excellent releases.

I'm suddenly torn. On the one hand, I want to reward developers for turning out what appears to be an excellent product. But on the other, I don't want to reward Sony for being so gutless on this when they haven't had any problems offending other groups in the past (anyone remember the black vs white PSP billboards that ran in japan? Did Sony stop selling white PSPs over that?)

It's certainly not the biggest problem I'm facing now, but it was something I was really looking forward to. I would have been more forgiving if they'd said they were having problems bringing the network servers online, or if there had been a pressing problem and the discs were unreadable. Delaying shipments to the entire world just because some people in the less free parts of it might not like it is just stupid, and a ridiculous double standard.

Joystiq has done some research on the song in question. It seems it's a world music track by a grammy award winning devout Muslim.
