Far Cry 2 Catch-All

That review is pushing all the right buttons for me.

I'm pre-ordered thru Steam, so all I have to do now is... wait.

Seconded. I'm dying to play it already, Last time I was so hyped about a game was when I had heard about STALKER. Less than two weeks now...

It's definitely in my Fall/Winter Top 5 this year. I just wish it wasn't coming out the same week as LittleBigPlanet, and right before Fallout 3. I may have to bump it back a bit.

I'm in the same boat as others here. I'm really excited about this, love the setting, the open world, everything. It just comes out at a time when both money and time are at a minimum, with my pile already consisting of 3-4 games at the moment. I'll definitely be getting it, but unless there's a perfect storm of extra funds and free time it's just going to have to wait a bit.

Man, this game just looks sweeter every time I see it.

I can't see that Page 2 link, get a 403 error - anyone got a working one?

From the PC Gamer Review

There are issues with Far Cry 2's dramatic development: as the game appears to be drawing to a close, it opens up again, asking you to repeat the same style of missions and tasks over a similar sized area. Essentially, you play two games of Far Cry 2, doing the same tasks on a different continent. Great value for money. But draining.

My emphasis. This is intriguing. Is he saying that there's another 50km square area that the second half of the game takes place in, and that it's not in Africa? Or is he talking about two chunks, both about 25km square, both in Africa, which you access sequentially?

This is the first hint I've seen that any of the game takes place outside Africa - anyone seen anything that backs this up?

I would guess they mean the two 25 km chunks and poorly considered wording.

This game is definitely on my list, but I think I've already bought all the games I'm going to be playing this holiday season so it will be a bit later.

Yet another game I'll circle back around to after the holiday swarm is over.

This really sounds like a game that would have benefited from an April release. A lot of people seem to be saying that same thing.

I am really wondering how the usual "Lets release everything in the 4th quarter" BS release policy is going to interact with the "I can has Depression" consumer no-confidence wave this year? Just before the most crowded release schedule month of the year, the American economy takes a major nose dive taking chunks of the world banking system with it.

It will be interesting to see what the earnings reports look like by this time next year. Anecdotal evidence says games are semi-recession proof, but I know that my games budget has been very reduced since 2007 (to the delight of Gamefly.com).

The news of securerom being in this has me considering the 360 version.

Oh - which version? Limited installs or just securom DVD protection? A link to that news? I can only find inconclusive forum posts via google.

[edit] Ah, nevermind - found it.

My french is pretty poor but:

Securom is a video game programme for managing digital rights. It installs on your PC to stop copying and limit the number of installations possible for the game. An internet connection is required at the time of installation and the first execution of the game.

Why is it so hard to find this crap out? It should be so easy to get this info. I've complained to the online shop i preordered from for them not having it in the system requirements and information.

Preorder cancelled. Sorry Far Cry 2, you looked a wonderful game.... but i want to be able to play you whenever i want and not only for 3 or 5 times and i don't want to have to pay again to be able to get more i.e. the phonecall is definitely not free and i shouldn't have to justify installing my game to the publisher when i supported them.

Is every game thread that has a PC release destined to be lead down the "DRM Outrage" Path? Can't we just stick to talking about the game itself? Perhaps a sticky thread with everyone who hates DRM can post in there some generic outrage that can be edited for every new game?

EDIT

360 Version for me.. Though the graphics look amazing enough that it would be cool to push it to the max detail wise on the PC side.

I'm not outraged. I'm not even a little angry. I'm just leaning toward not buying the PC version now. Not a big deal really.

The bonus there would be not watching my now aging 8800GTX potentially choke on the game at resolutions I like to play in.

I wouldn't have to talk about it if it was announced with the game or when i preordered the game. I personally don't like being deceived (as i was when i bought Crysis Warhead) and if someone had known and posted about the DRM in that thread i would have cancelled my preorder too. So in effect you don't want me to tell people so they don't have a choice? Or are you happy to allow the publishers to deceive their customers?

I'm not bringing it up in every thread and not when it's not pertinent. You may be fed up of the anti-DRM stance - though i don't think one post talking about the limited installs being present on a game counts as a DRM outrage "path" - I'm fed up of other people telling me what i can and can't talk about and i'm also fed up with people who are happy to sit there while they get slapped in the face by companies who are taking them for granted.

It's not like i'm trying to convert everyone, i'm not telling people to not buy the game.

You can pre-order just about everything.. years before its even finished development let alone details like what DRM it will use.

Read my post again.

Well.. perhaps then like I said.. separate threads for DRM related issues? I'd just hate to see the signal to noise ration go the Amazon.com route here. I like coming here and reading about gameplay.. for instance I'm watching the Dead Space thread for discussions about its gameplay to see if its worth buying..

I am not happy about the DRM, but like I did with Spore, I'll still be getting this one. I'm convinced that a boycott can't affect a change in PC gaming. If sales dropped more, publishers would either just blame piracy, or blame piracy AND leave the platform. If it really becomes an issue, I'll end-round the DRM. I will still complain about DRM, and hope that we can be rid of it for good in the future, but really, with an excuse as convincing as piracy, boycotting it solves nothing for me.

I preordered it late last month - by which point they would have had the DRM finalised.

Well if you think about it DRM isn't much of an issue in console game threads so yes i did read your post i just didn't feel i the need to qualify my statement unnecessarily.

There is no game play. Did FC2 come out already? A separate DRM thread would just be ignored so would be pointless in letting people know which games had limitations and which didn't. I wasn't planning on discussing this further than my original post anyway so i wasn't planning on derailing the thread as it has now become. I felt, once Thin_J alerted me to it, that it was worth commenting on since i'd not seen any 'news' of the limited installs on any site.

Not necessarily.

Either way, I'd be interested to know how this thing performs on various PC hardware configs. I'm mostly leaning toward the preorder deal on Steam, but I know my machine is going to struggle to run the game at high detail. On the other hand, I know the visuals have been scaled back to some extent for the console versions, so it's hard to know whether PC or 360 is the best option for a graphics whore with an aging PC. If it's going to be a toss-up in terms of performance, I'd just as soon go with PC for $15 cheaper and mouse + keyboard control.

Skimming, slightly - but there was a bit of a clarification over on bluesnews about the DRM.

Some DRM points that will hopefully answer some of your questions and will clarify some misunderstandings about our DRM and SecuROM:

- You have 5 activations on 3 separate PCs.

- Uninstalling the game “refunds” an activation. This process is called “revoke”, so as long as you complete proper uninstall you will be able to install the game an unlimited number of times on 3 systems.

- You can upgrade your computer as many time as you want (using our revoke system)

- Ubisoft is committed to the support of our games, and additional activations can be provided.

- Ubisoft is committed to the long term support of our games: you’ll always be able to play Far Cry 2.

Personally, so long as I can revoke an installation by uninstalling the rest of it I can live with.

To me it's all baloney since I will crack it the moment after a crack open the box, insert the DVD, and finish installing the game. It's a bad message to send by voting with my wallet but so far the cracking has worked out ok for me. Path of least resistance and all.

It's almost like you take this stuff personally, gg. Your anti-rage outmatches the outrage.

It's all part of the dance to see who buys on what platform so we can reach a critical mass for multiplayer. Necessary part of forum life.

We're going to play this multiplayer? The map editor looks really neat, but the videos I've seen of people actually playing together looked pretty ho-hum.

Yeah, my brain refuses to see this as anything but a single player game with some nifty but essentially useless map building tech included.

You guys aren't seeing the big picture!

I'm not seeing this as a game where we shoot at each other in a finely balanced match of life and death.

I see this as a game where I decide to build a canyon system, throw 4 hand-gliders on the top of a huge mountain then invite 3 friends to come in and fly off with me. Then I burn you alive with a flame-thrower while we float down. Then I hop on an ATV and race away before you can extract your revenge.

Any game with flamethrowers and propagating brush fires is good for at least a couple hours of multiplayer fun.

Peep this Editor Hands-On

"It took 20 years of forced slave labor to build the Great Pyramid of Giza. Using the map creator in Far Cry 2, it will take only about an hour. Last time we saw this game in action at Ubisoft Montreal, we were introduced to the basics of the map-creator tool, which gives you the ability to create and alter terrain on the fly with the push of a button. This time around, we take a look at several user-created maps from the Montreal team to show just how crazy you can get. Be sure to check out the recent-image pages for even more looks at these maps. The pyramids are just the beginning."

I'm convinced.
