Jerry Bruckheimer hockey.. the mind wanders.

It's weird though.. one thing I could always count on out of Leafs Nation was some nutjob somewhere claiming that this was the year when all the pieces would come together and Toronto would do well. This year, however, the Leafs coaching staff and admin have made it pretty clear that we do not intend to compete. I have to say though, I kind of miss that nutjob - he was crazy as hell, but he was fun, you know?

Toronto 3 Detroit 2

Something tells me the country is going to be all nutjobs tomorrow morning.

Holy crap...
Calgary @ Vancouver
6 - 0 Canucks.

Both Burrows and Bernier look awesome.

I begrudgingly took the Sedin sisters this year in my pool and that 6-0 win was a very pleasant surprise!

They kept falling in one of my drafts this year and I got them both so if they crack 80 where I drafted them I'm very much a contender GO Nucks GO (that hurts.)

WTF? No really, WTF?

Wow.. I mean.. just wow. He'd almost have to intentionally get that wrong.

Nah, he's just English.

Here's the video.

Def Leppard shouldn't have even been touching the Cup.

Hurricanes 6, Panthers 4. What a roller coaster. After giving up two early goals, the Canes finally got their skates moving and held off a strong push by the Panthers at the end. This was a very different looking game than these teams usually play. The Hurricanes had blue lines that jumped in at the drop of a hat resulting in an unheard of 7 points from the defensemen alone. Perhaps most heartening is that Staal didn't figure in any of the Hurricanes 16 points. If we get that kind of production from the grunts that's a decent sign, and Staal should be counted on for production as well. Journeyman Dan LaCouture notched his first goal as a Hurricane after a stellar training camp earned him a contract and I couldn't be happier. He stood out from his first appearance and Carolina has a history of supporting hard working players like LaCouture, Larose and ex-Cane Kevyn Adams.

The result could have been very different but Ward proved adequate to stave off the attempts. He made some stellar saves and I can't say that he gave up anything soft. Both Booth and Horton slung some absolutely stunning shots past him that were simply perfect. But he played solidly, challenged the shooters and, while seeming to fight off the puck more than usual, still came up with the win.

Things weren't all roses. The defensemen might have stepped up their offensive mindset but nobody -- but Gleason, really -- was minding the store in the defensive end. Many soft turnovers with the majority being rung up by Pitkanen. At times it was painful to watch as the Canes got trapped in their own end.

A decent start and positive in many aspects, but the defense has got to step it up defensively.

I know I'm a nerd, that's a sweet looking logo on Brodeur's mask. It's a step up from just having the J and the flames/maple leaf style on the sides of the mask.

I've heard some criticism of it but I really like his new mask.

I'm not sure anyone but me cares but in the Canucks season opener they had a tribute to Luc Bourdon. Luc was 21 years old when he died in a motorbike accident this summer. It was the best tribute I have ever seen,.

An extremely well built team that has finally added the defence they have been missing. Now they need to shake the playoff choker label. Also, I think Thornton has been a wee bit overrated since his Hart win two years ago. An outstanding player but I've watched him be complacent far too often.

Hehe, I love watching the Lightning lose. I have no reason to hate them but with their new crazy ownership trying to buy a Cup while ignoring defence I enjoy watching them fail.

Canucks win their second game of the season 5-4 in OT. Very strange game. Vancouver scored first and then Calgary tied on the next shift. Flames managed to score 2 goals in 30 seconds to go ahead 3-1 in the first. Canucks counter with 2 goals in a minute in the second. However, about 2 minutes later Calgary scores again taking a 4-3 lead into the third period. With about six minutes to go Daniel Sedin scores his second of the game to tie it up. The reffing was ridiculously. After a non-call on Burrows he managed to get a breakaway, fans on the shot/pass but Demitra taps it into the open net. Glad to get a win even if it is a bit tainted. Now they have a 5 game East coast swing (Washington, Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago & Columbus).

I caught the last 10 minutes of the Devils-Penguins game, plus the OT. 49 shots, 2 goals. Sounds about right for a Devil's victory! Also nice almost-boarding move after the game-winning goal on Parise.

Hurricanes 4, Lightning 3 in OT. After falling behind 3 to nothing in the second the Canes rally again. Absolutely exciting game and the Hurricanes seemed unstoppable in the third. Staal climbs on the board with two goals, the second of which was the game winner. Of course, had he not buried what Ray Whitney so beautifully put on his plate -- a two on one that Whitney sold "shot" so thoroughly Smith was halfway to the parking lot -- I'm certain that Ray would have skated over and punched him. Leighton likewise seemed to fight the puck the whole night but, again, was adequate to the task though he only faced about 2 shots in the third.

Laviolette mixed up lines heading into the third to great success. Moving Cullen up to the skill lines paid dividends and putting Ruutu instead of Eaves on a line with Staal to provide some physical presence did wonders. Pitkanen was dangerous the whole night (in a good way) putting solid shots on net and directly causing the Lightning turnover that led to the GWG. Though not appearing on the scoresheet Samsonov was often a catalyst for good things happening. The fourth line, usually Sutter, LaCouture and Bayda, often got pinned in their zone for their entire shift. Turnovers were reduced but stupid penalties weren't.

Sorry Melrose, you'll have to wait at least until the next game for your first win.

The Leafs beat the Red Wings
The Canadiens beat the Leafs
The Red Wings won the Stanley Cup
By my calculations that means that the Canadiens will win the Stanley Cup.

Sweet. Stanley Cup Parade S&T?

On another note, Oilers got vastly outplayed by the Avalanche yet still got the win. Begging 2 questions -
1) Is Mathieu Garon a legit #1? He looked like it tonight.
2) Is Dustin Penner wasted on the third line? Somewhere, Brian Burke is crying.

I haven't checked yet, so it may turn out to be as difficult as finding the Sox games back in 2004, but I'm still really glad that the 'Hawks will be on TV this year. It's just like going to the game, only with cheaper beer--and more laundry between periods.

This is a flawless analysis!

5 points out of 6 on the first trip of the season. Not bad. Not bad.

Or, Dysplastic and Green go for a beer.

I really liked seeing the back of Brodeur's mask, when he kept on watching the puck go flying past him.

Rangers 4 - Devils 1.

(He says, knowing that if the Blueshirts hold to form, the 5-0 start is listed in the dictionary as the definition of "flattering to deceive".)

Also, R.I.P. Alexei Cherepanov.

Buffalo beat Montreal in a shootout.
=Buffalo Sabres win Stanley Cup in 7 games.

Mickey Renaud, Luc Bourdon, and Alexei Cherepanov. All dead before their mid-20s. So sad.

Man the Devils certainly get enough shots off to win big, but are squeezing past with 1 goal victories. Marty's closing in on #552, and should get it this calendar year if he can stay healthy & NJ stays strong, and if he doesn't play the Rangers. Is it me, or are the Caps jerseys now red, white and black?

Who will stop the Habs huh?

NOBODY!

Dunno, looks like they have about a week left.
