All Pro Football 2k8 - Official Season 4 Draft Thread

Following the lead of others, I'm the last person with a Gold pick.

So with the 129th pick of the draft the Sharks select HB: O.J. Simpson

With pick 127, firesloth chooses ...... wait for it: Bobby Herbert! (QB, Bronze)

Upon hearing that, you folks know now to fear the mighty Sparrows! (Yes, that's the team name I'm going with...it invokes just the right level of fear!)

WooHoo...let's get this thing started!! DS, can you set up a league so we can join as we finish?

I'll set it up tonight, but we had one decision to make unless you wanted me to be a dictator. We were talking about scheduling and had tossed around the idea of doing "divisions" so that people had rivalries, things like that. Then when everyone found out we couldn't have those divisions translate directly into playoff seeding everyone seemed to cool on it. So are we where we think we are? I just create an 8 game season and create a schedule where everyone plays 7 different teams from the pool of teams we have?

And for the new guys or those who have forgotten, we go 8 because 2k goes in multiples of 2 if I remember correctly (I always forget between seasons). So you can't do a 12 game or 10 game season. You'd have to jump to 16. And that's way to long when you want to get to drafting for Season 5.

With the 128th pick of the draft, Elliottx selects Bronze G Steve Wisniewski.

Ruthless is on the clock...

Muffin takes with 129th pick K Jeff Jaeger

Maxox you are on the clock for the last pick of the draft.

With the 131st and final pick of the draft Maxox selects Bronze WR Eric Martin.

Whoa. Muffin, does that mean you actually think folks are going to be able to stop you forcing you to try a FG, or that you're just going to get more distance on your kick offs?

Yippee!

Regarding divisions: I'm not sure I care that much. It sounded like it'd be a clusterf*ck when it came time to do playoffs, as if that wasn't the case anyway with the way they do the seeding.

Honestly, I think I would be up for a 16 game schedule, but I understand folks wanting to get back to the draft to reconstruct. For an eight game season, I'm not sure there is a reasonable way to accomplish divisions in any way. So lets just makes sure we all get four home and four away games.

I tried last year, and will try again to set up a preseason tournament. I'd like to do it on Legend difficulty as a test to see what everyone thinks. I'm open to input on that.

I was going to setup the league on the same level as last year. Is there disagreement with that?

I like the Idea of more games, 16 might be a bit much if your team stinks I would have died with my 1-7 record last season. I think 12, would be better. But I will do what ever you decide. I'm also fine with everything else.

Im good with whatever. I believe I will go through what Frankie did last season, a long losing season but I hope to improve my game because of it.

12 would be nice, but it sounds like it's out of the question with the scheduling. If we do an 8 game schedule, I think we should start the draft or its initial phases during the playoffs. Wait, I suppose I'm saying I'm in for Season 5. I'm still having a great time with this game.

This game has exceeded my expectations as well (though I know I haven't played it nearly as much as many here have already). With this being my first trip online with this game, I'm up for any settings or options the rest of the group decides. I usually prefer longer seasons but I would think an 8 or 12 game season would be more likely to stay on track vs. a full 16 game stint. Just my opinion of course.

Okay, for the finals this time around, we ought to convince ruthless (;) ) to point his webcam at the TV and stream it over http://www.stickam.com/ or some other such service....I'd love to watch the game!!

I think for season 5 draft, we should make a rule. Only draft on weekends so Bagger can wait all week for us.:D

Better yet: we get to pick for Bagga. I see a team of 2 kickers, a punter, and 8 offensive linemen. Gotta' have backups...

Alright, I'm setting the season up tonight. I'm using the same settings unless there are any objections.

No injuries, 6 minute quarters, 8 game season, 8 playoff spots and the level one down from Legend, I think.

Can we eliminate the late hits penalties if possible. Maybe we could even come to a gentleman's agreement?

I'll turn them off if I can. Not sure if I can, though.

I'm not accepting late hits anymore.

They're too arbitrary, and even the flags that are 'deserved' may arise because of the sometimes-difficult-to-predict nature of which player the game will give you control of on defense. I have seen several examples (at least in offline play) of getting called for a late hit when my player left his feet before the play was over, my player never hit the opposing team's player, or both!

I'll reserve the right to accept them if someone accepts one on me earlier in a game, but I will not otherwise take the yardage.

My vote is no. If you don't want a late hits call, then don't hit a person late. I also think injuries, should be on amd everybody should try and take out either Jerry Rice, or Dan Marino, the we can hear Ruthlessmuffin cry.:D

I was wondering about that...I don't know if there are detailed sliders for penalties you can adjust when creating an online game. Maybe it's in an online settings menu somewhere? I suspect you cannot do this, but I hope you can!

Most people don't actually perform late hits themselves. Late hits are almost always flukes.

I've noticed my late hits are usually the result of a late switch while trying to gang tackle the nastier HBs.

If we can't turn late hits off then I am on board for a gentleman's agreement.

I just don't think that the actions that lead to a late hit provide an advantage. But the sporadic late penalties certainly do make a big difference in some games. If we had injuries on, and folks really were going after QBs, then I think you have to keep the penalties. But without injuries, the late hits penalties serve no purpose, but do really affect the outcome of some games.

I'd really like to see a consensus on this.

I, personally, stopped getting late hits once I stopped playing the game like I played Madden (not saying this is other's troubles, just mine). I haven't had any in a while. On or off, I'll be honest, I don't care quite so much. I'd err towards on though.

Injuries though, is something else altogether. Given how much time we sink into creating these teams, I feel that off is best, since it'd be a real drag to lose your Gold Star whatever one game into the year, however good the backup may end up being.

Injuries are off unless there is a big uproar. Losing your gold QB for all season is disproportionately bad. It makes the game almost broken at that point.

I agree that it can be avoided. Playing like Madden was definitely the cause for me, and I do get them far less now. I can definitely see the point of just sucking it up. I've seen the CPU commit a late hit on the QB completely on its own, which I think should be a legitimate penalty. But some of those late hits penalties are awfully petty. I feel bad taking my 15 yards and first down on a play where my opponent just stuffed me on 3rd and 4 when his late tap of a dive button gets called. It's not like my opponent was able to stop me because of it.

But then, that does mimic real games, where a ridiculous penalty really turns the momentum of a game. I would just like to start the season with all of us on the same page. This shouldn't be something each team negotiates before the game. If it comes to that, I'd say home team gets to make the call pre-game.
