GFW radio gone...other recommended podcasts?

Pages

Of course I love the GWJ podcast, but to save me from having to start listening to it multiple times what other gamer podcasts are recommended?
There was some good discussion in a thread posted re Shawn Elliot's departure from GFW, but I can't seem to find the thread anymore...

I personally like listening to:
Gamers with Jobs (of course)
PC Gamer Podcast
World of Warcast and The Instance (up until I stopped playing WOW)
There must be more intelligent gaming podcasts out there.

I don't mind game theory, and the PC Gamer UK podcast

Another vote for Game Theory. Also, look into Giant Bomb's podcast. A lot of people seem to be liking that one.

I enjoy Game Theory's discussion, they're all older veterans of video game journalism, although they really need someone to take the production reins because the audio quality is iffy and technical issues arise far too often.

I'm also a fan of Player One Podcast. They also are mostly former editors of video game magazines and can provide a unique perspective. The only thing I don't like is how they sometimes go out of their way to make snide comments about PC gaming. I understand it's the minority popularity view right now, and I don't expect them to like it, but sometimes it's a bit too much.

Drunken Gamers Radio is one of the eight million podcasts that are essentially just random guys drinking beer and talking about games they played. However, they tend to be a cut above the rest with at least some focus and they act a lot more natural around the microphone without a lot of dead air or listless commentary. They do tend to goof off, swear profusely and make offensive comments, which I know turns a lot of people off of them. But personally I find them to be the perfect mix of people who are enthusiastic about games and clearly present their opinions in an intelligent manner, and then they act like jackasses that makes me laugh during my bus trips so everyone else looks at me like I'm an idiot. They don't go so far in their antics that it starts getting on your nerves. Well, maybe Moe sometimes. They are big old-school gaming fans who spend a lot of time on shmups and other retro stuff, and while I'm not as interested in that stuff, their excitement for it keeps it interesting and has actually gotten me to try some titles I usually would have been too close-minded to even try. I do find their obsession with retro gaming sometimes funny, though: They'll talk about how they shelled out $80 for some premium condition copy of a shooter they already own on another platform, or how they bought some $150 arcade stick or something, and then later in the episode complain about how expensive games are these days.

I also enjoy Giant Bombcast, mostly because I've always been a huge fan of the old Gamespot crew, especially Gerstmann.

1UP FM is quickly becoming one of my favourites as well, particularly because I love Nick Suttner with all my heart. It's segmented quite well, almost giving you the feeling that you're listening to an audio magazine every week. I really adore the Backlog segment. It's so good to hear long discussions about a game between several people who played it all the way through, but that never happens on podcasts because it's rare for an entire crew to have finished the same game, and everyone seems so obsessed with nobody having any spoilers no matter how old the game is.

Hmm...I pretty much mainly listen to the same ones as well:

PC Gamer UK is excellent, but like a lot of magazine based stuff it's only once a month (around the time of the new print issue), which is annoying.

I'm digging the Giant Bomb podcast as well - good chemistry between the old Gamespot stalwarts.

I also really like 1up FM as well

I notice on RPS today Keiron Gillen made a post about GFW radio and the last line is

2) If you had to construct a dream podcast, what would it be like? What would it include?

...do I dare to dream of a RPS podcast in the future?

One Life Left is great if you're tired of all these other podcasts taking games so seriously.

What's RPS?

I assume he means Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

Joystiq Podcast: I know Justin McElroy freelances on PC Gamer, so it would be nice if he discuss more PC games on there. But it's still very console-centric (not that I mind). I enjoy listening to the all the hosts, but their humor takes some getting used to.

Big Download: Completely PC games related podcast. They release new episodes on a consistent basis. Fairly informative and entertaining at times.

Xbox360Fanboy: My favorite 360-centric podcast.

1upFM: When it was EGM Live, I felt it was a complete yawn-fest. But the new 1upFM has been growing on me lately.

Decent audio podcasts to consider, depending on your taste:

Broadcast Gamer (sporadic, usually solo presenter, info a bit dated, very high production quality)
CAG Foreplay (husband/wife team, both play a LOT of console games, strong retro knowledge)
Channel Massive (mature group with good chemistry, periodic high profile guests, loose MMO focus)
Co-Mutiny (goofy, immature but very bright Scottish college kids; some episodes are "epic fail", others have you ROFL for an hour)
Game Theory (former PC Gamer EIC, NextGen/Edge EIC & Edge contributor/producer; general focus on industry trends, NPD's, etc.)
Gamers with Jobs - Conference Call (duh)
Giant Bombcast (as noted, former Gamespot editors, was very good from Episode 1 and keeps getting better, longer episodes than most)
IGN - Command Prompt (PC topics, fairly new & still a little awkward; frankly a bit too short for the topics, usually)
Joystiq (3 online editors, usually entertaining discussion, annoying because S. African guy's Skype connection keeps dropping)
Massively (tight MMO focus, usually good topics; unfortunately, Michael Zenke is a poor host with annoying verbal mannerisms)
Massively Online Gamer (MOG used to be great and is now sporadic; meandering topics, ribald and occasionally dark humor)
PC Gamer (the best PC podcast left, a bit highbrow in the sense that they don't acknowledge "semi-pro" communities like GWJ)
Van Hemlock (UK podcast, general MMO focus with frequent mention of Eve and Guild Wars; polite, soothing voices and commentary)
Virgin Worlds (one of the oldest continuing MMO podcasts, quality and timeliness has varied since Brent started his "collective")
1UP Yours (console-centric, vigorous round-table discussion, sometimes hilarious, almost always very entertaining)

Specifically NOT recommended: TalkRadar (for one of the top-traffic gaming websites, it's bad, REALLY bad)

Edit: I forgot to mention 1UP FM, which is also good, though I usually skip the Backlog portion.

Giant Bomb and Joystiq (in addition to the Conference Call) would be the two broad videogame ones that I'd recommend.

What's RPS?

Yes, sorry - meant Rock Paper Shotgun...a deadly alliance of the UK's best PC games writing ninjas

Specifically NOT recommended: TalkRadar (for one of the top-traffic gaming websites, it's bad, REALLY bad)

You're not wrong...it's remarkably NSFW in the most immature manner possible and they are big fans of the random sound effects.

Forgot about Joystiq...another good one.

The current Evil Avatar podcast is also pretty good actually - not quite up to the Phil Kollar original but still quite entertaining and they seem to get a lot of pretty good interviews.

Oh and http://videogameoutsiders.com/ is pretty good, but the hosts sometimes get their facts wrong with some games. however they're entertaining to listen to. They also just started a "casual aimed" warcraft podcast.

Destructoid's podcasts are a bit hit or miss (and often VERY NSFW) but Jim Sterling is always entertaining to listen to.

One Life Left is great if you're tired of all these other podcasts taking games so seriously.

Yeah it's ok - good banter with the hosts but they rarely actually get around to talking about games Also the little interlude segments they vary from tolerable to awful. But the weekly review done by one of the host's little niece is hilarious

A few others

The Brainy Gamer - Run by a college professor; he tends to talk more about social ideas around games than the games themselves. He recently changed format to include more hosts.

Sarcastic Gamer - Highly opinionated, mostly console focus. Falls into the "group of guys sitting around and talking about gaming" category.

Hardcore Christian Gamer - Also in the "group of guys sitting around and talking about gaming" category but with almost no profanity or innuendo (if that is a factor in your listening), and the "Christian" part of their name is actually kept to a minimum (if that is a factor too).

The only gaming podcast that I haven't seen mentioned yet that I enjoy is Evil Avatar Radio.

Besides gaming podcasts I personally would recommend:
This American Life - It's been mentioned on the GWJ podcast but really deserves a listen if you haven't tried it yet.
NPR Fresh Air - The people they interview are very diverse in backgrounds from celebrities to authors to heads of state. The interviews are very well done and fascinating for the most part.
The Moth - The stories people tell are quite interesting.
Tekzilla (video) - I don't always understand everything they talk about but it is quite good.

Seconded, I really like this podcast. It's pretty new and already very good.

I listened to a couple episodes of the Giant Bombcast and it really is good. I now have something to fill the void left by GFW Radio.

I don't understand how anybody listens to PCGamer's podcast. I've tried, two or three times now when people recommend it to me, and it just never keeps me interested at all. They're just so.. boring. And the audio quality is pathetic.

I keep listening to it, probably because I'm desperate for podcasts that acknowledge the existence of PC gaming. But yeah, the difference between it and GFW Radio is just like the difference between their magazines: Clinical and dull against thoughtful and creative. Whitta is still pretty entertaining sometimes, but it's all the more damning that the only person bringing any insightful commentary to the topics is the guy who doesn't write for the magazine anymore and actually has lost most of his interest in PC gaming.

I listened to about 20-25 episodes of Game Theory and Gary Whitta eventually grated on my nerves to the point where I just didn't care to listen anymore. He'd throw out the occasional insight but most of the time he seemed to vacillate between snide and disinterested.
IMO they could really use someone enthusiastic as a co-host or regular guest.

one of the reasons i like it... i'm tired of the over enthusiastic approach. If i wasn't excited about the info i wouldn't be checking out podcasts and for the most part they seem to keep things even.

What happened to Escape Radio?

Another vote for the Bombcast, seems to be all-around good.

They aren't really gamer podcasts but I'm enjoying most of the lineup on the TWiT network. The interplay seems good, the shows tend to be well produced, and it's nice to listen to things that aren't the same dozen news items talked about by three to five guys. The Law podcast of theirs is most certainly aimed at people more familiar with law than myself but it's still interesting.

I listened to this occasionally, but got very irritated with Whitta. The last straw was when AoC launched and they did a show about it, when the only thing they knew was that it was being billed as the next 'WoW killer.' They didn't even know if you played Conan or not. Surely a Google before the podcast would have shown some respect for the listener.

If we're not talking exclusively about gaming podcasts here, I'll lend my own listening habits:

The alt.NPR Press Start gaming podcast.
Drunken Gamers Radio
GeeksOn
HDTV and Home Theater Podcast (HTGuys)
The History of Rome podcast
Infendo Radio (Nintendo Podcast)
The Instance (I've been out of WoW for a long time, but I still listen)
Jawbone Radio
Massively Online Gamer (I agree with whoever said this one used to be better)
Nobody's Listening Podcast (goofy humorous stories on just about any topic)
NPR: Satire from the Unger Report
Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!
This American Life
This Week In Tech
Treks in Sci-Fi (Only the occasional episode, though. Some of these podcasts can be unbearably geeky)
Windows Weekly
WNYC's Radio Lab

I have a few still lingering on my list that I don't really catch anymore because of redundancy, or just a drop in quality or frequency. But if you want to check them out, they are:

Major Nelson (Never really liked his, they get awfully boring)
The 10th Wonder (Heroes podcast... Since it's been off the air for so long, I haven't had any reason to listen)
DS:Life (Overlaps with Infendo most times)
WiiSpot (Once again, overlap with Infendo)

Video podcasts I catch regularly:
Diggnation
Strong Bad Emails
Tekzilla
Tekzilla Daily
The Totally Rad Show

That's about it. That's actually pared down a good bit from what I used to listen to. You can only listen to so many podcasts in a work week. GFW will be sorely missed, though.

I am on vacation right now, sorta. Was missing the GFW radio on my iPod...
Now I know why Damn, that really sucks.
Good thing there is still this GWJ. Well, better get Jeff Green in here more
often!!!!
Some good suggestions in here.

The only one I listen to every week apart from GWJ is Game Theory. Yes, it's a bit dry and to the point, but that's exactly why I like it. Especially as a developer with limited time to scour the news sites, it provides an up to date look at what's happening in the industry. If they only could do something about the lacking audio quality.

Agreed. I'd actually be interested in his viewpoint, but I just couldn't stand listening.

I felt similarly about Luke Smith from old 1up Yours episodes. He's smart (and he actually did research!), but the view and personality was too abrasive.

(But for 1up, Garnett and John make everything OK.)

I like 1up yours. It has a good vibe to it with Shane and....oh wait I don't remember anyone else's names because Shane talks all the time.

One Life Left doesn't get enough credit. I don't think they're helped by having breaks between seasons.

Indeed. It is the only gaming podcast I listen to beside GWJCC.
Can anyone recommend other good British podcasts?

Just thought I'd necro this quickly to point out the new Rock Paper Shotgun Electronic Wireless Show.

I haven't had a chance to listen yet, and apparently the sound quality is pretty bad, but it sounds very entertaining (judging by the comments )

A 2-day dormancy is now a thread necro?
