GWJFFL 2008 - Week 2

Now with more "official" Power Rankings.

The power ranking of a team is based on the team's standing in three categories: W/L record, total points and "team breakdown." The team breakdown category calculates what your team record would be had it played all the other teams in your league each week of the season.

Haha, from first to worst. See what losing your first round pick for the season in the first quarter of the first game gets you!

Cross-poster! Must be the spamzorz!

I was happy with how my starters performed, but I'm starting to get worried about my bench depth.

Don't feel too bad, you should see what happened to the guy I was playing against in my other, pay league. I've been playing this game for a long time (antectdotal story approaching!) and people who have played against me and my teams have just done some simply inexplicable and silly things too often to be considered coincidences. See the following exhibits:

A) Going into a Monday night game, I was losing to the other player by 2 points and all of my guys had gone. She, on the other hand, had her QB yet to go and boasted verily about it on our boards and was excited about the fact she was finally going to get the better of my team. Her QB never got a throw off, instead, he was sacked, fumbled the ball and left the game injured. In our league, fumbles count three against you if they're lost, so she ended up losing by 1. Now, this would be strange enough except that in response to her taunting, I told her exactly what was going to happen. I called the shot. Of course, it was Drew Bledsoe, so its not as if I were going way out on a limb, but still.

B) In a playoff game a few years back, I was stuck with Doug Flutie, who was backup to Rob Johnson. Unfortunately, in our league, we couldn't trade players after week 10 and we couldn't pick up players off the waiver after week 10 unless they were put on IR and/or out for the season (being cut counts). My other QB (whom I can't remember) was injured and not playing, but because he wasn't put on IR, I couldn't trade, so I had to go with ol' Doug Flutie, who wasn't even starting and I was playing against the guy that had Rob Johnson, who was starting for him as well. It might be the first time ever in FFL that both the starting QB and the backup QB were played at the same time. The ending to that game, well, on a snowy December night in Buffalo, Johnson went down injured and Flutie wound up scoring more points than Johnson.

C) Other teams wind up having an inordinant amount of injuries to their rosters during the weeks I play them. I can't think of a better example of this than last week. The team I played squarely and soundly beat the hell out of me (Thank you Michael Turner); however, sitting on his roster is Tom Brady, Nate Burleson, and Marques Colston (now reported as having surgery on his thumb and out for awhile). Funny thing is, in our league, the losers of the game that week get first dibs on FA wire pickups starting Tuesday at 7:00 AM and the winners that week cannot pick up until Weds at 7:00 AM. Half the time, losing the first game is a blessing in disguise. The terrible thing is -- my opponent won, lost three starters, and wasn't able to pick anyone up until the 6 losers picked through the scrap heap.

These are just a few samplings of the overall silly things that tend to happen in this league. They've even named this phenomenon and have even built up a little mythos about it over the years. Pretty funny stuff.

It appears someone chopped the "0" off of my "10" rank.

That's OK, I repaired it and gave it to my brother.

Well, as much as I am tiffed at the suckage, I'm loving morris.

This issue came up in another fantasy league that I'm in and I just wanted to gauge the opinions of some more experienced fantasy footballers.

What is the stance on benching a player in a Monday night game because you know you've already won and don't want to risk the player going negative and losing the game?

This particular league has high risk, high reward defenses. The Titans this week got 37 points and the Rams got -24. Someone was up 3 points and just before the second MNF game benched the Raiders D and avoided their -16 points and a loss.

I personally think it's totally legitimate, but the person who lost as a result threw a fit and they're now thinking about making any future incidents of that nature be automatic forfeits.

Thoughts?

tough call. I'd say it's legit as long as the league allows mid weekend subs.

Thats perfectly fine.

I take it the person benched the defense and just left the spot vacated?

If the league wants to prevent this, then they need to institute a rule stating that every spot in a starting lineup must be filled by an active player. Some web-based leagues have features to disallow setting an "invalid" lineup, but it could easily be enforced manually by the commissioner, so long as it's a clearly stated and understood rule.

Short of doing that, or requiring rosters be locked in stone at the start of the week's first NFL game, there's no reason for the move to be frowned upon.

The "automatic forefit" threat is crap. Tell the commissioner to learn how to run a league and set correct rules or GTFO. It takes only some basic common sense rules to prevent this kind of maneuver.

In my opinion, a fantasy league that deals heavily in negative points is simply inviting trouble. But if that's the way the league wants to go, it's all the more reason for a competent commissioner to actually THINK through the league's rules.

The problem with that becomes what about using injured or Bye-week players to "fill" the spot. It's a fairly casual league among friends and the commish doesn't really want to penalize people who forget/aren't able to change out their inactive players (although, I'm all for it. If you can't find 5 minutes in front of a computer during the week, why are you taking up a slot?)

None of us are really fantasy football experts and it's a league among friends (and 100% free) so it's not a huge deal. I get the impression that the more it's been talked about, the less likely it is to pass. It was just the suggestion that the commissioner (who was also the person who sat his defense) and the affected person came up with.

I'm hoping it doesn't turn out that way.

I think you answered your own question at the end - if you can't expect a bare minimum of participation from the owners, then there's probably no point getting into the minutiae of minor rule loopholes.

Still, remember what we're talking about is intentional lineup tweaking before the Monday night game, not having stiffs in the lineup at the start of the week's games (as there's no obvious advantage of having a lineup with a stiff-filled spot before the games start). Bye week players and injured players (whose teams don't play on Monday night) should all be lineup-locked automatically, just as players who play Sunday games are. So there should be no danger of having them subbed in to "blank" out a lineup spot before the Monday night game. Having bye week players or injured players doesn't invalidate a lineup, only having an unfilled spot does.

So, requiring a valid starting lineup before the week's games start should be sufficient, as anyone who might consider using a stiff for one of their lineup spots would have to commit to doing so before they knew if it would help or hurt them. It might leave the door open for some rare cases (like subbing in an injured Monday night player to fill the spot of a healthy Monday night player), but since the main negative points that one would want to avoid come from team defense, there's no "injured player" possibility to exploit there anyway (and a team defense on bye week would be unselectable once the week's games started).

There was probably a much briefer and clearer way to express that idea, but I failed at finding it.

And that's totally fine, but there's something about that sentence and, "... but the person who lost as a result threw a fit" that doesn't quite seem to jive. A good rule of thumb is that, if anyone is going to take the league seriously, the commissioner must do so too. A rock solid set of rules lets casual and serious alike co-exist in the same league. Rule disputes are the #1 killer of fantasy fun.

Eddie Royal - $921 - Redhwk's ROFLcopters

Hey, if you need him, you've got to make sure you get him. No point holding onto that bidding money not to use it.

I'm feeling extremely good about my team, especially after the huge number of injuries last week. If anybody in GWJFFL2 is interested in a QB or WR I would entertain some trade ideas...

Mainly I'm looking for a decent RB, but I can be creative.

Oh really?
Come talk to the boogle, specifically on steam or PMs.

Boogle can't offer you the same kind of security that you'll find theorizing about kaos. We all know his picks all have bum knees anyway!

Now now, garcia has an ankle injury.

I heard on ESPN radio that it was a performance issue as much as anything else too...

No, no, that's what HE said. Oh! Oh!

In Fantasy Football, you know I'm in sorry shape when I start coming out in a two TE set. (GWJFFL)

If you haven't heard, the Ravens and Texas essentially got their bye week moved to tomorrow due to damage to Reliant Stadium. I was going to offer instant pickups to owners of the two teams since there's a big difference between say, a kicker getting hurt in practice (feasible) and suddenly becoming unavailable and a whole defense. As it turns out, though, everyone else who owns them already has them on the bench for this week anyway. As such, apparently I'm the only one (in GWJFFL2) who had to take advantage of the offer.

Also note that this affects the bye week for the Bengals.

The Baltimore Ravens-Houston Texans game was rescheduled to Nov. 9 after Reliant Stadium was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike, meaning both teams will not play in Week 2. The new date also affects the Cincinnati Bengals' schedule. Houston was originally scheduled to play the Bengals on Nov. 9. Now, those teams will play on Oct. 26 and Cincinnati will take its bye week on Nov. 9, when the Texans now play the Ravens.

I am affected Grump. I came in this thread to post about this. They announced today the Baltimore game is canceled, and Matt Stover, Ravens kicker, is my only kicker. Of course we are past the waiver wire this week. Can you trade out one of the other available kickers? If you need to put a waiver cost on it, $1, since if I had known before Wednesday I would have been able to do it then for a buck?

John Carney
Matt Prater
Rian Lindell
Robbie Gould

In that order, if you could.

Done.

Thanks Grump.

Geez. Live Scoring shows week 1 matchups (and NFL game scores). EA's site is {ableist slur}.

Carson Palmer's killing me. Time to play "Let's Make a Deal" - anybody with an extra starting QB that doesn't suck? Let's talk!

Bah, I accidentally accepted a trade with 9th Ward Boyz that I really didn't wanna do. Wife was talking with me and I hit the wrong button. My comment even said I wanna keep my guy. I dunno if you can reverse it or not Grump or if 9th would mind trading him back.

Damn you DJ Hackett! Delhomme threw to Muhammed all day long. I really debated starting Hackett or Pierre Thomas on the Saints. Hmm 3.2 points or 11.7, guess I made the wrong decision.

And with McFadden running all over the place it looks like Fargas is worth a lot less now.

Well, looks like I loose again barring Hines Ward literally raping the Browns...

Whoops. Forgot to take Willis McGahee and Andre Johnson out of my lineup.

It's a good thing I'm winning by about 40 anyway.

You weren't the only one -- Legion left his Texans in too.

I also screwed that up. Oh well, I couldn't have won anyway.
