All Pro Football 2k8 - Season 4 Draft - Tactics, Scheduling, Discussion, etc.

Just like last year I wanted to create a separate thread to conduct the draft and a separate draft to talk about the draft in hopes of helping the draft go smoothly.

This is that thread. To talk about the draft, scheduling, etc.

NOONE TAKE JACK TATUM.

That is all.

No really, it's nice to actually be entering the draft this year with a knowledge of how i'd like my team to look and a choice list for each position.

Here's a fun question for everyone to ponder though. Do you dare spending Silver or Higher on a D-Linemen? We all know O-Linemen are almost criminally useless in the grand scope of things, but i've seen some very nice looking D-Linemen wreak absolute havoc on opponents, slipping past generic linemen with nary a stutter step. I know, haivng gone up against Lee Roy Selmon and Reggie White recently, i'm deeply considering it.

Defensive Ends can be hit or miss. I had Too Tall last season and he wasn't nearly the beast I thought he would be. I will definitely consider picking up a gold or bronze tackle, though. They can disrupt an offense and wreak havoc at inopportune times for your opponent. I'm seriously considering that. Otherwise I might be on the "draft Bronze first" bandwagon this year. Especially with 12 players. Those cornerbacks will be gone quickly. So will the bargains like Okoye and others.

Two things:

1) I almost took Art Donovan as a gold DT last season. Sorta' glad I opted for Ronnie Lott. Some of those lineman can be quite good.

2) I took the opposite approach last year and drafted gold first. I won't do that again, but was pretty pleased with the results...oh, except when playing stupid Elliottx.

Just a thought, but don't you think Maxox should go last. Instead of being first he did say he will be away for 10 days. This way we can get through, with the first round. When he gets back, he can make his pick and we can continue from there.

I missed that. I hate to penalize the guy for being gone, but we do want to get this rolling. I also need Fyedaddy to pm me his email address.

If he does and a few more people reply I'd consider it. As always, I'm a facilitator.

On it's way!

Okay, the order of the draft has been shifted. This only buys us 1 round. So hopefully Maxox is back soon. Oldmanscene, you're on the clock. See the other thread for giving us your pick, letting us know that you've made a selection and who is next.

So what's the word on Maxox? He's almost up. I didn't hear about when he is supposed to be back.

You bastards, what's with the rush on CBs and safeties?

Have you seen how much folks in this league like to pass?

Two of my silver tier players from the last two seasons are already gone. This twelve player draft is going to be brutal.

Indeed. We might be picking kickers by round 10. Of course, I think it makes the draft more interesting. Get the rare commodities while you can.

Man, I had forgotten how damned many choices one has to make...how hard it is to put together a team that is strong across the board.

That's one of the many things I've grown to love about this game. You never can really put together a decent team (and I've only been playing offline in single player seasons) or at least I haven't been able to field a group that doesn't have at least one weakness. I'm also guilty of overlooking an aspect of the team here and there thinking that the generic players will step up... and they often don't. OL and K come to mind for me.

The draft really amps up that stress, as when players get taken, I find myself out of my comfort zone. Maynard was a great staple for me, and I really don't know how to replace that kind of a guy. But then I stat cranking out games offline, looking for other solutions. I loved all the offline and pick-up games during the draft last season. It was like getting to know the game again.

I found myself researching the playbook, and finding brand new schemes with different players.

Anyone remember when Maxox gets back? Gumbie contacted me a few days ago and asked into the league. So if Maxox turns up soon he obviously is still in, but if he disappears we do have someone on backup who wanted to play, but the league was full.

I finally found the post from the 3rd.

If you guys are ready to start the season then you can take my name out to get an even amount of teams. I will be out of town for about the next 10 days so even if there was a spot available I don't know how well drafting over my iPhone would work out.

Maybe I can get in on Season 5.

That would indicate tomorrow or so.

DSGamer, how come I can'tget into the spreadsheet from the last draft.

I'll fix that when I get home. PM me your email address again if you don't mind.

Sorry I haven't been checking up on this. I'm in the airport in SD. Should be ready to draft sometime after 9pm EST.

Cool, you may want to remember you have back to back picks. Have a safe trip home.

Pretty fun draft so far. Six players from my roster are now gone, although two are from my taking them myself. I knew Novacheck was gone when Ruthless took DSGamer's baby.

When I took a look at the draft site, I found Elliot on as he was getting ready to pick. It's very cool that we can chat on the site while we look at players and make out selections. Eventually Firesloth, Ertic and Oldmanscene showed up as well. There really is nothing like making your pick and hearing from a couple of guys that he was their next choice!

I'd say this has been an even better start to the draft than last year.

Yes. I expect it will get crazier the deeper we get into the draft. I do find it humorous that everyone takes great joy in picking my favorites.

Apparently I've done something right in the past that my players are highly sought-after. Now I'm scrambling to find guys who are "good enough". Novacek wouldn't have been my first choice for a tight end, obviously. And I thought about taking Ditka. But ultimately I wanted value at the TE position. As I said before, I fear we'll be drafting kickers and punters by the end of this thing.

Yeah, this draft should be good. I'm referencing everything I can. I'm going back to online.2ksports.com and picking over stats. Who was valuable, who wasn't. How many drops did X player have, how did the team perform, etc. As an example, one of my reasons for shying away from Ditka is because he was a large component of the offense he was in. Which either means he's really good or it means his stats are inflated because he was option A. Whereas if you looked at my team stats you'd see that I had a few receivers with significant stats. So Coates' stats weren't inflated by being the only option.

Anyway, should be interesting.

Hmmm...someday it would be interesting to have Ditka and Coates on one team and go from the 2 TE set most of the time....

Or Ditka and Novacek.

Yes, I just put fear out there. I'm in ur draftz, taking ur tight endz.

Sorry for not checking in sooner. I had my iPhone with me, but we were having a very relaxing mostly internet-free vacation.

I would have grabbed Marino with the first pick BTW.

An Internet-free vacation is great. So no need to apologize. We simply weren't sure how far out you were, so we decided to get things rolling. I wouldn't feel too bad about Marino. The one odd thing about APF 2k8 is that there are more than enough competent QBs. I waited until really late to draft my QB. I will, after seeing how that went, not leap on Cunningham as I might have been inclined to after firesloth beat me to him last year.

While Marino is awesome, I thin Montana is even better if your somewhat new to the game. Getting a QB that has the scramble ability will help you avoid those ducks that happen when you don't get your feet set. Montana is my personal favorite at QB.

But QB is weird position. Every QB has their own feel, and some guys can be great for you, but terrible for others.

It would have been fun to see Ruthless Marinoless, however.

Things I have been thinking about while waiting for Prederick to select the guy I was going to take.

So, I have been tweaking my team, with a combination of who I think I will be able to get, along with guys I hope I can get. What's interesting is that I have also created some alternative teams that I can play online with, so I don't give away my drafting strategies. I saw Ertic on today, but didn't hit him up for a game because I was messing with my real team, and he picks right next to me.

Has anybody figured out how to transfer playbooks? I hate having to recreate them every time I create a new team.

This last round has had me recreating my draft board with every pick. It's amazing how different this draft is from last season. Guys I think will drop are going, and guys I thought would be gone quick are hanging around. I'm sure I am not the only one shocked to see Jerry Rice and Earl Campbell on the board. Maybe last season we discovered enough bronze and silver guys that we feel like we can beg off the gold offensive weapons?

The more I play this game, the more I hope that when an NFL2K game comes out that it includes a legend mode like this. It is seriously the most fun I have had with a football game while not actually playing since FBPro98. It's like fantasy football, but turned up to eleven. I not only get to draft stars and play games with them, but I get to create gameplans based on my team's strengths and weaknesses.

After watching Elliotx's plan of drafting all bronze, then all silver, and then finishing off with golds for his last two picks last season, it is interesting to see him go after silvers early this year. I get the feeling he is really paying attention to value, but I can't keep up with his strategy. But I've got my eyes on you!

It's been a fun draft, but we really need more trash talk!

You should have hit me up Jay

I was just practicing with a team of possible draft picks when you saw me online. Its fun to check out the different players and see what you can accomplish with them. Every running back I have played with has a different feel to them, something that I never felt with Madden.

I'll second that! I've been getting more time in with my current offline season team of mostly 1980s 49ers. Now that I am learning how to use Roger Craig I'm actually starting to score points.
