Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

Pages

Ok so I'm a bit bored. Was listening to one of my favorite bands but told myself ''hey nobody knows them!''

So here I am with this thread. What's its purpose? Well certainly you know one band, one song that you find absolutely quintessential to their art. One song bound to make other people love the band (provided they love the genre).

So the idea here is not to submit ''Smell like teen spirit'' but rather something people may have never heard of but that is dear to you.

Here I go

Band: Autechre
song: Clipper
genre: Electronica

Linkydink: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLK70...

why: It is electronica at its purest. Old yet timeless. It is dreamy and introspective in a way. I can't quite explain the feeling this song spurs in me. Fans of electronica should like, others may find it a bit repetitive but may experience something unexpected.

Here's my suggestion i just found it on hypem a couple of days ago..

Band: Passenger
Song: Night Vision Banoculars
genre: UK Pop

Link: http://hypem.com/track/616324/IndieF...

Why: It's a pop Indie UK song that just seems to hit all the right beats without being too sickly sweet or annoying. One of those nice easy tracks you can sing along too, sometimes you just need something to put a little kick in your step.

Kaki King - Yellowcake
Genre: Mellow Guitary Pop

Why: This song marked a move from instrumental guitar music to more poppy songs for Kaki King, which could have been a bad thing if it weren't amazing.

(plus, this just popped up while I was watching that on YouTube and it seemed appropriate for this site: Kaki King on Guitar Hero)

Band: Pinback
Song: Fortress
Genre: Indie

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXH35...

Why: It was my anthem for this summer. Another nice, easy track with a great beat and melody. Makes me feel happy to be alive and somewhat nostalgic.

Hey I listened to that and I really like it. Totally my style. Very cheerful, will definitely look them up (as in buy an album if I manage to find one)
: )

** edit ** after listening to it half a dozen time I looked for other songs and I just ebayed it. thanks for the tip Mystreri0!

The Kooks
Paulo Nutini

two great bands with minimal US coverage.

I rather like this artist. I find it calming when I'm in the mood for some quiet music. :] I figured somebody might appreciate it

Have to listen to the Kooks best album (imo) Inside/Out

I ran into Imogen Heap early this year and have been very impressed. There's just something about the tunes in her music. Every time I hear one, every single time, it catches my ear. I've never been one to pay much attention to lyrics, so I have no idea of their relative quality, but DAMN I like most of the music. There's a couple I find pretty grating, but the vast majority are highly listenable.

She's done two albums that I know about, one as part of the duo Frou Frou, and one as herself. The track I probably like best is "The Walk" from the album "Speak for Yourself" under her own name. But that's an album that may be best listened to, start to finish, the old-fashioned way.

So, by your formatting:

Artist: Imogen Heap
Song: The Walk
Genre: I have no idea.

Artist: The Afghan Whigs
Song: Debonaire
Genre: Uhm... rock/soul/r&b, but not your typical r&b. It's like having the soul of Marvin Gaye mixed with early 90's alternative rock. For sure worth a listen

It's probably time for me to post about Bad Religion or Social Distortion again.

Or All.

Wow, that song is pure awesome. I'm definitely going to look up more of their music.

Band: The Dead Trees
Song: "Shelter" off the _Fort Music EP_
Link: MySpace Warning!
Genre: Indie Pop/Rock

Why: I get to hear a lot of new indie music. A lot. Too much. This EP immediately grabbed me from the first play, at a time when it was really easy for me to be jaded about a lot of the crap I have to listen to. The entire EP has a laid back, almost lackadaisical vibe. "Shelter" is the song that fakes you out of that, with a chorus that will triple-dog dare you not to sing along. It's a hell of a hook. Also, their drummer is fantastic.

Band: Plastic Operator
Song: Folder
Genre: Electro Pop

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX6rz...

"That's why I copy and paste
into your folder
folder with your name
it'd be more than I can take
if I just told you
told you what I feel
that's why I copy and paste"

Oh yeah, and this:

Band: Victims of Science
Song: The Device Has Been Modified
Genre: Electronica

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQUaE...

Not sure if this has been mentioned here before, but here's the video description:
"A song inspired by Portal using various sounds from GLaDOS."

Artist: Dengue Fever
Song: One Thousand Tears Of A Tarantula
Genre: World?

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcdgL...

Dengue Fever is a six-member band from Los Angeles who combine Cambodian pop music and lyrics with psychedelic rock. The lead singer Chhom Nimol was an accomplished nightclub singer born and raised in Cambodia. She mostly sings in her native Khmer language and has a beautiful voice.

I remember someone commenting on this track saying that they just melted into the song and I can't think of a better way to describe it.

Had to drop in a quick update that I think most might already know.

(slight nsfw lang.)

Artist: Matson Jones
Song: New York City F*ck Off
Genre: Indie rock

2 cellos, two female vocalists, one stand-up bass (with a bow), and an amazing drummer. Unlike every other cello-based rock band I've ever heard, they're not nerdy or gimmicky and they don't do covers of cheesy 80s rock songs.

I've known this ''band'' for quite some time. He's very good, VERY good but you gotta be in the mood for it since it's so mellow.

Fun facts:
-City and Colour is a name inspired by the singer's: Dallas Green. a city and a colour.
-The singer, Dallas Green, is a singer in the band Alexisonfire. You can look it up. Needless to say, it rocks the house a whole lot more but I guess that's how the guy was known and how he got his start.

Thanks for sharing. I love that band, absolutely love it. first listen I was a bit turned off because I couldn't understand but the music and her beautiful voice kept me listening, then I listened to a few more tracks on youtube. Their sound is really unique, definitely contemplating getting their cd now

Artist : Half Man Half Biscuit
Song : Bad Losers on Yahoo Chess
Genre : Scouse surrealism meets ramshackle indie rock

How can you not love a song that references Zulu chief Cetawayo and Ernest Shackleton ?

Anything by the band Morphine.

Artist: Chris Norman Ensemble
Song: The Darling (sample m3u from cdbaby)
Genre: Modern Scottish folk (not sure what else to call it)

I've heard these guys perform a few times and Chris Norman is probably one of the most incredible musicians I've ever had the pleasure to see. The guy is unbelievable and his ensemble's jazzy take on Scottish folk-style music is really amazing.

The entire Caledonian Flute album is amazing but it's hard to find good samples of it online. The cdbaby sample I linked cuts off just as the song really starts to kick in but you'll get a feel for the style. I really suggest people check out that album, I think you may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

I used this in a video. I just noticed I didn't credit them. So thanks I added it in comments =/

Anyway my pick is Sade, but I'm sure everybody knows it already wink

A garage band from Birmingham called the White Oaks. They have a few downloadable songs on their myspace.

My wife is a big fan of "Hey Julie" where I like "How can you sleep" more.
I'm bias I grew up with the lead singer, and his older brother is one of my best friends.

I also like the lead singer's solo work (Noel) here.
Especially the song "The death of Lili White"

Direct from the glorious past for the candidates, Wired, "Field Day For The Sundays". Kuh-lassic! (Although I always expect to hear "Three Girl Rhumba" start up right after, the space is really short on the album.)

And yes, it's a great exemplar of late 70's UK punk from one of the best bands at the time. 0-)

BTW, Dengue Fever is awesome, I've heard them interviewed on PRI - I think it was on Fresh Air, it'll be in their archives.

Edit - Here it is.

Great find, man.

Thanks!

Public radio rocks.

Band: Fleet Foxes

Song: White Winter Hymnal
They have some other good stuff but I don't think the youtube clips do them justice

Genre: Indie Folk
