GWJFFL 2008 - Preseason

Now that the draft time and teams for GWJFFL are locked in, it's time for a nice, clean thread to discuss preseason business.

Note: Additional information will be added to this post as necessary.

The GWJFFL is the official Fantasy Football League of Gamers With Jobs. It consists of two 12-team conferences - GWJFFL and GWJFFL2. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis, with priority given to returning owners. Teams who sign up after the first 24 positions are filled will be added to an alternate list to be contacted should a slot become available. The waiting list carries over from year to year so signing up as an alternate for this season reserves your position until you forfeit it.

The GWJFFL follows, as closely as possible, the rules of the World Championship of On-Line Fantasy Football. Details can be found starting on page 6 (Section II) of the Official WCOFF rules.

Significant highlights include:

Roster Requirements: Maximum of 20 players.

Lineups Requirements:
Starting lineups will consist of
1 QB
2 RB
3 WR
1 TE
1 Flex player (a RB or WR, or TE)
1 PK
1 Team Defense/Special team

Point Calculations: Team scoring will be carried out to the hundredth (e.g. a team may score
94.75 points).

Free Agent Acquisitions/Blind Bidding: The free agent system will be a “blind bidding” process. Each team will start with $1,000 free agent “dollars” for the season, and will be permitted to bid for free agents on a weekly basis. No team will be informed of any other team’s free agent bids until after the winning bids have been awarded. A team owner will no longer be able to bid on free agents once their season long waiver wire cap of $1,000 has been reached.

All of the substitutions made the divisions for GWJFFL2 just too far out of whack; so I could either rename them or realign them. I chose the latter.

Three days 'til draft.

I better get some research in.

FYI for anyone setting up their autodraft list, it appears that WCOFF scoring rules have not been set yet so don't believe it when you sort by 'your scoring system'. Here are the WCOFF scoring rules:

a. Passing:
Yards passing divided by 20 (e.g. 215 passing yards = 10.75 fantasy points).
4 points for every passing TD.
Minus one point (-1) for every interception thrown.
2 points for every 2-point conversion.

b. Rushing:
Yards rushing divided by 10 (e.g. 89 rushing yards = 8.9 fantasy points).
6 points for every rushing TD.
2 points for every 2-point conversion.

c. Receiving:
Yards receiving divided by 10 (e.g. 112 receiving yards = 11.2 fantasy points)
6 points for every receiving TD.
1 point for every catch.
2 points for every 2-point conversion.

d. All Other TDs:
6 points for any TD scored by recovered or returned fumbles, laterals, or any other means by
which a skill position player (QB, RB, WR, TE, or K) is awarded an individual TD, except
kickoff and punt returns. No rushing or receiving yardage is awarded for a TD returned on a
fumble.

Placekicking:

1 point for every Extra Point
3 points for every FG of 1 – 30 yards plus .1 point for every yard thereafter.
Example: a 43-yard FG would be worth 4.3 points

f. Team Scoring (Defense/Special Teams):
1 point for every sack
2 points for every team takeaway (interception or fumble recovery)**
6 points for every TD (via interception return, fumble return, punt or kickoff return, blocked FG
return, missed FG return, blocked punt return)*
2 points for every safety
5 points for every shutout ***
2 points for allowing between 1- 5 points ***
1 point for allowing between 6 – 10 points ***

* TDs scored on “fake” FGs or “fake” punts do NOT count as Defense/Special Teams scoring.
TDs scored by the offensive team after a blocked FG or blocked punt do NOT count as a
Defense/Special teams score. TDs scored on a double-turnover only count for the individual
player who scored the TD, not for the team.

** A double turnover is considered points for the recovering team’s defense and ST. Thus, an
example, team A’s offense fumbles and team B’s defense recovers, but then fumbles the ball
back to team A’s offense. In that scenario team A’s defense and special teams (along with team
B’s defense and ST) are both awarded a fumble recovery.

*** Any and all points scored against a team are considered points scored against the special
teams and defense. Thus, as an example, a turnover by the offense that is returned for a TD is
considered as points scored against the special teams and defense.

Um... huh. Is anyone else having major, savage problems with EA's website? It doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason as to whether it remembers I'm logged in or not, and almost all the links (my league, my team, login, etc.) take me back to the headlines page. This is occuring in Firefox and IE. Perhaps I should try it on a different computer, or something.

I can't get it to work at all in FF3. (I click on the 'login' button, and it just goes back to the EA FF front-page.)

I use the FF plug-in IE tab to get it to work, but I'll probably use IE6 for the draft.

Our League Settings:

- Passing TD Pts: 3
- Passing Two-point Conversion Pts: 1
- Passing Yards Pts: Award 1 points for every 25 PassYds

Official WCOFF rules:

- Passing TD Pts: 4
- Passing Two-point Conversion Pts: 2
- Passing Yards Pts: Award 1 points for every 20 PassYds

Q: Are there no negative points for throwing interceptions?

Q: Are there no extra points for long field goals - >30yds?

Q: Are there no points for DEF shutouts?

(I don't have a problem either way. I just want to know for sure for my pre-draft research.)

Also...

Q: Is the draft done in a 'snake' pattern? 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12, 12,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, 1,2,3,etc. ?
Ex. I would draft 3rd, 22nd, 27th, etc.

I haven't had any significant problems, sorry. Based on an earlier message, if you're having login troubles, try deleting your cookies. Also, certain functionality, like the draft randomizer, only worked in IE. It was IE7 even.

Yes, the snake is draft. As for all your other questions, we follow WCOFF rules. If you see a discrepancy (after tonight) please bring it to my attention.

I've had some problems with it, especially in FF, but I've used them every year for a work league, so I'm used to it. Basically I spend 2 days fumbling around while I get it all worked out and bookmarked to the right page and saved. Then for the rest of the year I'm good as long as I use the bookmark and don't get logged out.

Edit: I like how the GWJFFL2 league divisions are now North, East, West, and Texas.

I was having those problems on Firefox, but when I used Flock it worked fine.

Firefox 3 is just sh*t right now. They screwed the pooch on that one.

Also, I'd like to voice my disapproval for EA.com's choice to make team names no longer than 25 letters. I can't be "Logan's Hannah Montana Appreciation Station." =(

I know, the Oklahoma hate is terrible. You can't put me with Californians, I WILL NOT PICK THEIR PEACHES.

GWJFFL and GWJFFL2 scoring and roster should be set up now.

I couldn't get as granular with the FG scoring because I was limited to 10 bonus fields but came up with a compromise with which I'm happy enough.

If you see any discrepancies between WCOFF and the league, please let me know. Thanks.

This means that MaverickDago and Pigpen are about 4 hours away from being replaced by Hopped Up On Koolaid and TempestBlayze.

Pigpen is in. Only MaverickDago remains at risk. 25 minutes. One final email reminder sent from the EA site... as well as a PM.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong here, but cannot seem to claim my team on EA's site. I read there are Firefox problems (is this 2002?) so I am doing this through IE. I went through the link in the league email, then click the big SIGN UP! button, I get the page with four options, I picked "I am new to Fantasy but have an EA.com account" which is true, and it just kicks me back to the SIGN UP! page. I have also tried to just click the Register or Login buttons at the top of the page and they just put me in the same loop.

Any ideas?

I wish I was more help but haven't had any troubles through which I could have garnered useful knowledge. Have you tried clearing your cookies before visiting the site?

OK, I think I got it. I had to use IE and delete all temporary files, including cookies. Awesome...

I have the _exact_ same thing happen to me in FF3. (It could be due to the plug-ins we're using.)

I use the IE Tab plugin to get the site to work.

I recommend using a real version of IE for the draft, JIC. (I get an error on page load with IETab in FF; but it doesn't prevent me from using any of the features of the site - so far.)

I can't get it to load on ie7, but had no problems on ff2

Draft FAQ (w/ highlights)

Q. Where's the link to launch the live draft Flash applet?
A. The link to launch the live draft applet appears one hour before your scheduled start time on your league page.

Q. Can I draft my team without using the live draft Flash applet?
A. Yes, in the Draft Room there is a link "Make a Pick" which allows you to select a player by position when it's your turn or add players to your draft Queue.

Q. What is a Draft Queue?
A. A Draft Queue is a list of players that will be selected if it's your pick and your time expires.

Q. How do I select a player?
A. There are two ways to select a player:

1. Select the player you want to draft using the Find Player option. You can search by position and by team. Highlight that player and click on the red "Pick" button.

2. Use the Drafting Queue. This allows the owner to place several players in a list to choose from on the left. Just use the Find Player option and click on "Add to queue". There is no limit to the amount of players you can place in your draft queue. If the player or defense is selected by another owner before it's your turn to pick, he will be automatically removed from your drafting queue. If your time runs out, the 1st player listed in your queue will be selected. To select a player to draft, highlight the player in the draft queue and click on the red "Pick" button.

Q. What is "auto-pick?"
A. The auto-pick feature allows you to put your team on "auto-pilot." When auto-pick is selected and your turn comes to draft, the computer will immediately select a player for you. The computer will first look to see if you have any players placed in your draft queue. If you do, the first player listed will be selected. If no players appear in the queue, the computer will look at the pre-draft rankings of players you submitted before the draft, if any.

If you did not pre-rank players, you will be given a set of default rankings based on last season's point totals.

Q. How do I turn on/off auto-pick?
A. To turn off auto-pick or turn on auto-pick, just checkmark the box marked "Auto" that is next to the red "Pick" button. If you turn on auto-pick during your turn, it may not immediately pick for you this turn. If auto-pick is left on though, the next time it becomes your turn auto-pick will be active.

Q. What if I have nobody in my draft queue and my time expires?
A. Your team's pre draft rankings in the Draft Prep page are used in this case, with the first player available being added to your team.

Q. I can't find a player in the list I want to draft, what do I do?
A. Only players listed are available to draft. However, be aware that all players are ranked by 2007 stats by default, so rookies and those players who did not play last year, will be listed at the bottom unless you have modified their single-list rankings.

Q. I'm having problems with the draft applet, what do I do?
A. If you're having problems with the Flash Live Draft applet, you can use the HTML version. You can also try closing down your browsers, and re-loading the Flash applet.

Even if you don't pre-rank your whole player list, use the draft queue to get a couple options for your next pick queued up so if you temporarily lose connection or your computer locks up, you'll still have a shot at getting someone you want instead of Brooks Bollinger.

Also note that if your timer expires twice, you'll be automatically put into auto-pick mode. If/when you come back, you should be able to turn it back off.
