Too Human Catch-All

Yeah, that was pretty funny and deserves some props. Maybe not praise, but certainly props.

Yea I'm playing fast and loose too. I wanted to grab it day one but though I should hold off a sec and see what the forums thought.

With the reviews and flak this game is getting, the price is going to drop quickly no matter how good it actually is. I'd recommend anyone who doesn't NEED to have it RTFN do what I intend to, which is wait for the post-holiday slump and pick it up cheap.

I'm sort of wondering if I'm playing the same game some of these reviewers played.

I'm with Certis and dhaelis. I'm having a great time with it. A friend and I spent like 5 hours in co-op last night and only made it part of the way through the third world, but we were constantly trading items back and forth and helping each other take out the larger enemies. It very much reminds me of Diablo, just from a different perspective.

I'm really glad I picked it up despite the general negativity surrounding it.

Yup, I too played through the first level and reached the point where you get your choice of secondary skill trees, and as I expected my impressions are about identical to those I had of the demo. It's not terribly polished, but once you get the groove of how the game is played it is terribly fun.

I had intended to finish the whole game on single player first, but I'm thinking I might have try some co-op tonight. Especially after leveling up a bit more than was allowed in the demo I'm really starting to feel how much fun could be had working together with other players. It really is a shame that they couldn't make 4 player happen in the end though.

I was able to put in about three and a half hours in last night and really like it so far. The demo is representative of the 1st level but in the second, things begin opening up some. It's still basically linear but the types of enemies becomes more diverse and the way they group them makes some of the encounters a lot more challenging. I stopped at an encounter with 2 trolls, 6 dark elves and a bunch of goblins; some of the dark elves and one of the trolls were laying down cover fire, goblins and dark elves were swarming me and the other troll was ground-pounding.

The Bioengineer (which I'm playing) seems to come into his own somewhere between levels 8 and 10. This class underwhelmed me in the demo but after getting some more points into his spider skill and battlecry, he's gained enough survivability to be viable. Without his self healing, the first boss battle would have been a lot more frustrating.

I haven't tried co-op yet but if anyone's up for some, hit me up. My gamertag's in my sig and I can heal ya!

Man, that Giant Bomb video was a riot. I swallowed some coffee wrong I was laughing so hard.

Awesome, that's pretty much where I'm at right now and it makes me look forward to playing some tonight.

Also, though I'm not much of an online gamer, a few of the comments posted by you guys are giving me an itch to try this online.

Glad to read some sane impressions of this game, rather than the Dyack bashing which seems to be so popular. I really liked the demo, so if it's more of the same, then you can count me in.

I'm having fun, easily worth my $60.

Remember the bridge from the demo? Sinatar and I revisited it at level 13, and the game turned it into a maze! Complete with top-down camera, multiple entrances, and a "prize" in the middle!

I can post longer impressions later, but the first thing I'm noticing is that Levels 1-10 (the entire scope of the demo, or Act 1 of the full game) is the kiddy pool. You don't need to pay attention to stay alive. Later levels ramp things up considerably, encounters will kick your ass again and again. In one encounter we ran into an ice hammer troll, a purple troll that slows you when he hits you, 2 cannon trolls who were spamming fire grenades everywhere, a squad of missile goblins, fire goblins, goblin chiefs and their droogies. I dropped my spider to shoot down the missles, activated my battle cry to knock back the goblin rush while Sinatar tried his best to kill the trolls.

In another moment we had waves of fire trolls rush us; when a fire troll dies, he explodes, so you can imagine the fireworks when they started going down.

The bosses so far are pretty boring, just meat shields that you pump a lot of damage into. The rest of the game is more fun.

Monsters change to match your level each time you play, they spawn in different locations and in different combinations. The variety reminds me of Diablo far more than say, Halo 3.

Co-op is hectic and very fun. You aren't missing anything if you play through solo first, it will give you time to get a feel for your character and controls. Too Human plays at the pace and frenzy of an action game, so you don't always have time to think through strategies. If you need to change gear in the middle of co-op combat, you will be cursing the damn menu. It's annoying in single player and downright dangerous in co-op.

Oh we've had plenty of Dyack debate too. I just finished the latest DGR and the impression seemed to be that none of you guys were going to do Too Human. Are you thinking of doing a review now? I would be interested to hear DGR's opinions on it. If neither of the other two are interested in it, you can definitely find no shortage of people here to co-op with.

Welcome to the forums Hilden!

Well, after hearing you guys talk it up, along with some other board posts of people liking it, I think I'm going to pick it up.

I loved the demo, it was just all those nasty review scores that made me think I'd missed something.

And glad to be here! Right up my alley.

Protip: Bezerker + Commando = Epic Goddamn Fail

Defender + Bioengineer on the other hand = God mode

That really shouldn't surprise anyone. Tank + Healer = the only duo that ever matters.

I dropped you a friend request, Hilden. I can hold your hand and ease you into the obtuse world of Too Human.

OKTOBERFEEEEST!

Wow, you guys weren't kidding about them ramping up the difficulty in the second level.

On another note, does everyone get a full red (maybe orange? looked red though) set and a red weapon out of the second level? I blew it on the first area where you had to break down a wall then climb to the top of a big cylinder, but I made it all the way up the second one and was rewarded with a full set of (seemingly) red armor blueprints that were a couple levels above me. Then I stepped outside and opened the next obelisk and got a red sword blueprint. I suspect that the sword might have been a lucky random drop, but do they really hand out full sets of the highest rarity gear like that? And if so, what the hell did I miss in the first cylinder climb?

I think you may have just been lucky.

Also, I went ahead and picked it up and played through 2.5 levels on single player and so far I've played through the co-op for a few levels. I have been playing with a good friend and he decided to switch classes when I was about level 22. We hopped in to the same game and he was having a little bit of trouble at first, but by the end of the second level he was already level 18. So it's nice that you can play co-op with friends regardless of the level gap, though I'm not sure if it is ever so much that it can't be overcome.

Overall though it is a lot of fun. The story seems a little jilted even though I really like the concept. I'm interested in seeing what the monsters change in future levels because right now I'm about 30 and some of the waves of enemies are crazy.

Wait, big cylinder climb? Crap I must've missed that too. Are you talking about the secret passageway you open up by force pushing the big boulder in cyberspace?

Nah, there's two (maybe more?) places that have crumbly walls that you just hit with your sword and they open up battle arenas. At the very start of the level there is a similar wall that you break down to get at a well. If I remember correctly the first arena (the one I failed) was near the place where you first fight a spider guy, and the second was just before the long hallway that led to the event where you break generators to lower a platform. Or was it during that event? I can't quite recall.

Anyway, after doing some reading elsewhere I think they were all orange. On my TV they looked like a very red shade of orange, so I wasn't sure. I guess I may need to calibrate my TV.

I picked it up with a friend yesterday and played about 3.5 hours solo last night. If any of you with the game are not on my friends list feel free to add me or prepare to be added. I'm really looking forward to playing coop. I've been waiting for a game to scratch that hack'n'slash loot fest itch that I've had growing for a while and this game has been doing it nicely.

Oh and on a side note, if you happen to have someone near you who wants to buy the game and there is a Toys R Us in the area. That is where you buy the game this week. They are running a buy one get one 1/2 off special on all 360 games making it a great deal. What I didn't know until I got there was that the game was already on sale for $50 instead of $60. These two deals combined and my friend and I only paid $40 for our copies of the game. $40 is the perfect price, go get it while you can.

Yeah, if you're not in the 40's odds are you aren't seeing any actual red items. It's all blue, purple, and orange until way way later in the game.

To date I've found exactly one red item, and it's a sword that does over 2200(!) damage. Unfortunately I found it with a Defender, and his damage is higher with a hammer I have because of some bonuses to hammer damage I have on armor and a skill or two. Speaking of that Defender, I hit 50 with him this morning.

Started a Berserker, which seems like a hell of a lot of fun so far. Only up to level 11 with him at the moment, but based on initial impressions I think I like the playstyle with the Berserker a bit better than I did the Defender.

Oh, another thing I noticed about the game that I really appreciate is that there are no stuttering frame rates like mass effect and the load times themselves at the beginning of levels is quite short as well. Maybe this should be expected at this point, but I appreciate it none the less.

Yeah, it's pretty much a total blindside how tough things get after the first level.

As for the armor set, if you find all the secret areas in Level 1, you'll have a full set of matching armor blueprints, and I'd assume that you could probably get a full set if you uncovered everything in the other levels as well.

I noticed that the enemies are a little more intelligent and have some more abilities than in the demo; fights I skied through without getting scratched in the demo, I actually had to pay attention to in the full game. Goblins jump up in the air and act noticeably more aggressive, and do some other stuff too.

Polarity enemies (the glowing ones,) are often immune to some types of damage, and I STRONGLY recommend that Commandos keep 1 of each ranged weapon damage-type (pulse, slug, lasers,) at all times when possible, and switch out liberally. Some bosses are almost immune to some types of ranged damage, while other types will drop them like a stone. If you hit a polarity enemy they blow up or hit you with whatever debuff/etc they do, so double-tap to launch them into midair then back away before they hit the ground and blow up. Fierce Attacks (both sticks shoved in same direction, different attack depending on weapon,) work well, as do simple stick-and-roll tactics.

Rolling can be done with the B button, and you're totally immune a la Ninja Gaiden, while rolling. You can roll through area attacks that you can't jump over. I know at several different people who played for 3-5 hours and never realized they could roll..!

If you're fighting a Leader Goblin (the burly, shielded ones,) double-tap to launch them into the air then juggle them with guns or melee. Once their shields drop, they're a 1 or 2 shot kill. You can launch them off of ledges too, if you're in a hurry.

I've heard a few people complaining about the bosses being unkillable in melee, but I personally was almost unable to damage GRNDL-1 using my (10/10 upgraded Champion skill) plasma pistols at all, and mostly used midair melee attacks and rolls to kill him off. Berserkers can be rough on the bosses and the crazier fights farther in, so warm up your rolling fingers and practise hitting a big enemy multiple times in midair and then rolling away.

Experimenting with different types of weapons, guns, etc makes the combat much more in-depth than most have mentioned - for instance, quickly alternating your pistols instead of constantly firing both, will conserve tons of ammo and easily knock missiles out of the sky, as well as helping to avoid the "sticky targetting" issues some have mentioned. Using (or not using) the R Stick to aim your guns also makes a big difference, as does how you use the stick, tapping, circling, or holding steady. Overall, I am loving this game, and I truly hope to see its sequels come out, with a reinstated 4-player co-op (or possibly patching it back in to this version?) When the sequels come out, I will be standing in line for them.

Well - I picked it up. I'm still ont he fence with this one, but I am playing it. I'd love to do some COOP. Send me a friend invite. Also, we should create a Too Human list for COOP like we do other games. I know there's not a ton of us with 2Human right now but I think these lists are going to become more and more necessary for COOP games (so we should make em). I'd do it but I don't know the process.

If you are dying a lot, stop and figure out what you're doing wrong. Every seemingly impossible situation I've run into has a weakness, and my weak little Commando rarely dies. That's the key to leveling up so fast, don't die. Soloing is actually the best way to learn.

Jesus, the zombies in the final act are boring. Hell of a bad way to end the game.

Nah, I got my first red at level 29. It's lasted me quit a long time, too!

I did the same with a Defender, he's 14 I think. I think you're having the standard reaction everyone has to DPS vs tank classes in any MMO. I love the Defender because whenever I see 3 trolls standing together, I just run right in. I don't have to peel one off from the pack or do anything passive aggressive like shoot out their legs.

awesome stuff

I agree with everything you've said. I'd also add that you should not choose your armor based solely on the armor rating. Specialize on 1 or 2 bonus types (say, canon damage and reload speed) and focus on that. Choose lower level armor if it has what you need. Trust me on this.

Oh and if you see an item bonus that you think is useless, you're wrong

Slytin and I just finished a 6 hour co-op session. This game is a blast! Definitely satisfied with my purchase.

Picked it up as well. If you see me online playing assume co-op is a go!

I was playing through the single player campaign last night and the second boss requires a lot a shooting with guns to defeat him. I however have a berzerker and as such it takes me forever to do damage with ranged weapons. So is this lack of options for the more melee-centric berzerker bad gameplay design? I'm no expert, but when I'm having so much fun with the rest of the game and then I get severely frustrated and annoyed with this one part I'd say 'yes'.
