Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2

The intro movie is extended a little bit. Check it out.

Absolutely sweet ass!

Great to hear that the Tyranids will be in the game and I have faith that Relic will do their unique race mechanics justice.

I'm wondering if there are any more races left to be revealed? It would be strange if Chaos doesn't get included in this go around.

I thought it was only going to be 4 inital races? is it more than that now? or has something else changed?

There's always the inevitable expansion pack(s).

Also, the Tyranids look awesome.

I was not sure if that was confirmed or not.

Was there ever a confirmation that there would be only 4 races? (Honestly, I'm not sure)

It just seems strange to have the Eldar in over Chaos, but that is just my opinion.

I've just seen it in action, and the Tyranids were "the last of the four races we have in DoW2." More impressions later on.

Sweeeeet.

Yeah, I can understand your confusion, but you're thinking from a rational, informed standpoint. It feels to me like Relic has decided that Chaos & Imperial Marines were too similar in the original and so they would go with four races with radically different play styles. That should provide appeal for those who have never played the game before and help the designers figure out what their engine's capable of supporting.

I, for one, can't wait to build up a warband with personalities and customizable wargear. 'Ere we go, 'ere we go, 'ere we go!

My guess for first expansion - Imperial Guard and Chaos.

Thanks for the confirmation Spunior.

Good point.

I certainly hope we will see the Imperial Guard in expansion packs. I miss my Baneblades already. *Sniff*

Gamespot video of Tyranid gameplay.

I loev me some Imperial Guard so I hope they'll be added in the first expansion.

And I know this is heresy but... I vastly prefer the look of Starcraft marines to Warhammer marines. I think it's the metal underwear that Warhammer marines love so much.

Burn the heretic!

I agree fully I prefer the look of the starcraft marines as well.

StarCraft marines seem designed more to make the power armor look like a useful suit of pressurized space armor, where the Warhammer ones are pretty overtly medieval knights in outer space. I like the Warhammer ones because the whole techno-religious crusader angle is interesting to me, but I also like StarCraft's more sci-fi take on the idea.

Some background on the armor of the might Space Marines:

I really enjoy the religious aspect of the Warhammer Marines. It gives them a sense of purpose and identity that I feel the StarCraft Marines are lacking.

That looks incredible.

So umm, who here thinks that the game is complete enough after watching that trailer and thinks that they should start public beta now!?

/raise hand

About the trailer though, at frame 1:38 do you guys recognize what type of units are the "human unit in capes"?

Superman?

...I got it wrong, didn't I?...

Well, technically all space marines are supposed to be super humans, so those caped guys may indeed be superman!

Maybe spacemarine scouts?

There's a small piece about the tyranid up on Gamespy. The main new information:

Gamespy wrote:

The faction is built around a mechanic called "synapse," which represents the operation of the Tyranid hive-mind. Not all Tyranid units you can encounter will be connected via synapse, but you can tell ones that are by the green aura surrounding them. Units under synapse will perform more effectively; in the case of AI-controlled enemies, they'll generally be smarter and more responsive to threats. The downside, though, is that if the unit serving as the main node for a group is killed, the synapse units will perform less effectively than normal. As to how this will play out in multiplayer, that's anyone's guess.

Looks like a good way of getting the 'hive mind' concept into an RTS format.

Just from the sound of it, Tyranid seems like a race made for swarming, but I thought Orks already occupy that niche.

Are you talking about the trailer with the Space Marines battling the Eldar?

Thirteenth wrote:

Good point. I didn't play much with the Ork in the last games, but that was definitely their 'role'. The marines were a combined arms group, the IG was a turtle army, the Eldar was hit and run, etc. I suppose we would have to see. At the end of the expansions the differences between all the armies were becoming subtle. Balance issues will be a nightmare.

Warhammer Space Marines and Starcraft space marines are different enough to not be a linear one better than the other.

Warhammer:
Elite Forces
Religious Zealots
Hand-picked from the best
Knights in space

Starcraft:
Standard unit
Basically athiest
Brain-wiped criminals
Awesome sci-fi power armor

I think it comes out even.

Oh, I've *got* to get me one of these....

Apparently THQ are customising a British army FV432 tank in order to turn it into a real life Rhino transport to promote Dawn of War 2 (filled with gaming rigs rather than religious zealots though).

Fixed. Warhammer wins by a nose.

Its almost enough to make me consider a trip up to Birmingham on the 14th. Almost.

Maybe they'll be touring the UK after!
